Multiscale Habitat Associations Of Three Primary Burrowing Crayfish, Shane Welch
All Dissertations
The distribution and habitat associations of three primary burrowing crayfish species were examined at the landscape and patch scales. GIS based predictors were used to model the species occurrence across the study landscapes and vegetation structure data were used to model crayfish abundance within landscape patches. Distocambarus crockeri, a species endemic to the piedmont physiographic region of South Carolina was a terrestrial habitat specialist at broad because of its association with well drained ridge-top soils. Within these soils D. crockeri were dependent on open treeless habitats. The species habitat was consistent with early descriptions of the region and suggested that …
The Extrinsic Apoptotic Pathway In Aged Skeletal Muscle: Roles Of Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha And Interleukin-15, Emidio E. Pistilli
The Extrinsic Apoptotic Pathway In Aged Skeletal Muscle: Roles Of Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha And Interleukin-15, Emidio E. Pistilli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Apoptosis is implicated in the loss of skeletal muscle mass following periods of reduced activity (i.e.-disuse) as well as during the normal aging process (i.e.-sarcopenia). Aging is also characterized by elevations in circulating cytokines, specifically TNF-alpha, which has been associated with the sarcopenic process. The specific signaling components that participate in the pro-apoptotic pathway downstream of the type I TNF receptor (i.e.-extrinsic apoptotic pathway) within skeletal muscle have not been clarified. Additionally, few studies have been performed with the aim of disrupting this apoptotic pathway, and thereby sparing muscle mass in the aged. Therefore, the purposes of this dissertation were …

Evaluation And Optimization Of Central Vision Compensation Techniques, Ahmed M. El-Sherbeeny
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Non-costly, non-invasive, safe, and reliable electronic vision enhancement systems (EVES) and their methods have presented a huge medical and industrial demand in the early 21st century. Two unique, vision compensation and enhancement algorithms are reviewed and compared, qualitatively optimizing the view of a restricted (or truncated) image. The first is described as the convex or "fish-eye" technique, and the second is the "cartoon superimposition" or "Peli" technique (after the leading author for this research). The novelty in this dissertation is in presenting and analyzing both of these with a comparison to a novel technique, motivated by characterization of quality vision …

Express Risk Assessment For The Dispersion Of Aerosols In An Urban Environment Using Probabilistic Implicit Tracking, Steven Lee Rowan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The dispersion or transport of an airborne aerosol, whether the result of pollution or terrorist attack, is a topic of much interest to researchers and governmental officials in the United States. Due to this, there have been numerous efforts to develop accurate aerosol dispersion models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and Lagrangian Particle Dynamics (LPD) in order to predict how an aerosol-suspended material will propagate in an urban environment. However, the complexity of these models require significant amounts of computational resources and are not practical for quickly modeling an actual event.;In this study, a stochastic simulation of Probabilistic Implicit Tracking …

Multiple Message Broadcasting And Gossiping In The Dynamically Orientable Graphs, Gayane R. Goltukhchyan
Multiple Message Broadcasting And Gossiping In The Dynamically Orientable Graphs, Gayane R. Goltukhchyan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research investigates the problems of gossiping and multiple message broadcasting in dynamically orientable graphs of different network topologies. These are new problems never attempted before. Dynamically orientable graphs and six different network topologies are considered: paths, cycles, stars, binary trees, complete trees and two-dimensional grids. Information dissemination in graphs that are dynamically orientable requires that number of messages sent in each direction along an edge be balanced and therefore necessitates a different approach in gossiping and multiple message broadcasting.;The obvious upper bound for gossiping and multiple message broadcasting in dynamically orientable graphs is twice the best known time for …

Differential Binding Of Hnrnp K, L And A2/B1 To An Exonic Splicing Silencer Element Located Within Exon 12 Of Glucose -6 -Phosphate Dehydrogenase Mrna, Brian Nelson Griffith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The expression of most lipogenic enzymes is regulated through the effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on transcription. However, we have observed that the regulation of Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) by polyunsaturated fatty acids occurs through a novel posttranscriptional mechanism. RNA reporter assays were used to map the cis-acting element by measuring the regulation of each RNA reporter construct transfected into primary rat hepatocytes. All RNA reporter constructs were regulated by polyunsaturated fatty acids with the exception of RNA reporter constructs lacking exon 12. Therefore, polyunsaturated fatty acids regulate the constitutive splicing of G6PD mRNA through a cis-acting element located within …

Esterase Inhibition By Grapefruit Juice And Its Components Leads To Newly Identified Drug Interactions, Ping Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Grapefruit juice (GFJ) is well known to be a potent inhibitor of the CYP3A enzyme leading to drug-drug interactions. This study describes a newly identified potential of GFJ in mediating pharmacokinetic drug-drug interactions due to its capability of esterase inhibition. The study demonstrates that GFJ inhibits purified porcine esterase activity towards para-nitrophenylacetate (PNPA) and the prodrugs lovastatin and enalapril. In rat and human hepatic or gut S9 fractions and rat gut lumen GFJ inhibited the hydrolysis of enalapril and lovastatin, which are known to be metabolized principally by esterases, with lovastatin metabolized also by CYP3A. In Caco-2 cells, permeability of …
Neutral Density Profiles In Argon Helicon Plasmas, Amy M. Keesee
Neutral Density Profiles In Argon Helicon Plasmas, Amy M. Keesee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A diode laser-based laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) diagnostic has been developed that can measure three species; argon neutrals, argon ions, and helium neutrals. This diagnostic has been combined with passive emission spectroscopy and a neutral argon collisional-radiative (CR) model to measure ground state radial density profiles of argon atoms in a helicon source. We have found the ground state neutral argon atoms to have a 60% on-axis depletion for a typical helicon mode case, yielding a 28% ionization fraction. The depletion decreases to 20% with a 9.8% ionization fraction for a second helicon mode case, indicating that slight changes in plasma …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
To enhance and optimize sport performance, athletes are training at increasingly higher levels of intensity, volume and frequency. When increases in any of these areas of training are not accompanied by adequate recovery, over time, decrements in performance and physical/psychological maladies can result. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to monitor five competitive swimmers during a swimming season in two of the potential areas in which an adverse response to training may appear: the immunological parameter of mucosal immune function and the psychological parameter of mood state. Each parameter was assessed once per week over the seven weeks of …
Multispectral Iris Recognition Analysis: Techniques And Evaluation, Christopher K. Boyce
Multispectral Iris Recognition Analysis: Techniques And Evaluation, Christopher K. Boyce
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis explores the benefits of using multispectral iris information acquired using a narrow-band multispectral imaging system. Commercial iris recognition systems typically sense the iridal reflection pertaining to the near-infrared (IR) range of the electromagnetic spectrum. While near-infrared imaging does give a very reasonable image of the iris texture, it only exploits a narrow band of spectral information. By incorporating other wavelength ranges (infrared, red, green, blue) in iris recognition systems, the reflectance and absorbance properties of the iris tissue can be exploited to enhance recognition performance. Furthermore, the impact of eye color on iris matching performance can be determined. …

An Interpolation Method For Stream Habitat Assessments With Reference To The Crystal Darter, Kenneth Richard Sheehan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Crystallaria asprella spp. (Elk River crystal darter) is documented only in Elk River, West Virginia. Little life history detail is known about this lotic, benthic-dependent species. Previous studies have led to a very basic understanding of the use of depth, flow and substrate of the crystal darter (Crystallaria asprella), and less is known about the Elk River crystal darter. Due to substrate-specificity in crystal darters (which reportedly bury in sand), a study concerning benthic stream habitat modeling was undertaken. Substrate and depth modeling using >5% of an area sampled at a resolution of 0.093 m2 square spatial data in a …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early accounts of the Harlan County mine wars place the inability of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) to establish a permanent foothold in the county, first at the feet of the Harlan County Coal Operators Association (HCCOA) and secondly at the worn work boots of miners who, when work was plentiful, saw little or no need for a union. The power of the HCCOA is not in question. Its members used their immense wealth and influence to build a million dollar war chest to fight the union and to maintain their iron-clad grip upon the county's political, judicial, …
