Portrayal Of Mathematicians In Fictional Works, Daniel Dotson
Portrayal Of Mathematicians In Fictional Works, Daniel Dotson
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Portrayal of Mathematicians in Fictional Works," Daniel Dotson explores how people with mathematical abilities -- including mathematicians, mathematics teachers, mathematically-inclined youths, cryptographers, and more -- are portrayed in novels, films, television programs, and a play. A summary table of the characters gives a short description of each of them, the title of the work in which they appeared, and the format of the work. Characters were analyzed to see if they possessed any of ten personality traits: obsessive, having major mental health problems, withdrawn, brave, timid, socially inept, arrogant, uses math to escape reality, out of touch, …

Mosquitos Associated With Equine West Nile Virus Cases In Southeastern Georgia, Calvin William Hancock
Mosquitos Associated With Equine West Nile Virus Cases In Southeastern Georgia, Calvin William Hancock
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Mosquito populations associated with equine and avian cases of West Nile Virus infections in five counties in southeastern Georgia were sampled in 2003 and 2004. More than 10,500 mosquitoes representing over 20 species were collected at 25 sites using light traps and vacuum aspirators. Of these, 8,500 mosquitoes were tested for the presence of West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus, and Saint Louis Encephalitis Virus in 411 separate pools of 1-50 mosquitoes. No virus positive mosquitoes were detected. Blood meals from 377 engorged specimens caught at these sites were identified as of mammalian, avian, or reptile/amphibian origin using serological …

Observation Of Fano Asymmetry In Raman Spectra Of Srtio3 And Cax Sr1-Xtio3 Perovskite Nanocubes, Sarbajit Banerjee, Dae In Kim, Richard D. Robinson, Irving P. Herman, Yuanbing Mao, Stanislaus S. Wong
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
Bulk SrTi O3 is cubic and not expected to exhibit any first-order Raman scattering. However, nanocubes of SrTi O3 with an edge length of 80±10 nm show strong first-order Raman scattering originating from the breaking of symmetry caused by frozen surface dipoles (local tetragonality) and the presence of nanoscopic polar domains (arising from incorporated impurities). Rapid polarization fluctuations within these nanoscopic ferroelectric regions interfere with a polar phonon, resulting in a Fano-like asymmetric line shape in these SrTi O3 nanocubes, as well as in Ca0.3 Sr0.7 Ti O3 nanocubes.

Body Dissatisfaction And Other Sociocultural Factors As Predictors Of Body Image Perceptions In Sorority And Non-Sorority Women, Kiley Elizabeth Winston
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore body dissatisfaction and other sociocultural factors as predictors of body image perceptions in college-aged sorority and non-sorority women. The Social Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-3) (Thompson et al, 2004), the Body Dissatisfaction subscale of the Eating Disorders Inventory 3 (EDI-3) (Garner, 2004), the Body Image Assessment (BIA) (Williamson et. al., 1985), the Mother Influence Scale, Parent Involvement Scale and the Peer Influence Scale (Thompson, Heinberg, Altabe, & Tantleff-Dunn, 1998) were used. The sample for this study included a total of 502 college age women N sorority = 322 and Nnon-sorority= 180. Data …
Generating Paraphrases With Greater Variation Using Syntactic Phrases, Rebecca Diane Madsen
Generating Paraphrases With Greater Variation Using Syntactic Phrases, Rebecca Diane Madsen
Theses and Dissertations
Given a sentence, a paraphrase generation system produces a sentence that says the same thing but usually in a different way. The paraphrase generation problem can be formulated in the machine translation paradigm; instead of translation of English to a foreign language, the system translates an English sentence (for example) to another English sentence. Quirk et al. (2004) demonstrated this approach to generate almost 90% acceptable paraphrases. However, most of the sentences had little variation from the original input sentence. Leveraging syntactic information, this thesis project presents an approach that successfully generated more varied paraphrase sentences than the approach of …
Biomolecular Tuning Of Electronic Transport Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes Via Antibody Functionalization, Kasif Teker, Dr. Eric Wickstrom, Balaji Panchapakesan
Biomolecular Tuning Of Electronic Transport Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes Via Antibody Functionalization, Kasif Teker, Dr. Eric Wickstrom, Balaji Panchapakesan
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are remarkable solidstate nanomaterials due to their unique electrical and mechanical properties. The electronic properties of nanotubes combined with biological molecules such as proteins could make miniature devices for biological sensing applications. In this paper, the noncovalent interaction of single-wall CNTs with antibodies is presented for its potential applications for detecting overexpressed cell surface receptors in breast cancer cells. The degree of binding of antibodies on CNTs was found to be more than 80% for an extended sampling area by confocal microscopy. The key to achieve such high degree of functionalization is due to the separation of …

Molecular Systematics And Population Structure In The North American Endemic Fish Genus Cycleptus (Teleostei: Catostomidae), Michael Lee Bessert
Molecular Systematics And Population Structure In The North American Endemic Fish Genus Cycleptus (Teleostei: Catostomidae), Michael Lee Bessert
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The overarching theme of this research was to investigate hierarchical levels of relatedness in natural populations of the cycleptid fishes (blue suckers), a widespread genus in North America that is of conservation concern throughout. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences revealed that the two described Cycleptus species, C. elongatus and C. meridionalis are not reciprocally monophyletic, yet do not share any haplotypes. Although lineage sorting is incomplete, Bayesian coalescent analyses indicate that the two groups diverged early in the Pleistocene and have been reproductively isolated since. Whether they should be synonymized as C.elongatus and recognized as subspecies is open for …

Physics
CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) is an experiment proposed to infer the effective Majorana mass of the electron neutrino from measurements on neutrinoless double beta decay (0νDBD). The goal of CUORE is to achieve a background rate in the range 0.001 to 0.01 counts/keV/kg/y at the 0νDBD transition energy of 130Te (2528 keV). The proposed experiment, to be mounted in the underground Gran Sasso INFN National Laboratory, Italy, is realized by cooling about 1000 TeO2 bolometers, of 750 g each, at a temperature of 10mK. We will describe the experiment, to be cooled by an extremely …

It has been proposed that the Borana Plateau has markedly changed in terms of land cover and land use in recent decades, but no hard data have been available to critically assess this claim. In addition, systematic analysis of soil properties has been limited. Research was designed to measure changes in land cover/land use over 30 years in the 400-km2 Yabelo District of southern Ethiopia using three satellite images taken at an average interval of 15 years. Samples were also collected to assess variation in the physical and chemical properties of dominant soils. Results indicated that Yabelo District has indeed …
