Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The water-based communities in Amphawa District have evolved in their settlements over a long period of time. They all have specific and unique characteristics in terms of natural and cultural heritages. In the past, the communities have been affected by various transformations and changes not only in the natural environment but also through the direct and indirect developments which have been undertaken in the Mae Klong River basin. Despite these changes, however, the traditional water-based communities have been able to adjust themselves for survival up to the present day. This study aims to describe certain issues which affect the survival …

From Orthodoxy To Heresy: A Theological Analysis Of Sonnets Xiv And Xviii, Timothy J. Burbery Jan 2006

From Orthodoxy To Heresy: A Theological Analysis Of Sonnets Xiv And Xviii, Timothy J. Burbery

English Faculty Research

The commentary on Milton's eighteenth sonnet ("On the Late Massacre' in Piedmont") is rich and extensive. Kester Svendsen's often cited 1945 essay, the first close reading of the poem; ushered in many other interpretations of its biblical imagery, as well as speech-act analyses, reader- response discussions, and at least one Foucaldian study. Yet even though a religious conflict inspired the sonnet, and although numerous interpreters have paid close attention to the work's biblical texture, no sustained theological account of the poem has been offered. The present essay seeks to fill that gap by examining the work in light of two …

Enzyme Engineering Of Aminotransferases For Improved Activity And Thermostability, Abraham Rogelio Mártin García Jan 2006

Enzyme Engineering Of Aminotransferases For Improved Activity And Thermostability, Abraham Rogelio Mártin García

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The production by biosynthesis of optically active amino acids and amines satisfies the pharmaceutical industry in its demand for chiral building blocks for the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals. Among several enzymatic methods that allow the synthesis of optically active aminoacids and amines, the use of minotransferase is a promising one due to its broad substrate specificity and no requirement for external cofactor regeneration. The synthesis of chiral compounds by aminotransferases can be done either by asymmetric synthesis starting from keto acids or ketones, and by kinetic resolution starting from racemic aminoacids or amines.

The asymmetric synthesis of substituted (S)-aminotetralin, an …

Shear Band Evolution In Zr/Hf-Based Bulk Metallic Glasses Under Static And Dynamic Indentations, Hongwen Zhang Jan 2006

Shear Band Evolution In Zr/Hf-Based Bulk Metallic Glasses Under Static And Dynamic Indentations, Hongwen Zhang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibit superior mechanical properties as compared with other conventional materials and have been proposed for numerous engineering and technological applications. Zr/Hf-based BMGs or tungsten reinforced BMG composites are considered as a potential replacement for depleted uranium armor-piercing projectiles because of their ability to form localized shear bands during impact, which has been known to be the dominant plastic deformation mechanism in BMGs. However, in conventional tensile, compressive and bending tests, limited ductility has been observed because of fracture initiation immediately following the shear band formation. To fully investigate shear band characteristics, indentation tests that can confine …

Study Of And Design Procedure For Dual Circularly Polarized Waveguide Slot Arrays, Lee M. Paulsen Jan 2006

Study Of And Design Procedure For Dual Circularly Polarized Waveguide Slot Arrays, Lee M. Paulsen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

For the past sixty years, waveguide slot radiator arrays have played a critical role in microwave radar and communication systems. They feature a well-characterized antenna element capable of direct integration into a low-loss feed structure with highly developed and inexpensive manufacturing processes. Waveguide slot radiators comprise some of the highest performance—in terms of side-lobe-level, efficiency, etc. — antenna arrays ever constructed.

A wealth of information is available in the open literature regarding design procedures for linearly polarized waveguide slots. By contrast, despite their presence in some of the earliest published reports, little has been presented to date on array designs …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

The structural and magnetic properties of arc-melted and homogenized (1300 °C, 1 h) alloys of Gd5Ge1.9Si2X0.1 (X = Cu, Co, Ga, Mn, Al, Bi, or Sn) were investigated by powder x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and magnetometry. The addition of Cu, Ga, Mn, and Al completely eliminated the large hysteresis losses present in the undoped Gd5Ge2Si2 alloy between 270 and 330 K, broadened the magnetic entropy change ΔSm peak, and shifted its peak value from 275 to 305 K similar to that …

A detailed discussion of the experimental methods and the subsequent data reduction is included. The results are presented and the importance of these data for spectrographic emission models of Hall …

Conceptual Issues Of Global Counterfeiting On Products And Services, D. Bosworth, Deli Yang Jan 2006

Conceptual Issues Of Global Counterfeiting On Products And Services, D. Bosworth, Deli Yang

School of Business Faculty Research

Counterfeiting is a global problem of enormous magnitude. Despite its obvious importance, relatively little attention has been paid to the management of counterfeiting. This paper considers the difficulties of measuring counterfeiting and provides evidence of the magnitude of the problem worldwide. The focus is on counterfeiting of privately produced goods and services, rather than the issue of the counterfeiting of currency per se, which is a somewhat different though related issue. A conceptual framework of the private and social costs and benefits of anti-counterfeiting measures is also provided. The framework highlights a number of key driving forces of counterfeiting, including …

The Reputational Penalty For Aggressive Accounting: Earnings Restatements And Management Turnover, Hemang Desai, Chris E. Hogan, Michael S. Wilkins Jan 2006

The Reputational Penalty For Aggressive Accounting: Earnings Restatements And Management Turnover, Hemang Desai, Chris E. Hogan, Michael S. Wilkins

School of Business Faculty Research

In this paper we investigate the reputational penalties to managers of firms announcing earnings restatements. More specifically, we examine management turnover and the subsequent re-hiring of displaced managers at firms announcing earnings restatements during 1997 or 1998. In contrast to prior research (Beneish 1999 and Agrawal, Jaffe and Karpoff, 1999), which does not find increased turnover following GAAP violations or revelation of corporate fraud, we find that 60% of restating firms experience a turnover in at least one top manager within 24 months of the restatement compared to only 35% among age-, size- and industry-matched firms. Moreover, 85% of the …
