The Anchor, Volume 120.08: November 1, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Impact Of Multiple Fluency Interventions On A Single Subject, Jennifer Morra, Diane H. Tracey

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study investigates the effectiveness of multiple fluency interventions on a single subject in grade three. Fluency interventions, including choral reading, echo reading, repeated reading, audio book modeling, and teacher modeling were implemented over a period of eight weeks. Results indicated that using multiple fluency strategies, rather than a single fluency strategy as is usually investigated, was positively associated with improvement in oral reading

This study explores the integration of users into the design process. The research is related to participatory design and ‘designing for experiencing’. It challenges traditional designers to work closer with users. There are several projects done by adapting current participatory design tools and approaches into the new product-service development process. However, conflicts and misunderstanding about their contribution still exist. Rationales For Role Playing In Design, Stella Boess

In approximately the last ten years, there have been reports of of role playing techniques in the designrelated literature. The paper examines the rationales being given in the literature for its adoption. Three rationales are identified: communication within the design process, the increase of technological complexity, and the experience and empathy of designers. The paper then develops a fourth rationale that could warrant the use of role playing techniques: attentiveness to social change. This paper explores the elision of public and private realms in the interior at advent of the 21st century. “The Fluid Contemporary Interior,” covering the mid-1980s to the present, surveys the interior spaces of the house, the apartment, the loft, the office, civic spaces, religious spaces, cultural spaces, retail spaces, restaurants, hotels, and therapeutic spaces. Reflections On Equality, Adjudication, And The Regulation Of Sexuality At Work: A Response To Kim Yuracko, Orly Lobel

San Diego Law Review

I make three observations on Yuracko's thesis to explain these ideas. First, in Part II, I argue that it is possible to explain the case law distinctions between various categories of BFOQ claims within the liberal model of antidiscrimination. Specifically, I turn to a more robust analysis of the antisubordination paradigm than Yuracko describes in her paper. I argue that we should consider the dangers of under-inclusion in one sector as the result of structural inequalities across the workforce. The evolution of post-structuralism as the intellectual paradigm of the second half of the Twentieth Century was accompanied by a simultaneous critical discourse concerned with the relationship between space and power. Central to this discourse is the work of the French intellectual Michel Foucault, whose analyses of the disciplinary societies of the Nineteenth Century established the multivalent tactics of power and its affiliations with architectural space. Through his examinations of hospitals, mental asylums, prisons and educational institutions Foucault demonstrated the way that space co-operated with authoritarian principles to turn communities into individuals and subsequently those individuals into subjects. "Wherever there is design, there is rhetoric"—in this way Kenneth Burke's quotation from 1950 can be modified in order to describe the fundamental relation between the two disciplines. Rhetorical scholarship provides a set of rules and techniques for effective communication as well as a system, how to apply them with the most impact on the audience. In the approach introduced in this paper, rhetorical scholarship is transferred to design. Therefore, we present a model, which describes the design process from a theoretical point of view. However, the real life of buildings as we experience them is anything but fixed, pure, or timeless. In order to survive, buildings have to be as chimerical and cunning as the people who made them.
