Faculty Publications

The performance of Nzi traps for tabanids (Tabanus similis Macquart, T. quinquevittatus Wiedemann, Chrysops aberrans Philip, C. univittatus Macquart, C. cincticornis Walker, Hybomitra lasiophthalma (Macquart)), stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans Linnaeus) (Diptera: Muscidae) and mosquitoes (Aedes) (Diptera: Culicidae) was investigated at various sites in Canada (Ontario, Alberta) and USA (Iowa, Florida, Louisiana). Traps made from selected fabrics, insect nettings and hand-dyed blue cotton were compared to the African design to provide practical recommendations for temperate environments. Comparisons of substituted materials showed that trap performance was optimal only when traps were made from appropriate fabrics in the colours produced by either copper …

A Comparison Of Optimized Link State Routing With Traditional Ad-Hoc Routing Protocols, Pore Ghee Lye, John C. Mceachen Dec 2006

A Comparison Of Optimized Link State Routing With Traditional Ad-Hoc Routing Protocols, Pore Ghee Lye, John C. Mceachen

United States Navy: Publications

The performance of mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) is related to the efficiency of the routing protocols in adapting to frequently changing network topology and link status. This paper addresses the issue by comparing the relative performance of three key ad-hoc routing protocols: Destination-sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), Ad-hoc Ondemand Distance Vector (AODV) and Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR). The protocols are tested based on two scenarios, namely, tactical networks for ships and sensor-based network nodes. Four performance metrics were measured by varying the maximum speed of mobile hosts, network size and traffic load, to assess the routing capability and protocol efficiency. …

Remediation Of Risks In Natural Gas Storage Produced Waters: The Potential Use Of Constructed Wetland Treatment Systems, Brenda Johnson

All Theses

Natural gas storage produced waters (NGSPWs) are generated in large volumes, vary in composition, and often contain constituents in concentrations and forms that are toxic to receiving system biota. This research had three major objectives: 1) Characterize NGSPWs to discern the constituents of concern present in these waters; 2) Design and measure performance of a pilot-scale hybrid constructed wetland treatments system (CWTS) for treating NGSPWs, and; 3) Discern the reliability of the Turner Designs TD500 handheld fluorometer for measurement of oil-in-water in produced waters containing algae. Produced waters contained chlorides, metals, and organics as constituents of concern. Using simulated produced …

Tannic Acid Crosslinked Collagens And Potential For Breast Tissue Engineering, Cheryl Parzel Dec 2006

Tannic Acid Crosslinked Collagens And Potential For Breast Tissue Engineering, Cheryl Parzel

All Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop and assess a potential key feature in a minimally-invasive breast reconstruction device and to collect information for an in vitro tissue test system. Tannic acid is a hydrolysable plant tannin, and it has been determined that tannic acid functions as a collagen crosslinking agent through both hydrogen bonding mechanisms and hydrophobic effects. Additionally, current research suggests that tannic acid may have anti-tumor properties. Therefore, it has been proposed that tannic acid can be used as an agent to induce apoptotic processes in any transplanted adult stem cells that are inclined to spontaneously …

Following In Their Footsteps: The Risks Of The Intergenerational Cycle Of Incarceration Among Inmates And Their Children, Megan Harris Dec 2006

Following In Their Footsteps: The Risks Of The Intergenerational Cycle Of Incarceration Among Inmates And Their Children, Megan Harris

All Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to test the proposition that parents who are currently incarcerated are at high risk for having children who are also incarcerated. Furthermore, several risk factors, commonly found in homes with previously or currently incarcerated members, were identified and analyzed to predict the odds of an incarcerated parent also having an incarcerated child.
The current study found that the majority of the demographic variables were significant predictors of child incarceration. Furthermore, only a few risk factors were found to be significant predictors of an inmate's child being incarcerated: an inmate having two or more prior …

Emission Reduction In Small Displacement Diesel Engines Using Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation, Chris Simoson Dec 2006

Emission Reduction In Small Displacement Diesel Engines Using Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation, Chris Simoson

All Theses

A reduced-order dynamic model is presented and experimentally validated to demonstrate the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation to alleviate the tradeoff between nitric oxide reduction and performance preservation in a small displacement diesel engine. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is an effective method for internal combustion engine oxides of nitrogen (NOx) reduction, but its thermal throttling diminishes power efficiency. The capacity to cool exhaust gases prior to merging with intake air may achieve the desired pollutant effect while minimizing engine performance losses.
Simulation and experimental results revealed significant NOx reductions throughout all testing scenarios using EGR, but also experienced a …

Influence Of Temperature And Polymer/ Mold Surface Interactions On Micro-Feature Replication At Ambient Pressure In Micro Injection Molding, Varun Thakur Dec 2006

Influence Of Temperature And Polymer/ Mold Surface Interactions On Micro-Feature Replication At Ambient Pressure In Micro Injection Molding, Varun Thakur

All Theses

This study assesses micro-feature replication at elevated mold temperature and ambient pressure using a variety of polymers. Moldings were made on the surface of stainless steel and silicon wafers containing features as small as 130 nm under isothermal conditions in a heated chamber by allowing polymer to spread over the features at ambient pressure. Feature replication was analyzed via AFM and SEM. Polymer behavior was characterized via melt contact angle and melt viscosity. While feature detail was well replicated, the moldings exhibited poor dimensional accuracy due to shrinkage. In general, polymers with low viscosity and surface tension comparable to the …

ABSTRACT
The landscape becomes an avenue to explore and express the process of looking, observing, finding, and gathering. I turn to the landscape to find inspiration and motivation that provokes contemplation and questions of the world around us. My work functions as an extension of my experiences, observations, and as a record of thoughts gathered from fleeting elements. The significance of the images I draw is directly tied to my quest of contemplating, understanding and questioning processes in life and how time and change leaves its mark on objects. I focus on my everyday familiar surroundings, because our daily encounters and …

Novel Evolutionary Global Optimization Algorithms And Their Applications, Hualin Wang, Okan Ersoy Dec 2006

Novel Evolutionary Global Optimization Algorithms And Their Applications, Hualin Wang, Okan Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The gray code optimization (GCO) algorithm is a deterministic global optimization algorithm based on integer representation. It utilizes the adjacency property of Gray code representation. By controlling the number of bits flipped, it searches through the space effciently. A further development of the GCO algorithm is conducted in this research to avoid getting stuck in local minima. To further improve the performance, and take the advantage of cheaper but more powerful CPUs, a parallel computation paradigm using MPI is implemented. Analysis of the mechanism of the GCO algorithm indicated that it can be modeled by mixture gaussian. This led to …

Harmonic Detection Of Resonance In Micro- And Nano- Cantilevers, Jay Gaillard Dec 2006

Harmonic Detection Of Resonance In Micro- And Nano- Cantilevers, Jay Gaillard

All Dissertations

Over the past decade there has been an explosion in the study of cantilevered beams on the micron and submicron dimension. The applications and research that involve these structures include state-of-the-art electronic components, sensors, and more recently, studies aimed at elucidating the mechanical properties of cantilevered carbon nanotubes and semiconducting nanowires. In nanoelectro-mechanical systems (NEMS), it is desirable to develop a capacitive readout method involving only two electrodes that are fully compliant with standard CMOS technology. However, the main drawback with this method is the ability to detect resonance in the presence of parasitic capacitance, which is due to the …

Development Of Fatigue Predictive Models Of Rubberized Asphalt Concrete (Rac) Containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Mixtures, Feipeng Xiao

All Dissertations

In recent years, some by-products such as crumb rubber has been used to save money, protect the environment, and extend the life of asphalt pavements. In addition, the utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is an acceptable practice in many states around the United States and many countries all over the world. However, the use of RAP containing crumb rubber has not been investigated in great detail, so it is essential to explore whether these materials have a positive effect on the fatigue life of asphalt pavement. In general, previous experience shows that the use of RAP has proven to …

The Effect Of Water Droplet Oscillations On The Scavenging Efficiency Of Micron Sized Particles, Raymond Mcdonnell Dec 2006

The Effect Of Water Droplet Oscillations On The Scavenging Efficiency Of Micron Sized Particles, Raymond Mcdonnell

All Theses

It has been hypothesized that drop oscillations and vortex shedding within the droplet wake affect the scavenging efficiency, E, of particles. However, no conclusive results have been presented on the effect these phenomena might have on particle scavenging. To address this need, experiments were conducted using oscillating water drops and water drops damped by the addition of glycerol. The scavenging efficiencies were measured for millimeter-sized droplets scavenging micron-sized particles. These results show that E is increased by drop oscillations where the particle diameter is large, but E is decreased by these oscillations when the particle diameter is small.

Measurement Of BD Mixing Using Opposite-Side Flavor Tagging, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration Dec 2006

Measurement Of BD Mixing Using Opposite-Side Flavor Tagging, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on a measurement of the Bd0 mixing frequency and the calibration of an opposite-side flavor tagger in the D0 experiment. Various properties associated with the b quark on the opposite side of the reconstructed B meson are combined using a likelihood-ratio method into a single variable with enhanced tagging power. Its performance is tested with data, using a large sample of reconstructed semileptonic B → μD0X and B → μD*X decays, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1 fb-1. The events are divided into groups depending on …

First-Known Hypnopompic Hallucination Occurring In-Hospital: Case Report, Paul Ballas D.O. (Pgy2) Dec 2006

First-Known Hypnopompic Hallucination Occurring In-Hospital: Case Report, Paul Ballas D.O. (Pgy2)

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Despite the high prevalence of hypnopompic hallucinations in the community, to our knowledge there are no reports that have been published in the English literature of these phenomenon observed by staff in the hospital setting. Psychiatric or neurological evaluation often ensues if a patient reports hallucinations in other circumstances, but when they are reported in connection with sleep, further evaluation is rarely performed because such events are common in the general populace. Our report emphasizes the distinction between hypnopompic and hypnagogic hallucination as an ongoing feature of life that someone is aware of, which we believe to be the case …

No More Cuts: The Curious Fate Of Self-Mutilation In Its Development, Zhabiz Kazeminezhad M.D. (Pgy4), Salman Akhtar M.D. Dec 2006

No More Cuts: The Curious Fate Of Self-Mutilation In Its Development, Zhabiz Kazeminezhad M.D. (Pgy4), Salman Akhtar M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

In this article, we present descriptions of four young women with relatively severe personality disorders. All four were in psychodynamic psychotherapy and all had the symptom of self-cutting. During their treatment, it became evident that their self-cutting had undergone a transformation and a new symptom had appeared in its place. In three, self-cutting was substituted by behaviors that we might call "cutting equivalents" and, in the fourth, by an enhanced self-reflective attitude and by journal-writing. We suggest that symptom-replacement for self-cutting may be common in its developmental course or in its course as it becomes influenced by psychotherapy, and that …

Psychogenic Stuttering Following A Gastric Bypass Operation: Case Report, Deborah B. Raphael M.D. (Pgy2), Frank B. Schoenfeld M.D. Dec 2006

Psychogenic Stuttering Following A Gastric Bypass Operation: Case Report, Deborah B. Raphael M.D. (Pgy2), Frank B. Schoenfeld M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

We evaluated a 44-year-old female with bipolar affective disorder who presented with a 4-month history of severe stuttering and vague neurologic complaints. She had lost 200 pounds after gastric bypass surgery two years before. A childhood sexual-abuse victim, she admits that she "hid" in her weight for most of her life. Neurological evaluation of this patient was negative, and speech-pathology evaluation revealed highly atypical stuttering. Gastric bypass patients with a history of psychiatric disorders and childhood sexual abuse may be particularly vulnerable to somatoform disorders.

What Investigations Are Ordered In Patients With First-Episode Psychosis?, Allan Shefrin M.D. (Pgy2), Derek Puddester M.D., Stephanie Greenham Ph.D., Lise Bisnaire Ph.D., Hazen Gandy M.D. Dec 2006

What Investigations Are Ordered In Patients With First-Episode Psychosis?, Allan Shefrin M.D. (Pgy2), Derek Puddester M.D., Stephanie Greenham Ph.D., Lise Bisnaire Ph.D., Hazen Gandy M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Psychiatrists are often left with the dilemma of which investigations to order in adolescents presenting with a first episode of psychosis. Blood work, urine studies, and neuroimaging studies were tracked in 13 adolescents admitted with a diagnosis of first-episode psychosis over a 13-month period to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Variation was found in the amount of investigation ordered: 85% of patients received a drug screen; 54% a CT scan; 8% an MRI; 92% a CBC with differential; 92% electrolytes. Abnormalities of CT scans were detected in 2 patients (29%); in neither case did the result lead to a …
