Stereotypical Images Of Chinese Characters In Hollywood Films, 1910--2005, Yu Chen Jan 2006

Stereotypical Images Of Chinese Characters In Hollywood Films, 1910--2005, Yu Chen

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine 20 major Hollywood films, two per decade between 1910 and 2005, to determine how Chinese characters have been portrayed and how their portrayals have changed over time. The researcher examined the nature and purpose of stereotypes as well as interracial interactions and relationships depicted between Chinese and Caucasian characters to provide insights into the balance of power depicted in the films.

Previous studies on Chinese portrayals in Hollywood films were badly out of date, since films produced after 1970 have not been included in the analyses. The present study filled the gap …

Developing A Curriculum To Train The Lay Leaders In Ghana, Isaac Bimpeh Boateng Jan 2006

Developing A Curriculum To Train The Lay Leaders In Ghana, Isaac Bimpeh Boateng

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ghana is growing at a very fast rate. The rate of growth far exceeds the rate at which ministers are trained. There were over 300,000 baptized members at the end of 2005 and fewer than 200 pastors. The pastor to laity ratio is therefore very high. Some of the elders who are assisting the pastors do not have the needed skills to work effectively as leaders. As a result of this there is an increase in apostasies especially among new converts.

Method

In an attempt to train the laity in Ghana to assist the …

A Biblically Based Strategy For Disciple-Making In The Seventh-Day Adventist Churches Of Malawi, Wenson Lyson Masoka Jan 2006

A Biblically Based Strategy For Disciple-Making In The Seventh-Day Adventist Churches Of Malawi, Wenson Lyson Masoka

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The current rapid growth of the church in Malawi lacks an on-going strategy to foster the membership increase and its spirituality. The failure to systematically train the laity as disciple makers has resulted in their under utilization. By default, the church has become clergy-dependent and the majority of the members warm the pews as mere spectators. Meanwhile, their conversions seem to be equated with disciple-making. There is need for a paradigm shift which will produce active lay persons who can adequately rise to the challenge of the Gospel Commission, making disciples of all nations. Although this research has a …

A Strategy To Reach Animistic People In Madagascar, Jacques Ratsimbason Jan 2006

A Strategy To Reach Animistic People In Madagascar, Jacques Ratsimbason

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The majority of the Malagasy people who live in Madagascar are unreached with the gospel message. A preliminary investigation of current literature indicated that 50 percent of the Malagasy are followers of traditional religions. This present study was to develop a strategy to reach the animistic people with the gospel message.

Method

This study presents Malagasy people, their social characteristics, population, worldviews, and lifestyles. A study;and evaluation of Malagasy beliefs and practices were developed using Hiebert's model of critical contextualization.

Results

The study reveals that the Seventh-day Adventist Church must update its evangelistic methods to reach animistic people and …

A Strategy For Strengthening Romanian Seventh-Day Adventist Families Dealing With Couple Separation Due To Economic Reasons, Mihail Baciu Jan 2006

A Strategy For Strengthening Romanian Seventh-Day Adventist Families Dealing With Couple Separation Due To Economic Reasons, Mihail Baciu

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Financial challenges in Romania have prompted many Seventh-day Adventist people to leave their spouses and country to seek employment abroad. The impact of this phenomenon upon families has been significant. This situation occurred primarily between 1991 and 2000. Before 1990, generally speaking, the number of Seventh-day Adventist family separations or divorces was very low (around 30-40 families) in Romania. After 1991, this number increased dramatically to estimated 10-12,000 families. Temporary separation of spouses for economic reasons does not necessarily lead to a divorce. However, due to the complex implications of temporary separation on families, children and faith communities, this …

Greed And Pride In International Bankruptcy: The Problems Of And Proposed Solutions To "Local Interests", John A. E. Pottow Jan 2006

Greed And Pride In International Bankruptcy: The Problems Of And Proposed Solutions To "Local Interests", John A. E. Pottow

Michigan Law Review

The collapses of Yukos, Parmalat, and other international juggernauts have focused scholarly attention on the failure of multinational enterprises. Even what one might consider "American" companies, such as Chicagobased United Airlines, have made clear in their restructuring plans that their operations have profound effects on the dozens of nations around the globe where they transact business. Government and quasi-government reform efforts to regulate these cross-border insolvencies have abounded, including among others, the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency. UNCITRAL is also building on World Bank and INSOL efforts at promulgating a Legislative Guide for "best practices" bankruptcy codes.

Scholars vary …

Evolving Objective Standards: A Developmental Approach To Constitutional Review Of Morals Legislation, Christian J. Grostic Jan 2006

Evolving Objective Standards: A Developmental Approach To Constitutional Review Of Morals Legislation, Christian J. Grostic

Michigan Law Review

This Note argues that the Supreme Court's recent jurisprudence regarding morals legislation mirrors the findings of empirical research on moral and psychological development. Specifically, the Supreme Court upholds morals legislation only if it is justified by stage five reasoning. Part I examines significant Supreme Court cases related to morals legislation over the last 50 years and argues that the Supreme Court has consistently upheld morals legislation that is justified by stage five reasoning, while consistently striking down as unconstitutional morals legislation that is not. Part II argues that a developmental approach to constitutional review of morals legislation, while consistent with …

One-Sided Contracts In Competitive Consumer Markets, Richard A. Posner, Lucian Arye Bebchuk Jan 2006

One-Sided Contracts In Competitive Consumer Markets, Richard A. Posner, Lucian Arye Bebchuk

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper shows that "one-sided" terms in standard contracts, which deny consumers a contractual benefit that seems efficient on average, may arise in competitive markets without informational problems (other than those of courts). A one-sided term might be an efficient response to situations in which courts cannot perfectly observe all the contingencies needed for an accurate implementation of a "balanced" contractual term when firms are more concerned about their reputation, and thus less inclined to behave opportunistically, than consumers are. We develop this explanation, discuss its positive and normative implications, and compare them to those of information-based explanations for one-sided …

Problems With Minimalism, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2006

Problems With Minimalism, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Much of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's work on the Supreme Court embodies a commitment to judicial minimalism, understood as a preference for narrow rulings, closely attuned to particular facts. This preference reflects a belief that at least in adjudication, standards ought to be preferred to rules. In many contexts, however, that belief is hard to justify, simply because it imposes severe decision-making burdens on others and may well create more, rather than fewer, errors. For this reason, a general preference for minimalism is no more defensible than a general preference for rules. The choice between narrow and wide rulings cannot …

Transparency In The Budget Process, Elizabeth Garrett, Adrian Vermeule Jan 2006

Transparency In The Budget Process, Elizabeth Garrett, Adrian Vermeule

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Budget procedures are often adopted or changed to improve “transparency” in budgeting. This phrase can refer to two different, although related, stages of the budget process. First, transparency may refer to the outputs of budgeting; here the ideal is that the tradeoffs inherent in a budget should be made clear, salient and understandable to policy makers and the public. Second, transparency may refer to the inputs of budgeting; here the ideal is to ensure that the decision-making process is itself conducted in public. This paper focuses on the second concept of budget transparency—the degree to which important budgeting decisions are …

A Qualitative Study Of Mcdowell County West Virginia: Exploring Technological Determinism, Technophobia, And Fear As Deterrents Of The Utilization Of Computer Technology In Rural Communities., Christopher Ryan Walls

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Computers play an important role in our everyday lives. Rural areas are being left behind the digital divide due to the lack of money, infrastructure, and educational resources. The current study will explore the role of fear among individuals who do not utilize computer technology. It will try to better understand the psyche of individuals in rural communities and their opinions about computers. This research will also try to provide solutions on how to narrow the digital divide in rural areas such as McDowell County, West Virginia. This research included an in-depth interview along with a survey regarding computer use …

Identifying Spatial Clusters Within United States Organic Agriculture., Daniel C. Eades Jan 2006

Identifying Spatial Clusters Within United States Organic Agriculture., Daniel C. Eades

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although the organic market has experienced rapid growth in recent decades, growth in production has not been distributed evenly across the country, instead concentrating in certain regions. Employing measures of spatial concentration and association, we identify those counties in which organic production is clustered or represents a proportion of the agricultural economy greater than would be expected by national trends. Results show that spatial clustering of organic agriculture does exist. Large location quotients for organic production were most often found for the western U.S., the Great Plains states, and New England. Clusters measured by the local Moran’s I statistic followed …

Ipcc Model Simulations Of Future Climate Change In Southeast Asia, Chakkrit Reamruk Jan 2006

Ipcc Model Simulations Of Future Climate Change In Southeast Asia, Chakkrit Reamruk

Master's Theses

The coupled atmosphere-ocean model simulations from the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (2007) are used to investigate climate change over Southeast Asia (SEA) in the 2U‘ century. Simulations of the 20th century temperature and precipitation are compared to observations and guide the selection of the most appropriate models for the study of fiiture climate change in SEA. These models are run for both low (Bl), and high (A2) emission scenarios. By 2100, model projections show SEA temperature rising by 1.0-2.1°C for the Bl scenario and 2.1-3.8°C for the A2 scenario. Under A2 and Bl scenarios, the average annual precipitation increases by …

The Comparative Effects Of 0.12% Chlorhexidine And Herbal Oral Rinse On Dental Plaque-Induced Gingivitis, Elizabeth N. Southern, Gayle B. Mccombs, S. L. Tolle, Ken Marinak Jan 2006

The Comparative Effects Of 0.12% Chlorhexidine And Herbal Oral Rinse On Dental Plaque-Induced Gingivitis, Elizabeth N. Southern, Gayle B. Mccombs, S. L. Tolle, Ken Marinak

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of two oral rinses-one 0.12% chlorhexidine rinse (CHX) and one herbal rinse (HBR)-on gingival health status over time.

METHODS: Sixty-three participants were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: CHX, HBR, or placebo. For three months, participants rinsed twice daily (morning and evening) with (1/2) ounce of allocated rinse after brushing and flossing. Individuals were given the same type of soft bristle toothbrush and whitening toothpaste. No attempt was made to modify participants' routine oral care, except they were advised to refrain from use of any other oral …

Burkean Minimalism, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2006

Burkean Minimalism, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Burkean minimalism has long played an important role in constitutional law. Like other judicial minimalists, Burkeans believe in rulings that are at once narrow and theoretically unambitious; what Burkeans add is an insistence on respect for traditional practices and an intense distrust of those who would renovate social practices by reference to moral or political reasoning of their own. An understanding of the uses and limits of Burkean minimalism helps to illuminate a number of current debates, including those involving substantive due process, the Establishment Clause, and the power of the President to protect national security. Burkean minimalists oppose, and …

Sulcular Sulfide Monitoring: An Indicator Of Early Dental Plaque-Induced Gingival Disease, Aleksandra Pavolotskaya, Gayle Mccombs, Michele Darby, Kenneth Marinak, Naik N. Dayanand

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) and gingival health status and to determine if volatile sulfur compounds can detect early dental plaque-induced gingival disease. Methods. A split-mouth design with randomly selected quadrants of the mandibular arch enabled 39 participants to serve as their own controls. At baseline and at three subsequent appointments (days 7, 14, and 21) gingival inflammation (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), and sulfide levels (SUL) were measured using the Gingival Index and the Diamond Probe/Perio 2000 System. For three weeks, participants refrained from brushing and flossing one …

Oral Cancer Prevalence In Virginia, Karin C. Loftin, Michele Darby, Stacey Plichta, Sophie Thompson, Shreeram Kumar, Louis Abbey Jan 2006

Oral Cancer Prevalence In Virginia, Karin C. Loftin, Michele Darby, Stacey Plichta, Sophie Thompson, Shreeram Kumar, Louis Abbey

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

Purpose. Oral and pharyngeal cancer affects 30,000 Americans a year and kills one fourth of those diagnosed. The primary risk factors for oral cancer are past or present cigarette and tobacco usage, and alcohol consumption in conjunction with tobacco use. Even though the prevalence of oral cancer is relatively low in the younger age groups, this group is most likely to benefit from intervention programs designed to change risky behavior such as smoking, and to prevent oral cancer in the later years. The goal of the study was to identify high-risk target areas for an oral cancer prevention program in …
