Burgeoning interest in the history of translation is evident in the recent publication of such works as the ongoing 5-volume Oxford History of Literary Translation into English (Oxford University Press, 2005- ) and the Encyclopedia of Literary Translation Into English (Fitzroy Dearborn, 2000). The fact that massive corpora of English texts are now available as EEBO and ECCO opens up possibilities to take this research to a new level and move it beyond the realm of literary translation where the majority of existing scholarship has focused so far. Given a p-order A over a universe of strings (i.e., a transitive, reflexive, antisymmetric relation such that if (x, y) ∈ A then |x| is polynomially bounded by |y|), an interval size function of A returns, for each string x in the universe, the number of strings in the interval between strings b(x) and t(x) (with respect to A), where b(x) and t(x) are functions that are polynomial-time computable in the length of x. By choosing sets of interval size functions based on feasibility requirements for their underlying p-orders, we obtain new characterizations of complexity classes. We prove that the …

This question of merger is one of the most perplexing that courts face in the criminal sentencing process. This article not only explores that question but proposes specific new methods a court may use to resolve this question in a way consonant with the Constitution and the intent of the legislature.

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are useful in evaluating the ability of a continuous marker in discriminating between the two states of a binary outcome such as diseased/not diseased. The most popular parametric model for an ROC curve is the binormal model which assumes that the marker is normally distributed conditional on the outcome. Here we present an alternative to the binormal model based on the Lehmann family, also known as the proportional hazards specification. The resulting ROC curve and its functionals (such as the area under the curve) have simple analytic forms. We derive closed-form expressions for the asymptotic …

The stashR package (a Set of Tools for Administering SHared Repositories) for R implements a simple key-value style database where character string keys are associated with data values. The key-value databases can be either stored locally on the user's computer or accessed remotely via the Internet. Methods specific to the stashR package allow users to share data repositories or access previously created remote data repositories. This essay reviews Excusing Crime, by Jeremy Horder, Reader in Criminal Law and Tutor in Law at Worcester College, Oxford. It describes Horder’s project, which is to build a complex taxonomy of criminal law excuse practices and to use that account of “why things are as they are” to argue, on the basis of his version of liberal theory, against “the restricted range” of excuses in the UK and elsewhere. By virtue of his appreciation that some, but not all, excuses contain justificatory elements, and given his insistence that pure claims of non-responsibility are not excuses, Horder has defined a …

Winners of $250 scholarships at the recent Southwestern Oklahoma State University Basketball Festival included (second from left) Lynn Mendoza of Clinton and (third from left) G.H. Hise of Sayre. The pair won the scholarships in a drawing held in conjunction with the festival featuring basketball teams from Clinton, Sayre, Anadarko and Weatherford. This study was an attempt to determine if a change in teaching methodology would have a positive effect on the outcome, as measured by a chapter test, of an algebra class. The research involved a pretest-posttest control group design of two sections of an eighth grade algebra class. The control group received the standard instructional practice, known as the "direct method", while the treatment group received the same "direct method" and additional "constructive" methodology in the form of manipulatives and group reading of the subject matter.
