The Hydra Filesystem: A Distrbuted Storage Famework, Benjamin Gonzalez, George K. Thiruvathukal Jan 2006

The Hydra Filesystem: A Distrbuted Storage Famework, Benjamin Gonzalez, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Hydra File System (HFS) is an experimental framework for constructing parallel and distributed filesystems. While parallel and distributed applications requiring scalable and flexible access to storage and retrieval are becoming more commonplace, parallel and distributed filesystems remain difficult to deploy easily and configure for different needs. HFS aims to be different by being true to the tradition of high-performance computing while employing modern design patterns to allow various policies to be configured on a per instance basis (e.g. storage, communication, security, and indexing schemes). We describe a working prototype (available for public download) that has been implemented in the Python …

Supremacy And Diplomacy: The International Law Of The U.S. Supreme Court, Harlan G. Cohen

Faculty Scholarship

In 2003-2004, a Presidential campaign year dominated by debates about international affairs and international law, the U.S. Supreme Court took an unusual number of cases of international import. The Court considered the Alien Tort Claims Act and the future of human rights suits in U.S. courts, the applicability of the Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act to claims involving Nazi-stolen artwork, the applicability of American antitrust law to foreign anticompetitive activity, and the legality of the Guantanamo detentions. A great deal of ink has been spilled analyzing the individual impacts of each of these cases. What has been less considered is how …

Seasonality And Adult Habitat Use By Four Diabrotica Species At Prairie–Corn Interfaces, Laura A. Campbell, Lance J. Meinke Jan 2006

Seasonality And Adult Habitat Use By Four Diabrotica Species At Prairie–Corn Interfaces, Laura A. Campbell, Lance J. Meinke

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Although Diabrotica pest species have been well studied in field corn, Zea mays L., relatively little is known about adult habitat use by pest and nonpest species at prairie-corn interfaces. Therefore, the objective of this work was to compare seasonal patterns of beetles of four Diabrotica species and their use of remnant prairie and adjacent field corn habitats in southeastern Nebraska. The study was conducted at five sites in 2001 and continued at three sites in 2002. The Diabrotica species included D. barberi Smith and Lawrence, D. cristata (Harris), D. virgifera virgifera LeConte, and D. undecimpunctata howardi Barber. Cucurbitacin vial …

Absence Of Genetic Divergence Between Western Corn Rootworms (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Resistant And Susceptible To Control By Crop Rotation, Nicholas Miller, K. S. Kim, S. T. Ratcliffe, A. Estoup, T. Guillemaud Jan 2006

Absence Of Genetic Divergence Between Western Corn Rootworms (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Resistant And Susceptible To Control By Crop Rotation, Nicholas Miller, K. S. Kim, S. T. Ratcliffe, A. Estoup, T. Guillemaud

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a major pest of corn, Zea mays L., in North America that has recently invaded Europe. A loss of ovipositional fidelity to cornfields has allowed the species to circumvent crop rotation as a means of control in part of its range in the United States. Analyses of variation at eight microsatellite loci provided no evidence for general genetic differentiation between samples of western corn rootworm collected in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., fields and those collected in cornfields both inside and outside the rotation-resistance problem area. This result suggests …

Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Larval Feeding Behavior On Transgenic Maize (Mon 863) And Its Isoline, Pete L. Clark, Ty T. Vaughn, Lance J. Meinke, Jaime Molina-Ochoa, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Diabrotica species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) larval behavior studies have posed a challenge to researchers because of the subterranean life cycle of this pest. To fully understand how the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, injures the maize, Zea mays L., root system, its behavior must be studied. For example, larvae that can detect an area of the root that has a lower amount of toxin, whether from an insecticide or a transgenic maize plant, have an increased chance of survival. This study assessed D. v. virgifera larval feeding behavior on rootworm-susceptible maize and maize containing a biotechnology-derived trait (MON863) with …

Mineralogical Characterization Of Protolith And Fault Rocks From The Safod Main Hole, John G. Solum, Stephen H. Hickman, David A. Lockner, Diane E. Moore, Ben A. Van Der Pluijm, Anja M. Schleicher, James P. Evans

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Washed cuttings provide a continuous record of the rocks encountered during drilling of the main hole of the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD). Both protolith and fault rocks exhibit a wide variety of mineral assemblages that reflect variations in some combination of lithology, P-T conditions, deformation mechanisms, and fluid composition and abundance. Regions of distinct neomineralization bounded by faults may record alteration associated with fluid reservoirs confined by faults. In addition, both smectites occurring as mixed-layer phases and serpentine minerals are found in association with active strands of the San Andreas Fault that were intersected during drilling, although …

Focusing on the family is an integral component of nursing practice. The guideline development panel acknowledges that most nurses already have relevant knowledge and skills to care for families. However, this guideline was developed to promote and facilitate continuing education, reflection and reaffirmation of the importance of caring for families. The intent of the guideline is to further build upon, improve and deepen nurses' knowledge and skills towards meeting the needs of families.

Structural Evolution And Vorticity Of Flow During Extrusion And Exhumation Of The Greater Himalayan Slab, Mount Everest Massif, Tibet/Nepal: Implications For Orogen-Scale Flow Partitioning, M. J. Jessup, R. D. Law, M. P. Searle, Mary S. Hubbard Jan 2006

Structural Evolution And Vorticity Of Flow During Extrusion And Exhumation Of The Greater Himalayan Slab, Mount Everest Massif, Tibet/Nepal: Implications For Orogen-Scale Flow Partitioning, M. J. Jessup, R. D. Law, M. P. Searle, Mary S. Hubbard

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The Greater Himalayan Slab (GHS) is composed of a north-dipping anatectic core, bounded above by the South Tibetan detachment system (STDS_ and below by the Main Central thrust zone (MCTZ). Assuming simultaneous movement on the MCTZ and STDS, the GHS can be modelled as a southward-extruding wedge or channel. New insights into extrusion-related flow with the GHS emerge from detailed kinematic and vorticity analyses in the Everest region. At the highest structural levels, mean kinematic vorticity number (Wm) estimates of 0.74-0.91 (c. 45-28% pure shear) were obtained from sheared Tethyan limestone and marble from the Yellow Band on Mount Everest. …

Caregivers In The Courtroom: The Growing Trend Of Family Responsibilities Discrimination, Joan C. Williams, Stephanie Bornstein

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Articles describes how attorneys bringing FRD claims face a threshold conceptual issue:How should plaintiffs frame FRD cases under existing discrimination law when neither "mother" nor "parent" is a protected classification? The solve this threshold issue, this Article suggests that FRD cases need not be shoehorned into protections for pregnancy nor require individual accommodations to be litigable. FRD cases can be litigated as straightforward gender discrimination cases under Title VII or under a variety of existing laws.

Multi-Dimensional Seismic Imaging Using The Inverse Scattering Series, Fang Liu, Arthur B. Weglein, Kristopher A. Innanen, Bogdan Nita

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The inverse scattering series (ISS) is a comprehensive multidimensional theory for processing and inverting seismic reflection data, that may be task-separated such that meaningful sub-problems of the seismic inverse problem may be accomplished individually, each without an accurate velocity model. We describe a task-separated subseries of the ISS geared towards accurate location in depth of reflectors, in particular the mechanisms of the series that act in multiple dimensions. We show that some 2D ISS imaging terms have analogs in previously developed 1D ISS imaging theory (e.g., Weglein et al., 2002; Shaw, 2005) and others do not; the former are used …

Does The Public Understand Intellectual Property Law? Do Lawyers?, David Vaver

All Papers

I was given a speaker's dream brief: to talk about whatever I wanted so long as it had something to do with the theme of the conference - intellectual property ("IP"). A few suggestions were made in a nice, non-authoritarian way. These could, of course, have been treated the way IP lawyers usually proceed, i.e., by entirely ignoring them. That is called purposive construction, and Canadian and British courts do it all the time. So a British court has read a patent claim to say that "vertical" can also mean "leaning", a decision that comforted builders everywhere. Not to be …

Publishers And Copyright: Rights Without Duties?, David Vaver

All Papers

What does the public want of publishers? As book buyers, they want ready access to cheap and varied books in their language of choice. They don't want to be told a book is out of stock or in some language they can't read, and that they have to trudge round to some public library or antiquarian bookstore, or do their own surreptitious translation. As writers and users, they want fair access to the world's literature to have and to hold, to enjoy, to make fun of if they want, to build on it, and also to benefit and let others …

Baseline Mapping Of Phragmites Australis (Common Reed) In Three Coastal Mississippi Estuarine Basins, Mark S. Peterson, Melissa L. Partyka

Faculty Publications

Over the last two decades, the northern Gulf of Mexico has undergone tremendous growth and development that has resulted in extensive and ongoing habitat modification. We had the opportunity to survey the main channels and bayous of three coastal estuarine basins for the presence and coverage of the invasive Phragmites australis (common reed). The occurrence and area of P. australis was highly variable among the lower Pascagoula River, Back Bay of Biloxi, and St. Louis Bay basins, with the largest amount of coverage (0.489 km(2)) found within the lower Pascagoula River basin and the smallest in Back Bay of Biloxi …
