Robust Control Techniques Enabling Duty Cycle Experiments Utilizing A 6-Dof Crewstation Motion Base, A Full Scale Combat Hybrid Electric Power System, And Long Distance Internet Communications, Marc Compere, Jarrett Goodell, Miguel Simon, Wilford Smith, Mark Brudnak

Publications

The RemoteLink effort supports the U.S. Army's objective for developing and fielding next generation hybrid-electric combat vehicles. It is a distributed soldierin- the-Ioop and hardware-in-the-Ioop environment with a 6-DOF motion base for operator realism, a full-scale combat hybrid electric power system, and an operational context provided by OneSAF. The driver/gunner crewstations rest on one of two 6-DOF motion bases at the U.S. Army TARDEC Simulation Laboratory (TSL). The hybrid power system is located 2,450 miles away at the TARDEC Power and Energy System Integration Laboratory (P&E SIL). The primary technical challenge in the RemoteLink is to operate both laboratories together …

Co Detection And Millimeter Continuum Emission From Low Surface Brightness Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Nov 2006

Co Detection And Millimeter Continuum Emission From Low Surface Brightness Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

We present BIMA and IRAM CO (1-0) observations of seven low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, including three large spiral galaxies with faint disks but prominent bulges and four relatively small LSB galaxies with irregular disks. The giant LSB galaxies are UGC 5709, UGC 6614, and F568-6 (Malin 2). The smaller LSB galaxies are NGC 5585, UGC 4115, UGC 5209, and F583-1. The galaxies were selected based on their relatively high metallicity and apparent signs of star formation in their disks. The BIMA maps suggested the presence of molecular gas in two of the giant LSB galaxies: F568-6 and UGC 6614. …

The Reason Behind The Rules: The Archaeological Resources Protection Act Of 1979 And Scientific Study, Ryan M. Seidemann Nov 2006

The Reason Behind The Rules: The Archaeological Resources Protection Act Of 1979 And Scientific Study, Ryan M. Seidemann

ExpressO

What are the federal agencies’ powers under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA) to limit or control the scientific study of archaeological materials? The research for this article has led to an ultimate conclusion that ARPA does not provide federal agencies with the power to limit the scope of scientific study on covered archaeological materials. No provision of ARPA provides federal agencies with the authority to act as scientific dictators with ARPA-covered archaeological materials.

Privatization And The Law And Economics Of Political Advocacy, Alexander Volokh Nov 2006

Privatization And The Law And Economics Of Political Advocacy, Alexander Volokh

ExpressO

A common argument against privatization is that private providers, motivated by self-interest, will advocate changes in substantive policy. In this Article, I evaluate this argument, using, as a case study, the argument against prison privatization based on the possibility that the private prison industry will distort the criminal law by advocating incarceration.

This “political influence” argument applies at least as well to public provision: Government agencies, too, lobby for changes in substantive law. In the prison industry, for instance, it is unclear whether private firms advocate incarceration to any significant extent, but public guard unions are known to do so …
