Perceptually Meaningful Image Editing: Depth, Reynold J. Bailey, Cindy Grimm Jan 2006

Perceptually Meaningful Image Editing: Depth, Reynold J. Bailey, Cindy Grimm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We introduce the concept of perceptually meaningful image editing and present two techniques for manipulating the apparent depth of objects in an image. The user loads an image, selects an object and specifies whether the object should appear closer or further away. The system automatically determines target values for the object and/or background that achieve the desired depth change. These depth editing operations, based on techniques used by traditional artists, manipulate either the luminance or color temperature of different regions of the image. By performing blending in the gradient domain and reconstruction with a Poisson solver, the appearance of false …

The Real Effect Of Warm-Cool Colors, Reynold J. Bailey, Cindy M, Grimm, Chris Davoli Jan 2006

The Real Effect Of Warm-Cool Colors, Reynold J. Bailey, Cindy M, Grimm, Chris Davoli

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The phenomenon of warmer colors appearing nearer in depth to viewers than cooler colors has been studied extensively by psychologists and other vision researchers. The vast majority of these studies have asked human observers to view physically equidistant, colored stimuli and compare them for relative depth. However, in most cases, the stimuli presented were rather simple: straight colored lines, uniform color patches, point light sources, or symmetrical objects with uniform shading. Additionally, the colors used were typically highly saturated. Although such stimuli are useful in isolating and studying depth cues in certain contexts, they leave open the question of whether …

Creating Conservation, Megan Selby Jan 2006

Creating Conservation, Megan Selby

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Once seen as entertainment organizations, many American zoos now strongly promote themselves as agencies of biodiversity conservation, a reorientation prompted in part by growing public concern about endangered species. Funding, research, conservation efforts, and captive breeding programs are the concrete tools that allow zoos to lay claim to their contributions, but it is their more subtle cues that leave a lasting impression with zoo visitors. The exhibits, layout, signage, and presentations reflect prevailing attitudes about nature, wildlife, exotic species, and shape ideas about how animals live their lives and what they are like in the wild. This project examines tensions …

Newfound Religion: Mothers, God, And Infanticide, Susan Ayres Jan 2006

Newfound Religion: Mothers, God, And Infanticide, Susan Ayres

Faculty Scholarship

This essay focuses on cultural constructions of infanticide and psychosis, especially cases in which the mother heard delusional commands to kill her children. Part I examines the background of the Yates, Laney, and Diaz cases. Part II explores whether these mothers can be seen paradoxically as feminist subjects of empowerment rather than as victims. This essay argues that psychotic mothers have been disempowered and silenced, so their acts cannot be seen as subversive feminist gestures. Part III, however, arguest that the legal trials of Laney and Diaz demonstrate a possible subversion through trial strategy. These two trials more fully told …

The Public-Private Security Partnership: Counterterrorism Considerations For Employers In A Post-9/11 World, Andrew P. Morriss Jan 2006

The Public-Private Security Partnership: Counterterrorism Considerations For Employers In A Post-9/11 World, Andrew P. Morriss

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the range of issues employers confront as a result of the federal government's reliance on private sector efforts as part of the war on terror. These include statutes protecting employees' positions while they serve on active duty, private activities by employees related to security concerns (e.g., the Arizona Minutemen, employees carrying concealed weapons), and employee involvement with charities and other organizations labeled as terror-connected. The Article also discusses the role of private security forces hired by employers and policy issues surrounding their cooperation with public security forces.

The Grasp Of The Ice-Cold Hand: The Emergence Of A New Kind Of Gothic In Emily Bronte’S Wuthering Heights, Alexis M. Stellner Jan 2006

The Grasp Of The Ice-Cold Hand: The Emergence Of A New Kind Of Gothic In Emily Bronte’S Wuthering Heights, Alexis M. Stellner

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

This study provides evidence for an age bias in face recognition. Younger adults viewed short video clips of young actors or of actors over the age of 60 performing everyday actions. One week later, participants were tested on their memory for these events. Recognition event types included same, completely new, and conjunction items. In conjunction items, a familiar actor performed a familiar action that had actually been performed by someone else during encoding. Participants performed well at picking out the new and old events, but had more difficulty distinguishing between the conjunction events. Younger adults were significantly worse at recognizing …

Freedom Of The Press In Wartime, David A. Anderson Jan 2006

Freedom Of The Press In Wartime, David A. Anderson

University of Colorado Law Review

The Press Clause of the First Amendment should be understood to require the government to permit coverage of war. Up to now, the Supreme Court has ascribed little independent significance to the Press Clause. It has protected the press under the Speech Clause when possible, and denied press claims that would require reading the Press Clause as creating rights not guaranteed to all speakers. Logistical and security concerns, however, make it impossible to give all speakers the access necessary to cover war. In all wars, the military tries to suppress news coverage that might undermine public support for the war. …

Adverse Possession And Conservation: Expanding Traditional Notions Of Use And Possession, Alexandra B. Klass Jan 2006

Adverse Possession And Conservation: Expanding Traditional Notions Of Use And Possession, Alexandra B. Klass

University of Colorado Law Review

At common law, very minimal actions were needed to establish the "exclusive possession " necessary to acquire land by adverse possession when the land was "wild" or undeveloped. This minimal burden to adversely possess wild lands, which is still the general rule today, stands in contrast to the much higher standard necessary to adversely possess developed lands. This article explores why the lesser standard for adverse possession of wild lands remains a threat to many of the millions of acres of land in this country that are still undeveloped. This article then proposes that courts modernize the adverse possession doctrine …

Shopping Badly: Cognitive Biases, Communications, And The Fallacy Of The Marketplace Of Ideas, Derek E. Bambauer Jan 2006

Shopping Badly: Cognitive Biases, Communications, And The Fallacy Of The Marketplace Of Ideas, Derek E. Bambauer

University of Colorado Law Review

The model of the "marketplace of ideas" governs critical decisions in American jurisprudence on regulating communications. This theory holds that, over time, we collectively process ideas and information to separate truth from falsehood. State intervention is therefore unnecessary and undesirable, for it may prevent us from discovering inelegant but useful ideas. However, research in cognitive psychology and behavioral economics shows that we operate with significant, persistent perceptual biases that undercut this model's assumptions. The marketplace model errs in describing how we interact with information; accordingly, it cannot reliably assess when regulation is desirable. We should discard the marketplace of ideas …

Not Part Of The Game Plan: School District Liability For The Creation Of A Hostile Athletic Environment, Toni Wehman Jan 2006

Not Part Of The Game Plan: School District Liability For The Creation Of A Hostile Athletic Environment, Toni Wehman

University of Colorado Law Review

Title IX has played a crucial role in changing our nation's treatment of women in education, leading to awareness about the harms of sexual harassment on both female and male students. However, in one area, Title IX jurisprudence draws a line between protected students and students who are not protected from sexual harassment. That line is determined by whether the harassment facing the student is because of perceived sexual orientation or perceived failure to adhere to gender stereotypes. School athletics is an environment wrought with such harassment that can include gender insults, i.e. "you throw like a girl" or sexual …

Book Review: "Hardwired Behavior: What Neuroscience Reveals About Morality", Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2006

Book Review: "Hardwired Behavior: What Neuroscience Reveals About Morality", Stacey A. Tovino

Scholarly Works

The field of neuroethics has been described as an amalgamation of two branches of inquiry: the ethics of neuroscience and the neuroscience of ethics. The ethics of neuroscience, which has received considerable attention over the past three to four years, is concerned with the ethical principles that should guide brain research and the treatment of neurological disease, as well as the effects that advances in neuroscience have on our social, moral, and philosophical views. The neuroscience of ethics, which has received considerably less attention, may be described as a scientific approach to understanding ethical behavior. Psychiatrist and lawyer Laurence Tancredi …

A Training Model: The Effects Of Mental Rehearsal On The Performance Of Elite Collegiate Nordic Skiers, Jennifer Lynn Conant Jan 2006

A Training Model: The Effects Of Mental Rehearsal On The Performance Of Elite Collegiate Nordic Skiers, Jennifer Lynn Conant

Master's Theses and Capstones

In today's competitive athletic world, the one common goal all athletes share is to win. The pressure to carry out this goal is staggering and as a result, athletes are training harder for longer hours and ultimately burning out. While there are numerous books that attempt to teach an athlete how to train physically for their sport, very few training programs teach them how to train mentally for their sport. A training program that does not include both a physical and mental aspect will fail.

This model introduces a training program where interested Nordic ski coaches can implement the training …

An Intervention Tool For Use Against Gender Stereotypes In Children, Sarah N. Muller Jan 2006

An Intervention Tool For Use Against Gender Stereotypes In Children, Sarah N. Muller

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study examines the occurrence of gender stereotyped beliefs and behaviors in young children and methods of intervening against gender stereotypes. Current literature on gender stereotype interventions is reviewed and evaluated. A new model of intervention, based on a coloring book made up of gender counterstereotypic images, is proposed. Implications and limitations are discussed.

Aiding Foster Children In Their Construction Of Self: Clinical Intervention Strategies For Children In Care, Cheryl Regal Jan 2006

Aiding Foster Children In Their Construction Of Self: Clinical Intervention Strategies For Children In Care, Cheryl Regal

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis looks at the development of the self within foster children and examines clinical intervention strategies that focus on the internal world of the child. Using architectural metaphors, this thesis aims to change the perspective within which clinicians think about the experience of the foster child and their view of self. Within this framework, the counseling experience works to bring the foster child out from behind their protective walls and journeys with the child through their past and present histories. Throughout this journey, the clinician joins with the child and allows an attachment bond to develop in order for …

Current Intrapartum Care Practices In India, Rizwana Rizwana Jan 2006

Current Intrapartum Care Practices In India, Rizwana Rizwana

Master's Theses and Capstones

According to the annual report of the Government of India, 100,000 women annually continue to die because of childbirth related complications (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Government of India), 2000-2001). In India, over 90% of women become mothers and a majority of them deliver without skilled assistance during delivery. This translates to approximately 30 million women in India experiencing pregnancy every year, and 27 million having live births (Bakshi, 2006). Of these, 136,000 maternal deaths occur every year due to childbirth complications, most of which can be prevented. Literature reveals that lack of appropriate care during pregnancy and childbirth, …

Augmented Reality Device For First Response Scenarios, Robert Andrzej Bogucki Jan 2006

Augmented Reality Device For First Response Scenarios, Robert Andrzej Bogucki

Master's Theses and Capstones

A prototype of a wearable computer system is proposed and implemented using commercial off-shelf components. The system is designed to allow the user to access location-specific information about an environment, and to provide capability for user tracking. Areas of applicability include primarily first response scenarios, with possible applications in maintenance or construction of buildings and other structures. Necessary preparation of the target environment prior to system's deployment is limited to noninvasive labeling using optical fiducial markers. The system relies on computational vision methods for registration of labels and user position. With the system the user has access to on-demand information …

A Mixed-Methods And Multi-Level Investigation Of The Effects Of A Crew Chief Intervention On Job Attitudes, Occupational Stress, And Organizational Commitment, Michael Charles Leo Jan 2006

A Mixed-Methods And Multi-Level Investigation Of The Effects Of A Crew Chief Intervention On Job Attitudes, Occupational Stress, And Organizational Commitment, Michael Charles Leo

Dissertations and Theses

High-profile instances of workplace violence and increased pressure from competitors have threatened the viability of one of the nation's largest employers, the United States Postal Service (USPS). As a result, the USPS began a massive change effort in the early 1990's. One of the initiatives implemented to improve labor-management relations was a derivative of the self-managed work team known as the crew chief program. This study provides a mixed-methods and multi-level approach to understand the impact this unique program had on organizational attitudes.

The first aim of this study was to investigate whether the crew chief program reduced employees' stress …

This essay reviews Allan Farnsworth's final book, Alleviating Mistakes: Reversal and Forgiveness for Flawed Perceptions (Oxford U. Press 2004). There are many kinds of mistakes. One kind - a rational, well-intended decision or act that results in unanticipated, negative consequences - was the principal subject of Allan Farnsworth's previous foray into the realm of contractual angst: Changing Your Mind: The Law of Regretted Decisions (Yale U. Press 1998). Another kind - the subject of this book - is a mistake caused by an inaccurate, incomplete, or incompetent mental state at the time of an act or decision that results in …

Let The Damages Fit The Wrong: An Immodest Proposal For Reforming Personal Injury Damages, Elaine W. Shoben Jan 2006

Let The Damages Fit The Wrong: An Immodest Proposal For Reforming Personal Injury Damages, Elaine W. Shoben

Scholarly Works

The modern legislative approach to tort reform has been a piecemeal process of altering single rules rather than reconsidering the fundamental principle of compensatory damages--the goal of making victims whole. When some aspect of damage doctrine has become disfavored, such as joint and several liability, legislatures and sometimes courts have made a change in that one rule. Lawmakers have focused little on the overall remedial scheme in tort and even less on the basic premise of compensatory damages and whether it is still justifiable.

Rather than comment on the wisdom of piecemeal reform, this article questions the premise of compensatory …

The Science Of Persuasion: An Initial Exploration, Kathryn M. Stanchi Jan 2006

The Science Of Persuasion: An Initial Exploration, Kathryn M. Stanchi

Scholarly Works

The purpose of this Article is to enhance knowledge of effective persuasive legal writing by taking the exploration in a somewhat different direction from the traditional approaches. This Article argues that it is critical for persuasive writers to study the existing social-science data about human decisionmaking. Trial lawyers have taken serious steps to study and probe social science for ideas about how to persuade (or pick) juries. Yet, decades after Jerome Frank reminded us that judges, like juries, are human, appellate lawyers have been slow to follow their trial brethren in the pursuit of scientific data about what persuades people. …

Paradise Impaired, Katherine Joy. Bernhard Jan 2006

Paradise Impaired, Katherine Joy. Bernhard

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

This thesis examines the duality of meaning conveyed by John Milton's use of language in the epic poem, Paradise Lost, specifically repetition, pairing, alliteration and puns. Following a long tradition of close readings, especially critics RA. Shoaf and Christopher Ricks, I argue that Milton conceives the Fall of Adam and Eve as a falling into polysemy, or multiplicity of signification. Very few critics have undertaken a close reading of words that signal coupling in the poem, and their relationship to pairs and oppositions relevant to Genesis. Shoaf identifies pairs and oppositions in the poem as duals and duels, and connects …

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Heather J. Boyer Jan 2006

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Heather J. Boyer

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

This thesis will investigate the ways in which Hillary Rodham Clinton, former First Lady of the United States and the Junior United States Senator from New York State, appropriated strategies of liberal feminism in her political career as the first modern, working mother to serve as First Lady. A feminist First Lady, Clinton broke through the social expectations placed upon that role in an unprecedented manner by taking an active part in the political strategy and substance of her husband's administration. Her successful campaign for the United States Senate in 2000 as the first former First Lady to hold such …

"It Is Our Duty To Sing", Matthew J. Snyder Jan 2006

"It Is Our Duty To Sing", Matthew J. Snyder

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Great War veteran David Jones's poem about the war, In Parenthesis, has been attacked by literary critics Paul Fussell and Evelyn Cobley on the grounds that the poem, usually read as an instance of "literature of protest" against the war, indicates Jones's ideological complicity with the war through its extensive allusions to heroic Celtic myth, British literature, and Catholic liturgy. This thesis argues that Jones's intricate allusive network represents a mythopoetic method of endurance, a way of making order amidst the chaos of the Western Front. Jones's mythopoetic method, which I call allusive "seeing," serves as both a psychological defense …

Racial Violence, Christine Lynn. Sylvain Jan 2006

Racial Violence, Christine Lynn. Sylvain

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

This thesis examines recent explanations of racial violence in the Los Angeles Riots of 1992, the Oldham Riots of 2001, the French Riots of 2005, and the racial violence of 1992 in Germany. In each case I outline traditional theories claiming that racial violence is caused by competition between ethnic groups for housing, jobs, and cultural identity. These theories may benefit from consideration of the historical elements that have institutionalized racial discrimination in the systematic processes of integration. In conclusion, I argue that the governmental mechanisms of integration; including citizenship models, context of state formation, immigration policy, and nationalist ideology, …
