This study of the impact of video conferencing in students' interactivity in gender segregated universities was conducted at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) as a gender segregated university. The purpose of the study was to identify the affect of video conferencing technology on student-student, and student-instructor interaction. Moreover, the study examined students' willingness tQ participate in BlackBoard online discussion as a strategy to increase student-student and student-instructor interactions in video conferencing courses at gender segregated universities.

The purpose of this study was to understand higher education organizations as if they were texts and from that perspective to determine how motive was expressed and community was created through the mission statements of a class of higher education organizations. The mission statements of Carnegie comprehensive doctoral institutions of higher education with a medical and/or veterinary school were rhetorically analyzed and the results organized into groups much as chemists organized elements into the periodic table. The goal of this paper is to examine the impact of Initial Public Offerings (IPO) on the investment strategies of young entrepreneurial firms. Hypotheses are developed from the finance, strategy and top management team literature. These are then tested using multivariate methods in order to study post-IPO investment behavior of a global sample of young Internet firms.

Ipo Firm Executives, Compensation, And Selling, Jaemin Kim, Kuntara Pukthuanthong

IPO firm executives are significant net sellers in the year immediately following the IPO year. Two significant variables affecting their sales are the number of stock options exercised during the year and the number of shares held at the end of the preceding year. Contrary to the findings of the previous studies, the number of stock options and the number of restricted stocks turn out to be insignificant. The evidence suggests that IPO executives sell mainly to realize a significant part of their undiversified wealth; however, they do not sell to explicitly hedge against stock option grants or to exploit …

Industry Effects And Banking Relationship As Determinants Of Small Firm Capital Structure Decisions, Timo P. Korkeamaki, Matthew W. Rutherford

This work examines the leverage ratios of firms covered by the 1998 SSBF Survey. We find that small firms in general are significantly more levered than their larger counterparts in an industry-matched Compustat sample, but the difference is at least partially explained by differences in industry distributions of the two samples. Our regression results provide some interesting contrasts to previous studies. In examining the effects of relationship banking on deviations from industry leverage norms, we find that a close banking relationship is related to a lower leverage, even after controlling for industry medians, and also that firms with a closer …

Use Of Debt Covenants In Small Firms, Chenchuramaiah T. Bathala, Oswald D. Bowlin, William P. Dukes

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper examines the structure of debt covenants in small firms, with emphasis on privately owned firms. It is based on a survey of a large sample of firms drawn from the S&P Register of Corporations. The findings show that debt covenants imposed on small firms differ according to the firm type (privately owned or publicly owned), debt level, the borrowing cost, and the source of financing (bank or other sources). The evidence is generally consistent with the arguments relating to stockholder-bondholder agency cost conflicts and the Costly Contracting Hypothesis of Smith and Warner (1979).

Capital Structure In Small Manufacturing Firms: Evidence From The Data, Susan Coleman

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This article examines theories of capital structure pertaining to small firms and looks at the capital structure of small to mid-sized manufacturing firms within the context of those theories. Results provide support for Leland and Pyle's (1977) Signaling Theory, Myer's (1984) Pecking Order Theory, Berger and Udell's (1998) Life Cycle Theory. Contrary to the findings of prior research, these results revealed that industry sector was not a significant determinant of capital structure. Rather, these findings show that capital structure in small to mid-sized firms is determined by measures of firm size, firm age, organizational status, profitability, and asset structure.

Deforestation that happened during past decades in the Amazon Basin has been potentially affecting the global climate and carbon-cycle by contributing a vast amount of carbon into the atmosphere. Above-ground biomass (AGB) estimation of secondary successional and mature forests using remote sensing technology has been attracting scientists' attention. Optical sensor data are sensitive to forest canopies only, and therefore have limitations in AGB estimation, especially for tropical forests with complex structures and abundant species. Radar signals have the ability to penetrate canopies to detect the sub-layers of forests, and therefore potentially have a better performance in AGB estimation. Based on …

Increased temperature in urban areas compared to rural areas is known as the urban heat island (UHi) effect. The effects of UHI on ecosystem processes can indicate the potential effects of global warming on processes such as organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling, etc. It was reported that the urban isolates of two fungal species ( Chrysosporium pannorum and Trichoderma koningii) appeared to have adapted to higher temperatures in urban oak forest compared to rural isolates. Since these fungi decompose chitin, releasing ammonium, the apparent adaptation of these fungi to higher temperatures is probably due to increased chitinolytic enzyme activity …

Depression is a common condition that is often poorly detected in primary care medical settings. The elderly often fail to receive appropriate attention to their mental health needs, possibly due to physician's interpretation of physical and emotional changes as part of the normal aging process. The purpose of this study was to explore physicians' identification of depression and to determine whether age-related factors and gender impact recommendations for patient care. There has been recent scholarship by Bradley and Merino (1994) and Vangermeersch (2005) on this event and the subsequent eventual firing of Stuart Chase by the FTC. Bradley and Merino’s scholarship was limited to 1918 and 1919. Vangermeersch’s scholarship was limited to two narrow time periods (Oct. 20, 1919 and then from June 1920 to mid January 1921). I am still hopeful my efforts will inspire an historian to do a 1000 page biography on Stuart Chase. The second is further example why my idea of using Verne’s book as the basis for a one-day management seminar is worth trying.

I present new comparisons of AGN optical, UV, and X-ray variations. These reveal complex relationships between the different passbands that can change with time in a given object. While there is evidence from several objects that X-ray and optical activity levels are correlated on long timescales, variations on shorter timescales can occur independently. It is proposed that the combination of correlated and uncorrelated short-timescale variability is a consequence of anisotropic high-energy emission. We report on the relative optical variability of the three brightest nearby quasars, 3C 273, PDS 456, and PHL 1811. All three have comparable absolute magnitudes, but PDS 456 and PHL 1811 are radio quiet. PDS 456 is a broadline object, but PHL 1811 could be classified as a high-luminosity Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1). Both of the radio-quiet quasars show significant variability on a timescale of a few days. The seasonal rms V-band variability amplitudes of 3C 273 and PDS 456 are indistinguishable, and the seasonal rms variability amplitude of PHL 1811 was only exceeded by 3C 273 once in …

The Origin Of Wavelength-Dependent Continuum Delays In Agns – A New Model, C. Martin Gaskell

A model of wavelength-dependent lags in optical continuum variability of AGNs is proposed which avoids the problems of the popular “lamppost” model. Rather than being due to reprocessing of high-energy radiation from a hypothetical source above the accretion disk, the wavelength-dependent delays observed from the B to I bands are instead due to contamination of an intrinsically coherently variable continuum with the Wien tail of the thermal emission from the hot dust in the surrounding torus. The new model correctly gives the size, wavelength dependence, and luminosity dependence of the lags, and quantitatively predicts observed color hysteresis. The model also …
