Analysis Of Hat Sectioned Reinforced Composite Beams Including Thermal Effects, Kashif Ali Nayyer Syed
Analysis Of Hat Sectioned Reinforced Composite Beams Including Thermal Effects, Kashif Ali Nayyer Syed
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
A simple analytical method for analyzing fiber reinforced polymeric composite beams with hat cross-section is presented. The method includes development of closed-form expression of the axial, bending and their coupling stiffness matrices for the composite beams. The stiffness matrices are obtained by transforming the actual geometrical cross-section of the beam into an equivalent plate using transformation matrices and Parallel Axis theorem. Ply stresses due to mechanical as well as thermal load can easily be obtained at any given location of the beam section. In this approach, the effect of induced in-plane deformation due to bending for an unsymmetrical cross-section is …

Generation Planning And Market Operation Strategies In The Southwest Power Pool Energy Imbalance Service Market, Kittipong Methaprayoon
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The transition of the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) from its traditional operation under tariff towards the new market environment has significant impact on the utilities in the SPP footprint, both in terms of planning and operations. The new market regulation creates the need for the utilities to reassess their planning strategy, primarily to ensure that operational decisions conform to the new market rules while remain profitable under the new operating regime. The utilities are referred to as Market Participants (MP) under the new market scheme. The new market environment will expose the MPs to a large amount of information with …
Fiber Optic Scanner Using Electromagnetic Actuation With Different Ferromagnetic Materials, Pratibha C. Phuyal
Fiber Optic Scanner Using Electromagnetic Actuation With Different Ferromagnetic Materials, Pratibha C. Phuyal
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
A fiber optic scanner capable of scanning medical imaging actuated by an external magnetic field is designed and characterized using different magnetized and non magnetized ferromagnetic materials. Cobalt, Iron, Nickel, and Samarium Cobalt powders were used before and after magnetization to perform the actuation. Plastic optical fiber and a silica optical fiber are coated with 70 % enamel paint with 30 % different ferromagnetic materials mixed using brush. Due the low Young's Modulus, the plastic optical fiber could not actuate like silica optical fiber. Therefore, the silica fiber was used to conduct the experiments. The static and dynamic measurements were …

The continuing debate over the causes, effects and future implications of European colonialism and imperialism is perhaps best viewed through a transatlantic lens. The various phases of imperialism from 1415 through 1914 provide ample time and examples of this continuous cultural interchange. The last of these interchanges, forced or otherwise, is that of the New Imperialism of 1860-1914. Discussions of later globalization and economic/cultural imperialism are not covered. That discussion is a different subject perhaps requiring different tools of analysis, especially economic. The impact of this last period reverberates through the current world discussion on rights, obligations, morality and law, …
Fiends Who Bear The Shapes Of Men: Case Studies On White Male And Black Female Relationships In The South, Amanda Bayne Pritchard
Fiends Who Bear The Shapes Of Men: Case Studies On White Male And Black Female Relationships In The South, Amanda Bayne Pritchard
History Theses - Archive
Slave women resisted being sexually dominated by white men, by refusing to accept that their lives were beyond their control. By examining cases of slave women who resisted white sexually assertive men, I will display how women slave women resisted the status of sexual subjugation, and instead used their sexuality to manipulate situations to improve their quality of life. Slave women were not immune to the sexual corruption in the South, but they used their circumstances to provide themselves with a healthier lifestyle. Based upon a slave woman's response to the sexual advances of whites, one can determine that there …

Oral cancer causes 120000* deaths annually around the world and 280000* new cases are diagnosed every year. Technology has developed and the death rate of oral cancer has improved over the last few decades; hence to improve the survival rate, development of a technique able to diagnose carcinomas in its early stages is very important. OCT is a non invasive imaging technique capable to provide high resolution microstructure images of tissue. A development of in vivo OCT; capable to image tissue with micrometer resolution and able to identify pre cancerous morphological changes non invasively could improve survival rate in cancer …

A Study Of Factors Affecting Scale Roughness In The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus Atrox), Amber Gail Skach
Biology Theses - Archive
Reptilian scales are very complex with patterns across their surface like a human fingerprint. These patterns are species specific, but there has been no way to quantify differences. A new technique using the confocal microscope allows measurement of the roughness of a surface. The roughness of the scales of Crotalus atrox were measured and compared with factors such as sex, age, clade, and various environmental variables to determine if this technique may be useful in determining species. The results found that the roughness of a scale decreased as the snake aged, and was significantly different between the two clades; the …

Morphometric measurements were taken from museum specimens Emydoidea blandingii. Samples were taken from Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, New York and Minnesota as well as from Ontario, Canada. Populations of this species have become increasingly fragmented and isolated during the past century due primarily to the urbanization of North America which has included increased road related fatalities and habitat destruction. An examination of physical characteristics was conducted to determine if morphometric analysis could indicate differences among the various populations. Twenty-eight measurements were made and compared to detect physical distinctions between populations. Individuals were then classified geographically based on east (C), …
Finite Element Modeling Of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer Composites And Evaluating Its Thermal Conductivities, Raghuram Basavanahalli
Finite Element Modeling Of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer Composites And Evaluating Its Thermal Conductivities, Raghuram Basavanahalli
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
High thermal conductivity of carbon nanotubes has motivated us to study and understand the thermal mechanisms in nanocomposites. Though several theoretical models predict a high thermal conductivity for CNT reinforced polymer composites, the experimental validation are not so encouraging. A finite element model of MWNT reinforced nanocomposite is developed based on continuum mechanics approach. The finite element model is a representative volume element (RVE) with single MWNT inclusion. The inclusion is modeled based on the continuum model of MWNT as effective solid fiber [22].The interface resistance between the nanotube and the matrix material is modeled using thermal contact elements. The …

Investigation On The Mechanism Of Interface Electromigration (Em) In Copper (Cu) Thin Films, Jee Yong Kim
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This study concerns the mechanism of the interface electromigration (EM) in copper (Cu) thin films. While EM in Cu is one of the most concerned reliability failure phenomena in Cu interconnects used microelectronic devices, its mechanism is not well understood yet. In order for better understanding of the EM mechanism, this study attempt to investigate the interface EM mechanism by examining the passivation effects on Cu EM using a cross-strip structure where Cu lines are cross-stripped with different passivation layers. From the observation of the marker polarity (hillocks and voids), the interface EM mechanism is determined whether the passivation layer …

Evidence Of Competition Between Law Schools, Naushaba Zaman
Economics Theses - Archive
The purpose of this paper is to measure how competition affects tuition rates of law schools. I hypothesize that the tuition rates will go up as concentration of law schools increase. To examine how tuition varies with competition, I need to measure market structure. A variety of measures are available, such as C4, C8, and HHI; all of which have some relationship to the degree of competitiveness in an industry. I primarily use HHI as the concentration measure in this paper. I make two models for my thesis. In my first model I use a statewide measure of competition, assuming …
Hold Your Tongue: Female Speech And Male Anxieties In Early Modern England, Lindsey Nicole Lanzisero
Hold Your Tongue: Female Speech And Male Anxieties In Early Modern England, Lindsey Nicole Lanzisero
English Theses - Archive
For early Modern England, containing female speech was essential to maintaining order. Through their speech, women could raise questions about and subvert patriarchal power. The frequency of this trope shows that there was a great apprehension about what speech and the tongue could accomplish. The female tongue was used as a metaphor for many problems and issues within the culture. This thesis analyzes two body politic metaphors in which the female tongue as a character wreaks havoc on the social body. Thomas Tomkis and William Averell utilize this metaphor in very different ways. Tomkis uses comedy to communicate with rhetorical …
Housing Affordability For Households Of Color In Massachusetts, Michael E. Stone
Housing Affordability For Households Of Color In Massachusetts, Michael E. Stone
Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
While housing is deeply significant for all of us, in our society it tends to pose particular challenges to many, if not most, people of color. For one thing, households of color continue to have considerably lower incomes, on average, than White-headed households. This means that households of color can, on average, afford less and therefore have fewer housing choices available, just for economic reasons alone. Yet we are not in a world where differential housing choices are determined only by ability to pay. Residential segregation by race persists and is not merely a consequence of unacceptable practices of the …

Parental Investment And Male Ornamentation In The Eastern Bluebird (Sialis Sialis), Daniel Paul Wetzel
Parental Investment And Male Ornamentation In The Eastern Bluebird (Sialis Sialis), Daniel Paul Wetzel
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Bright plumage coloration in most birds is thought to be a product of sexual selection. Brighter, more-ornamented males are preferred by females because their plumage conveys information regarding the quality of the individual. One measure of male quality is willingness to invest in offspring. In birds, investment is usually measured as the rate at which nestlings are provisioned. However there are other forms of parental investment. The purpose of this study is to quantify the relationship between two measures of parental investment and their association with structural plumage coloration in male Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis). I found there was no …
Derrida, Deconstruction And A Dialogue On The Contemporary Nursing Curriculum, Catherine Louise Gilbert
Derrida, Deconstruction And A Dialogue On The Contemporary Nursing Curriculum, Catherine Louise Gilbert
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This theoretical inquiry utilizes the philosophy of Jacques Derrida and deconstruction to begin a discourse on the disconnect between student learning and nursing education within the academy. By entering into a thoughtful, reasoned and responsible critique of the nursing curriculum, this journey of discovery examines those constructs integral to nursing education: students, teachers, identity, the art and science of nursing, the curriculum, power and control, and the university, their (dis)connectedness and begins a dialogue that positions nursing education as the legitimate professional nursing curricula for the next millennium. This journey of discovery recognizes an underlying thesis; meaningful learning that facilitates …
Incomplete Compensation And Migration Behavior: Has Anything Changed Between 1990 And 2000?, William E. Herrin, David E. Clark, Thomas Knapp, Nancy White
Incomplete Compensation And Migration Behavior: Has Anything Changed Between 1990 And 2000?, William E. Herrin, David E. Clark, Thomas Knapp, Nancy White
School of International Studies Faculty Articles
Spatial equilibrium models rely on migration to arbitrage away differences in utility across locations net of moving costs, where remaining differences in wages and rents reflect the compensating differentials related to site-specific amenities. Recent refinements to the spatial equilibrium model focus upon the prospect of disequilibrium in amenity markets. Amenity market disequilibrium implies over- or undercompensation (incomplete compensation) across some locations, which suggests a role for these factors in subsequent migration. This paper follows the theoretical and empirical approach of Clark, Herrin, Knapp, and White (2003). An intercity wage regression is estimated where fixed effects capture the impact of site …

In 2003, Wilson Creek running through Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in central Kentucky was restored to its original winding path through a valley field. Early 20th century settlers had previously redirected this creek to run a straight path along the eastern hillside in order to maximize the valley for farming. As part of the restoration to its pre-settler path, seven ponds were created in the corridor of the old streambed, which created habitat for pond-breeding amphibians. Sampling began one year after construction was complete, and over two years the amphibian assemblages of these ponds were compared to those of …

Gary Snyder's Idiosyncratic Buddhist Poetics And The "Razoredge"., David Gerhardt Thimme 1970-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gary Snyder's poetry conveys Zen states of consciousness through unconventional grammar and syntax. From his first book Riprap in 1959 to his last collection of poems, Mountains and Rivers Without End in 1996, he has confronted the challenge of transforming Buddhist philosophy and discourse into Western poetics. Snyder's syncretism pertaining to Buddhist and Native American beliefs form a unique view of Zen that suggests his precise involvement with the meditative self-discipline may be unstable and elusive. A close reading of Snyder's idiosyncratic Buddhist poetics reveals an impasse between a "non-verbal" realm, where the Cartesian duality of subject and object dissolves, …
