Conducted by a committee of Canadian and US government and university scientists, Gulfwatch examines the effects of decades of development and industrialization on the water quality of the Gulf as it relates to human health as well as its impact on other marine organisms. Gulfwatch scientists collect blue mussels at over 60 US and Canadian sites Gulf-wide, and analyze the organisms’ tissue for potentially harmful levels and concentrations of toxins including heavy metals, chlorinated pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In recent years, proposals have been made to replace the federal income tax with a postpaid consumption tax - that is, a federal value added tax ("VAT"), a federal retail sales tax ("RST"), or a federal cash-flow (consumed income) tax. Because these taxes can be constructed so that they are indistinguishable at the level of the ultimate consumer in terms of their principal effects, and because a prominent recent proposal is the RST approach, I have written this article in terms of an RST/income tax comparison. Geophysical Exploration For Groundwater Resources Potential Over Basement Formations At Kwandolwa And Mwisho Wa Shamba Villages, Korogwe District, Tanzania, Cuthbert Mhilu

In this paper results of geophysical exploration studies to identify potential areas with groundwater resources at Kwamndolwa and Mwisho wa Shamba Villages in Korogwe District have been presented. The resistivity curves of eight sites at the two study areas were obtained using field data measurements made based on the application of a vertical electrical sounding (VES) method. The resisivity values obtained for sites VES-K3 and VES-M2 were found to be 10.9 and 24.0 ohm-m respectively. The interpretation of the resisivity values made for the two sites gave also an indication of the presence of sedimentary rocks composed of sandstone materials …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Lymphedema is a common sequela of breast cancer therapy. The decreased arm function with swelling, pain, numbness, and a limited range of motion, is associated with a psychological distress that affects the quality of life. There is no cure for breast cancer-related lymphedema. Complex physical therapy is currently the mainstream of therapy, combined with manual lymphatic drainage, pneumatic compression pumps and compression bandaging. The purpose of this study is to evaluate compressed air therapy as a new approach to lymphedema management.Eleven women with breast cancer-related arm lymphedema were recruited into the study. Background and Purposes: Phonophoresis has been defined as the migration of drugs through the skin under influence of ultrasound (US). The phonophoresis of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was studied in vivo through hairless rat skin to determine the temperature changes in superficial and deep tissues in response to NSAID phonophoresis.Study Design and Objectives: To measure and compare the temperature changes in tissues in response to five NSAIDs under phonophoresis. Objective: To examine the clinical characteristics of diving-related spinal cord injuries (SCI) in Taiwan.Methods: This study is a retrospective reviewarticle of all hospitalized patients with spinal cord injuries due to diving accidents in three rehabilitation centers between January 1982 and July 2002. Demographic data and clinical features were presented and analyzed. Results: A total of 1216 spinal cord injuries were reviewarticleed, and 16 cases (1.3%) met the inclusion criteria. Their mean age at the time of injury was 26.8 years and 15 (94.0%) of the cases were male. All of the injuries resulted in tetraplegia and 11 (69.0%) were neurologically …
