Antimicrobial Effects Of Liquid Anesthetic Isoflurane On Candida Albicans, Viachaslau M. Barodka, Edward Acheampong, Garry Powell, Ludmilla Lobach, David A. Logan, Zahida Parveen, Valerie Armstead, Muhammad Mukhtar

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that can grow in yeast morphology or hyphal form depending on the surrounding environment. This ubiquitous fungus is present in skin and mucus membranes as a potential pathogen that under opportunistic conditions causes a series of systemic and superficial infections known as candidiasis, moniliasis or simply candidiasis. There has been a steady increase in the prevalence of candidiasis that is expressed in more virulent forms of infection. Although candidiasis is commonly manifested as mucocutaneous disease, life-threatening systemic invasion by this fungus can occur in every part of the body. The severity of candidal infections …

A Family’S Deadly Sin: Fatal Child Abuse In Florida An Anthropological Perspective On Child Deaths Due To Abuse And Neglect, Christa A. Williams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines child death data in an effort to assist in prevention and intervention, as well as, to provide quantitative and qualitative analysis to improve and enhance policy development around child deaths due to abuse and neglect in Florida. The data reviewed consisted of aggregate data for all incidents of child deaths (N = 266) in Florida where the primary caregiver was the alleged perpetrator of a child fatality for children under age 18. All data examined were recorded and stored in the Department of Children and Families’ Child Safety Assessment database between 1998 and 2000.

The Unilateral Creation Of International Law During The "War On Terror": Murder By An Unprivileged Belligerent Is Not A War Crime, Noman A. Goheer Nov 2006

The Unilateral Creation Of International Law During The "War On Terror": Murder By An Unprivileged Belligerent Is Not A War Crime, Noman A. Goheer

ExpressO

Murder by an unprivileged belligerent is a war crime created by the United States Department of Defense for singular use in military commissions. The charge is unprecedented under the law of war, law of armed combat, international humanitarian law, and customary international law. War crimes are defined through these particular instruments, and the international system does not allow for the unilateral creation of war crimes by a single nation.

Free Expression And A Satisfied Society: What Child Pornography Laws Really Protect, James E. Bristol Nov 2006

Free Expression And A Satisfied Society: What Child Pornography Laws Really Protect, James E. Bristol

ExpressO

Motion pictures portray childhood sexuality by pushing the elusive and controversial line between free expression and exploitation. While child pornography laws protect real children as subjects in overtly sexually exploitative motion pictures (kiddy porn), in practice, due to issues of interpretation, application, and accessibility, free expression in mainstream motion pictures is supported more fully than child protection. Recent Supreme and Circuit Court decisions allow the motion picture industry to more freely portray childhood sexuality without fear of expression becoming illegal. Thus, as our social history illustrates, the societal awareness of the sexuality of children is all the more satisfied. Legally …

Vera Brittain: The Work Of Memorial In An Age Of War, Christine M. Doran Nov 2006

Vera Brittain: The Work Of Memorial In An Age Of War, Christine M. Doran

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

In her trajectory from sheltered, unmarried middle-class woman to mature rational adult capable of fending for herself on the streets of London, Vera Brittain marks the power of work, even with its inherent restrictions, to negotiate and survive trauma. Work, the speaking out in public about the issues—the sexual, physical, emotional, and intellectual jeopardy of women sparked by keeping them ignorant, liable to break under the shocks they experienced, was the only way to break the cycle and integrate the trauma into a survivable narrative.

Work, Welfare, And Women's Role As Mothers, Pamela Fiber, Jackie Filla Nov 2006

Work, Welfare, And Women's Role As Mothers, Pamela Fiber, Jackie Filla

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

The demand for legal equality for women in the twentieth century has been fraught with challenges and dilemmas. While advocates for equality insisted laws preventing women from full contractual rights be eliminated and that women be compensated equally for their labor, the political and social tides swept poor women responsible for their children into the mix. In addition to the dramatic influence on social policy, the demands for market equality have been met with slow movement. Women continue to act as caretakers of the home and children, and earn significantly less than men. Attempts to change this through law are …

The "Fair" Sex: Working Women At London's Fairs, 1698-1732, Anne Wohlcke Nov 2006

The "Fair" Sex: Working Women At London's Fairs, 1698-1732, Anne Wohlcke

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

We must consider historical occasions of women’s own response to misogynist representations of their work or regulatory efforts to curtail their labor. As notions of women’s proper urban work space shifted in the early-eighteenth century, female fair workers responded to, ignored, or reconfigured themselves in the face of efforts to regulate their available occupations. Without institutionalized or uniform understandings of all women’s appropriate work, and in the absence of economic conditions which would allow working women to vacate the streets of London, women remained active participants in the city’s work force.

A Review Of Procedural And Jurisdictional Challenges In Enforcing International Human Rights Law Under The African Charter Regime, Morris K. Mbondenyi, Nixon Wanyama Sifuna Nov 2006

A Review Of Procedural And Jurisdictional Challenges In Enforcing International Human Rights Law Under The African Charter Regime, Morris K. Mbondenyi, Nixon Wanyama Sifuna

ExpressO

The interpretation and enforcement of international human rights law has tremendously evolved since the adoption of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The Charter introduced procedural and jurisdictional paradigms that have moulded this branch of law to resonate Africa’s context and values, by for instance, evolving concepts and approaches distinct from those of the other regions. While striving to achieve this, the Charter has also had to grapple with an avalanche of procedural and jurisdictional challenges. This Article highlights these challenges and proposes ways in which they can be surmounted. It proceeds on the premise that contrary to …
