”Kinesio taping” is a newly developed technique frequently used for the treatment of soft tissue lesions. The Kinesio Tex tape has the skin like elastic property and can be applied with tension at the soft tissue lesion site. Species Richness And Abundance Estimates Of Small Mammals In Zaraninge Coastal Forest In Tanzania, H. Y. D. Kiwia

A study on small mammals (<2 kg) was conducted in Zaraninge Forest, Coast Region, Tanzania, in the dry and wet seasons from 1994 to1996. The forest was found to harbour 11 small mammal species from 11 genera and seven families. There was high similarity in the number of species caught during the two seasons (Sørensen Coefficient (CCs)=0.92), implying there to be minimal migration of the species in the area. A total of 159 individuals were caught during the dry season, rodents accounting for 89.3% of the total catch and insectivores 10.7%. The most common species were Cricetomys gambianus and Grammomys dolichurus that had trap successes of 2.83 and 1.11 respectively. During the wet season 185 animals were caught, rodents accounting for 92.4% of the total catch and insectivores 7.6%. Cricetomys gambianus was significantly more abundant during the dry season. Graphiurus murinus was not caught in this season and no trend in abundance was detected for the other species. Forest specialist species included Paraxerus palliatus and Petrodromus petersi. No species was endemic to the forest, near-endemic species that occur in coastal and Eastern Arc forests included P. petersi and Beamys hindei. B. hindei also occurs in a few other East African forests. Threatened species are B. hindei and P. palliatus that are vulnerable and P. petersi that is endangered. Lepus capensis is in Appendix I of CITES list and Hystrix cristata and Mellivora capensis in Appendix III. The forest, though small is in good health and fairly well protected, therefore the species are not in danger of being locally extinct in the near future.

Limnological Studies Of The Pelagic Zone Of Lake Tanganyika At Kigoma, Tanzania., F. M. M. Chale

Some limnological parameters and chlorophyll a were determined for twelve months at a pelagic station near Kigoma. Temperatures ranged between 25.7 ºC and 27.3 ºC at the surface, and 24.1 oC and 24.7 oC at100 m. Thermal stratification persisted throughout the year with the thermocline oscillating between 15 m in October and 60 m in May. Dissolved oxygen concentrations were high at the surface, ranging between 6.59 mg l-1 and 8.15 mg l-1, while at 100 m the concentrations ranged from less than 0.20 mg l-1 to 1.94 mg l-1. A study on the large mammals of Zaraninge Forest was conducted using the line transect method between 1995 and 2001. They comprised 16 species from 7 families, including Bovidae (5), Canidae (1), Cercopithecidae (4), Felidae (1), Galagonidae (2), Orycteropodidae (1) and Suidae (2). Only nine species of primates and antelopes were encountered frequently enough for densities to be estimated. A total of 404 sightings from 40 counts were recorded, the majority being for blue monkey (34.9%) and Angolan colobus (26.0%). A unique sandstone known as the Bet el Ras sandstone, supposedly of Holocene age, occurs profusely along the western coast of Unguja but more extensive at its locality area, Bet el Ras, where it forms a rocky shore. The sandstone has been blasted in the past for construction of the sea wall that fronts the Zanzibar Town, and stands to be blasted further for renovation works. Evaluating The Performance Of Leucaena Accessions For Agroforestry In Sub-Humid Environment, Southern Tanzania, A. E. Majule

The performance of Leucaena accessions on acid soils in eastern coast Tanzania for agroforestry was evaluated for three years. Plant tree parameters assessed were fodder yield and plant stem height, stem girth, the number of total branches and poles production. Also, Leucaena psyllid, a common pest threatening the plants was also counted. Soil parameters assessed were pH organic carbon, total nitrogen, exchangeable calcium and magnesium. Result showed significant difference in growth between Leucaena accessions. In this paper results of geophysical exploration studies to identify potential areas with groundwater resources at Kwamndolwa and Mwisho wa Shamba Villages in Korogwe District have been presented. The resistivity curves of eight sites at the two study areas were obtained using field data measurements made based on the application of a vertical electrical sounding (VES) method. The resisivity values obtained for sites VES-K3 and VES-M2 were found to be 10.9 and 24.0 ohm-m respectively. Objective: To evaluate the impact of the National Cholesterol Educational Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) and the Framingham Offspring Study on Omani diabetic subjects. Methods: 221 subjects with type 2 diabetes (86 females and 135 males) and 156 non-diabetic subjects (70 females and 86 males) aged 30-70 years attending Sultan Qaboos University Hospital between 1999-2002 were recruited. Lipid profile, glucose, %HbA1c, apoprotein A-1 and apoproteinB were measured. Low density lipoprotein was calculated using the Friedwald formula. Correlation Between Serum Leptin Levels, Body Mass Index And Obesity In Omanis, Masoud Y. Al Maskari, Adel A. Alnaqdy

Objective: To ascertain the relationship between serum leptin levels and related variables (weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and fat percentage) in a group of Omani obese and non-obese healthy subjects. Methods: Leptin levels were assessed in serum samples from 35 obese Omanis and 20 non-obese healthy subjects. Results: There was a significant difference (p< 0.001) in serum leptin between the obese group (34.78 + 13.96 ng/ml) and the control non-obese subjects (10.6 ± 4.2 ng/ml). Leptin levels were higher in females compared to males. There was a significantly positive correlation between leptin levels in obese subjects with weight (p=0.002), body fat percentage (p=0.0001) and BMI (p=0.001). Conclusions: We concluded that serum leptin levels are higher in the Omani obese group and correlate positively with body fatness and obesity.

A 75 years old lady from the Dhaherah Province, Oman, presented at Ibri Hospital, complaining from abnormal vaginalbleeding. Histopathological investigations of a cervical biopsy revealed no atypical features. A worm-like organism was removed fromthe vagina. Histocytological investigations of the organism revealed typical structures of a leech. The case was identified as vaginalhirudiniasis, probably due to Limnatis nilotica that necessitated a note on internal hirudiniasis.
