Emergence Of Attached Recirculating Eddy For Flow Around A Circular Cylinder Asymmetrically Placed In A Channel, Tsung-Chan Hsieh, Jiahn-Horng Chen Dec 2006

Emergence Of Attached Recirculating Eddy For Flow Around A Circular Cylinder Asymmetrically Placed In A Channel, Tsung-Chan Hsieh, Jiahn-Horng Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study discusses the emergence and development of cylinder-attached recirculating regions appearing in a fully developed flow past a circular cylinder asymmetrically confined between two infinite parallel plates. We employed a finite-volume method with the SIMPLE algorithm to compute the flow fields for various sizes and asymmetrical settings of circular cylinders. Two geometrical parameters, the blockage and asymmetry coefficients, are varied in computations. A series of computations show that the flow evolves a single asymmetrical recirculating region for the Reynolds number beyond some critical value. Its development in length bears a linear relation to the Reynolds number. Its growth rate …

Successful Transitions Of Runaway/Homeless Youth From Shelter Care, Von Eugene Nebbitt, Laura E. House, Sanna J. Thompson, David E. Pollio Dec 2006

Successful Transitions Of Runaway/Homeless Youth From Shelter Care, Von Eugene Nebbitt, Laura E. House, Sanna J. Thompson, David E. Pollio

Social Work Faculty Publications

Previous research indicates that runaway and homeless youth often achieve positive outcomes after shelter stays however few studies have examined how these outcomes are achieved. This study employs qualitative methods to explicate this phenomenon. Twenty-five providers and 21 youth from four shelters participated in this study. Youth were recruited who had completed shelter care and returned home for minimally six months. Multiple raters identified themes and created a conceptual model. While in shelter, youths experienced structure and freedom, and the family experienced respite. Once youth became involved in treatment, the family re-connected and the youth returned home. After returning home, …

Application Of Fuzzy Critical Path Method To Airports Cargo Ground Operation Systems, Tzeu-Chen Han, Cheng-Chi Chung, Gin-Shuh Liang Dec 2006

Application Of Fuzzy Critical Path Method To Airports Cargo Ground Operation Systems, Tzeu-Chen Han, Cheng-Chi Chung, Gin-Shuh Liang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

To cut down cost in a competitive environment, airlines must avoid delays and operation inefficiencies in both airside and landside. However, previous studies have paid little attention to an airlines’ ground operation in airports’ cargo terminals. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how to employ the Fuzzy Critical Path method (CPM) to find out airport’s ground critical operation processes and improve. The result of this study suggests redesigning airports’ cargo handling processes can improve airlines’ freight service performance in terms of freight handling speed, cargo service quality, and freight handling cost in hub airports.

Validation Of An Inertial Sensor System For Quantifying Knee Function, Aaron Koslin Dec 2006

Validation Of An Inertial Sensor System For Quantifying Knee Function, Aaron Koslin

All Theses

Gait analysis has become a useful tool for clinicians in evaluating the progression of pathologies through functional analysis. The high cost and dedicated laboratories associated with the traditional camera-based motion analysis systems present the need for an alternative system. Direct measurement of kinetic parameters using inertial sensors (gyroscopes and accelerometers), in place of indirect calculations from position data obtained using cameras, has been shown effective in resolving important gait parameters.
In order to directly compare gait parameters obtained using inertial sensors and a camera system, data was simultaneously collected from both systems for seven test subjects during normal gait. Three …

Statistical Methods For Kinetic Modeling Of Fischer Tropsch Synthesis On A Supported Iron Catalyst, Brian L. Critchfield Dec 2006

Statistical Methods For Kinetic Modeling Of Fischer Tropsch Synthesis On A Supported Iron Catalyst, Brian L. Critchfield

Theses and Dissertations

Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) is a promising technology for the production of ultra-clean fuels and chemical feedstocks from biomass, coal, or natural gas. Iron catalysts are ideal for conversion of coal and biomass. However, precipitated iron catalysts used in slurry-bubble column reactors suffer from high attrition resulting in difficulty separating catalysts from product and increased slurry viscosity. Thus, development of an active and selective-supported iron catalyst to manage attrition is needed. This thesis focuses on the development of a supported iron catalyst and kinetic models of FTS on the catalyst using advanced statistical methods for experimental design and analysis. A high …

Small-Scale Turbulence In A Closed-Field-Line Geometry, Paolo Ricci, B. N. Rogers, W. Dorland Dec 2006

Small-Scale Turbulence In A Closed-Field-Line Geometry, Paolo Ricci, B. N. Rogers, W. Dorland

Dartmouth Scholarship

Plasma turbulence due to small-scale entropy modes is studied with gyrokinetic simulations in a simple closed-field-line geometry, the Z pinch, in low-β parameter regimes that are stable to ideal interchange modes. We find an enormous variation in the nonlinear dynamics and particle transport as a function of two main parameters, the density gradient and the plasma collisionality. This variation is explained in part by the damping and stability properties of spontaneously formed zonal flows in the system. As in toroidal systems, the zonal flows can lead to a strong nonlinear suppression of transport below a critical gradient that is determined …

Usability Studies With Virtual And Traditional Computer Aided Design Environments, Syed Adeel Ahmed Dec 2006

Usability Studies With Virtual And Traditional Computer Aided Design Environments, Syed Adeel Ahmed

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

For both the CAVETM and the adaptable technology possessed by the University of New Orleans, crystal eye glasses are used to produce a stereoscopic view, and an ascension flock of birds tracking system is employed for tracking of the user's head position and position of a wand in 3D space. It is argued that with these immersive technologies along the use of gestures and hand movements should provide a more natural interface with the immersive virtual environment. This allows a more rapid and efficient set of actions to recognize geometry, interaction with a spatial environment, the ability to find errors, …

Modern Foraminiferal Bio-Facies Within A Transgressive Saline Influenced Deltaic Headland, South-Central Louisiana, Chandra Dreher Dec 2006

Modern Foraminiferal Bio-Facies Within A Transgressive Saline Influenced Deltaic Headland, South-Central Louisiana, Chandra Dreher

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Incorporating improved preparation techniques, modern taxonomy, and quantitative analysis of environmental variables known to influence marsh foraminifers in other coastal regions refined marsh foraminiferal biofacies of the Mississippi delta region. Elevation, pore water salinity, total carbon, and mean grain size were compared with foraminiferal distributions in a transgressive marsh system of the lower Lafourche headland of the south-central delta plain. Cluster analysis aided definition of two biofacies, one from the marsh interior and one from the marsh edge. The marsh edge biofacies was further subdivided into levee crest and bayou margin biofacies. Correlation analysis suggested that seven of the 21 …

Optical Spectroscopy To Determine Intermediate Combustion Product Radicals In A Hydrocarbon Fueled Rocket Engine Exhaust Plume, Lester A. Langford

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

With the prospect of hydrocarbon-fueled rocket engines, such as Rocket Propellant 1 (RP-1) or methane (CH4) fueled engines being considered for use in future space flight systems, the contributions of intermediate or final combustion products resulting from these hydrocarbon fuels are of great interest. The effect of several diatomic molecular radicals, such as Carbon Monoxide, Molecular Carbon, Methylene Radical, Cyanide or Cyano Radical, Hydroxyl, and Nitric Oxide, needs to be identified and the effects of their band systems on the spectral region from 300 nm to 850 nm determined. This work shows the effect of different engine operating parameters, oxidizer-to-fuel …

Onset And Persistence Of Biogenic Meromixis In A Filling Pit Lake-A Limnological Perspective , Oscar Flite Dec 2006

Onset And Persistence Of Biogenic Meromixis In A Filling Pit Lake-A Limnological Perspective , Oscar Flite

All Dissertations

Open pit mining usually results in a void that, over time, fills with water and becomes a pit lake. The goal for pit lakes is to create sustainable systems that positively contribute to local and regional watersheds. One long-standing hypothesis for attaining the goal of sustainability has been to create and maintain meromictic lakes (lakes that do not completely mix on a yearly cycle). It is believed that meromixis minimizes atmospheric oxygen exposure to pit walls and concomitant acid generation and minimizes reentrainment of metals to the upper waters during seasonal mixes. This seems to be a reasonable goal but …

The Chicano Mural Movement Of The Southwest: Populist Public Art And Chicano Political Activism, John Kenny Dec 2006

The Chicano Mural Movement Of The Southwest: Populist Public Art And Chicano Political Activism, John Kenny

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This work examines an art movement that was a direct outgrowth of a populist civil rights movement of the late 1960’s in the Southwest United States. This art, the Chicano Murals created as part of el Movimiento in San Diego, California was intended primarily as a didactic communication medium to reach into the barrios and marginalized neighborhoods for the primary purpose of carrying a resistance message to the semiliterate mestizo population within. Its secondary purpose was to bring a message from within these minority neighborhoods outward to the privileged elite, both Anglo and Hispanic, that within the confines of the …

Energy Efficient Cluster Head Selection In Fixed Wireless Sensor Networks, Irfanuddin Ahmed Dec 2006

Energy Efficient Cluster Head Selection In Fixed Wireless Sensor Networks, Irfanuddin Ahmed

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Energy is the main bottleneck for wireless sensor networks and it has dominating effects on network lifetime. Sensors have finite energy and during the process of sensing and transmitting data to the cluster head they lose energy. Sensors that are furthest away from the cluster head require more energy than the closer ones. These losses of energy cause sensors to die faster, lower coverage area and hence network death. In this paper we investigate techniques to maximize the network lifetime by selecting the most optimal cluster head. The proposed technique is in context of cluster-based wireless sensor networks, the others …

Acoustic Seabed And Target Classification Using Fractional Fourier Transform And Time-Frequency Transform Techniques, Madalina Barbu Dec 2006

Acoustic Seabed And Target Classification Using Fractional Fourier Transform And Time-Frequency Transform Techniques, Madalina Barbu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An approach for processing sonar signals with the ultimate goal of ocean bottom sediment classification and underwater buried target classification is presented in this dissertation. Work reported for sediment classification is based on sonar data collected by one of the AN/AQS-20's sonars. Synthetic data, simulating data acquired by parametric sonar, is employed for target classification. The technique is based on the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT), which is better suited for sonar applications because FrFT uses linear chirps as basis functions. In the first stage of the algorithm, FrFT requires finding the optimum order of the transform that can be estimated …

(Re)Building Cultural, Community, And Academic Identity: Freshman Composition After Katrina, Russo Celeste Del Dec 2006

(Re)Building Cultural, Community, And Academic Identity: Freshman Composition After Katrina, Russo Celeste Del

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Composition studies has become increasingly focused on the connection between place, identity, and the act of writing, maintaining, as theorist Nedra Reynolds states, that “where writing instruction takes place has everything to do with how” (20). Considering the social, political, and cultural contexts of a post-Katrina Southeastern Louisiana, administrators and instructors at the University of New Orleans must begin to question how our freshmen writing program can best serve our students as they enter into the future of a "new" New Orleans. Implementing a "localized pedagogy" into the freshmen composition classroom--that is, a community-based pedagogy that draws from local resources, …

Transformation Of Gossypium Hirsutum And Gossypium Barbadense By Rhizobium Rhizogenes: Hairy Root Induction And Gossypol Production, Stephanie Moss Dec 2006

Transformation Of Gossypium Hirsutum And Gossypium Barbadense By Rhizobium Rhizogenes: Hairy Root Induction And Gossypol Production, Stephanie Moss

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Gossypol and its methylated derivatives are produced in the leaves, seeds, stems, and roots of cotton plants. Although gossypol is toxic to many animals, other uses for gossypol are actively being investigated. To develop an experimental model for gossypol biosynthesis, a project to produce hairy root cultures from cotton was initiated. Hairy root cultures from two cotton species, Gossypium hirsutum (DPL 90) and Gossypium barbadense (Sea Island) were developed in this study. Gossypol was synthesized and retained by hairy root tissue at levels similar to that found in cottonseed. Cultures originating from a single transformation event were more similar in …

Novel Synthetic Routes To Formation Of Magnetic Nanocomposites, Anindya Pradhan Dec 2006

Novel Synthetic Routes To Formation Of Magnetic Nanocomposites, Anindya Pradhan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Novel synthetic routes to formation of gold-magnetite nanoparticles have been designed by sonochemistry. Treatment of preformed magnetite nanoparticles with ultrasound in aqueous media with dissolved tetrachloroauric acid resulted in the formation of gold-magnetite nanocomposite materials. These materials maintained the morphology of the original magnetite particles. The morphology of the gold particles could be controlled by adjusting experimental parameters, including the addition of small amounts of solvent modifiers such as methanol, diethylene glycol, and oleic acid. Further experiments were conducted with silver and titanium. Morphology and properties of nanocomposites were analyzed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive spectra (EDS), superconducting …

Anthony Eden, The Egypt Committee, And The Politics Of Prestige During The Suez Crisis, Alexander Shelby Dec 2006

Anthony Eden, The Egypt Committee, And The Politics Of Prestige During The Suez Crisis, Alexander Shelby

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The impact of the Gamal Abdul Nasser's nationalization of the Suez Canal on Anthony Eden's policy making during the Suez Crisis is the bases of this research. Using data from the Cabinet records of Eden's Egypt Committee, this research will demonstrate that Eden and the Egypt Committee acted irrationally during the Suez Crisis and by doing so created a schism in the Atlantic Alliance. This rift would force President Dwight Eisenhower to side with the Soviet Union against Britain to resolve the conflict. The effects of the crisis caused the British to lose their prestige as a world power and …

Digital Dissection Of Radiographs, Using The Early Cretaceous Bird Confuciusornis And Photoshop Cs2tm, Sirelious White Dec 2006

Digital Dissection Of Radiographs, Using The Early Cretaceous Bird Confuciusornis And Photoshop Cs2tm, Sirelious White

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the past, radiographs (x-ray "shadowgraphs") have been used by paleontologists as ways to identify and capture bone images. Primarily, this was done to examine the skeletal elements without having to remove the surrounding matrix. Radiographs have so much three-dimensional information compressed onto a two-dimension image that it is often impossible to understand the entire skeleton. Obviously, it would be desirable to strip away the readily interpretable skeleton elements and examine those less well understood. An initial set of experiments were performed on a particular section of a radiograph of Confuciusornis sanctus, as a subject, while utilizing Photoshop CS2TM to …

Bloom Filters For Filesystem Forensics, Rachel Bourg Dec 2006

Bloom Filters For Filesystem Forensics, Rachel Bourg

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Digital forensics investigations become more time consuming as the amount of data to be investigated grows. Secular growth trends between hard drive and memory capacity just exacerbate the problem. Bloom filters are space-efficient, probabilistic data structures that can represent data sets with quantifiable false positive rates that have the potential to alleviate the problem by reducing space requirements. We provide a framework using Bloom filters to allow fine-grained content identification to detect similarity, instead of equality. We also provide a method to compare filters directly and a statistical means of interpreting the results. We developed a tool--md5bloom--that uses Bloom filters …

Of "Illustrators," "Narrators," "Editors," And "Readers": Describing Relations Between Significantly Disabled Students And Their Peers, Srikala Naraian

Dissertations

This paper interweaves several theoretical strands—disability studies, narrative theories, and sociocultural perspectives on learning—both as a means to understand current practice in the education of students with significant disabilities as well as to envisage other forms of participation for them. The aims of the study are derived from the argument made by Ferguson (2003) that the narratives of others in the lives of severely disabled individuals are critical to the formation of their identities. Appropriating this idea to the classroom, this study explores the notion that the narratives of classroom peers are vital to the participation of the severely disabled …

Restoring The Right Constitution?, Eduardo M. Peñalver

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

After years of relative neglect, the past few decades have witnessed a dramatic renewal of interest in the natural law tradition within philosophical circles. This natural law renaissance, however, has yet to bear much fruit within American constitutional discourse, especially among commentators on the left. In light of its low profile within contemporary constitutional debates, an effort to formulate a natural law constitutionalism is almost by definition an event worthy of sustained attention. In "Restoring the Lost Constitution," Randy Barnett draws heavily upon a natural law theory of constitutional legitimacy to argue in favor of a radically libertarian reading of …
