Prediction Of Job Completion Times And Optimal Overtime Allocation For Satisfying Production Due Dates, Olivia Liu Nov 2006

Prediction Of Job Completion Times And Optimal Overtime Allocation For Satisfying Production Due Dates, Olivia Liu

Theses

One of the important aspects contributing to the competitiveness and success of a manufacturer is the efficient management for timely order delivery. After production orders are scheduled, there arises the need of a support tool to aid in the analysis with the available information, and to support managerial decision making which ultimately aims at on-time delivery. One way in which companies can meet due-dates of orders that are in jeopardy of being late, is to schedule overtime. This research presents a method used for 1) predict the completion times of scheduled jobs; and 2) optimizing overtime allocation when delays are …

Finding Common Ground In The World Of Electronic Contracts: The Consistency Of Legal Reasoning In Clickwrap Cases, Robert L. Dickens Nov 2006

Finding Common Ground In The World Of Electronic Contracts: The Consistency Of Legal Reasoning In Clickwrap Cases, Robert L. Dickens

ExpressO

Electronic contractual arrangements have raised complex legal issues unprecedented in the law. Technology s impact on traditional contract law doctrines is readily apparent in the dilemmas generated by recent developments in computer software, hardware, and Internet transactions. In such transactions, sellers have increasingly begun utilizing “clickwrap” agreements, whereby standard terms and conditions are displayed on the computer screen when the user attempts to access the seller’s services. Not surprisingly, the enforceability of clickwrap terms, which are often not known to the user until after payment, has become a subject of much debate in the courts. Because many of the clickwrap …

Deracialization Or Racialization: The Making Of A Black Mayor In Jackson, Mississippi, Byron D. Orey Nov 2006

Deracialization Or Racialization: The Making Of A Black Mayor In Jackson, Mississippi, Byron D. Orey

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

In 1997, Harvey Johnson made history by becoming the first black to be elected as mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. Four years prior, Johnson failed to make the Democratic primary runoffs. The following research question is addressed: what explains Johnson’s victory in 1997, when compared to his defeat in 1993? In answering this question, I rely heavily on elite-level interviewing and newspaper accounts. I also examine the black and white vote for Johnson, using aggregate-level election and census data. Gary King’s Ecological Inference technique is used to examine these data. Based on the findings, I conclude that Johnson ran a deracialized …

The Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Instruction: A Comparative Study Of Instructional Methods And Student Characteristics, John R. Mergendoller, Nan L. Maxwell, Yolanda Bellisimo Nov 2006

The Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Instruction: A Comparative Study Of Instructional Methods And Student Characteristics, John R. Mergendoller, Nan L. Maxwell, Yolanda Bellisimo

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This study compared the effectiveness of problem-based learning (PBL) and traditional instructional approaches in developing high-school students’ macroeconomics knowledge and examined whether PBL was differentially effective with students demonstrating different levels of four aptitudes: verbal ability, interest in economics, preference for group work, and problem-solving efficacy. Over all, PBL was found to be a more effective instructional approach for teaching macroeconomics than traditional lecture–discussion (p = .05). Additional analyses provided evidence that PBL was more effective than traditional instruction with students of average verbal ability and below, students who were more interested in learning economics, and students who were most …

The Effect Of A Problem-Centered, Enculturating Experience On Doctoral Students’ Self-Efficacy, Joanna C. Dunlap Nov 2006

The Effect Of A Problem-Centered, Enculturating Experience On Doctoral Students’ Self-Efficacy, Joanna C. Dunlap

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Preparing students to be effective leaders in their organizational and professional settings is a common goal of leadership preparation programs. However, students often lack confidence to share their knowledge and expertise in public forums. This study addressed whether the use of the rich environments for active learning (REAL) instructional model increased students’ self-efficacy regarding contributing to the professional community of practice through scholarship (i.e., research and study) and publication. Twelve doctoral students preparing to be educational leaders published an online journal. This study demonstrated how engaging students in problem-centered, enculturating activities that reflected the true nature of educational leadership and …

Perceptions Of The Value Of Problem-Based Learning Among Students With Special Needs And Their Teachers, Brian R. Belland, Peggy A. Ertmer, Krista D. Simons Nov 2006

Perceptions Of The Value Of Problem-Based Learning Among Students With Special Needs And Their Teachers, Brian R. Belland, Peggy A. Ertmer, Krista D. Simons

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

While problem-based learning (PBL) has been found to be effective with gifted and average students (Hmelo-Silver, 2004), little is known about its impact on students with special needs. This study examines the perceptions of middle-school students with mild, moderate, and severe disabilities and of their teachers regarding the value of participating in a PBL unit. The unit focused on the physical accessibility of a low-SES, rural community where the students’ school was located. We used the constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) to analyze interview data, and used observation data and artifacts to triangulate interview comments. Among the noteworthy findings …
