Intimate Partner Homicide Methods In Heterosexual And Homosexual Relationships, Krystal D. Mize Jan 2006

Intimate Partner Homicide Methods In Heterosexual And Homosexual Relationships, Krystal D. Mize

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

From 1976 to 2001 over 50,000 people in the United States were victims of documented intimate partner lethal violence. In a study of intimate partner homicides in Chicago, Block and Christakos (1995) found that the weapon used varied based on the offender's gender. Relative to heterosexual partners, homosexual partners experience added stress due to a lack of social support of their relationships. The current study examined the effect of sex and sexual orientation of intimate partner homicide offenders on brutality of killing methods. Two hypotheses were formulated addressing the brutality of the murders as a function of the offender's sexual …

Label Routing Protocol: A New Cross-Layer Protocol For Multi-Hop Ad Hoc Wireless Network, Yu. Wang Jan 2006

Label Routing Protocol: A New Cross-Layer Protocol For Multi-Hop Ad Hoc Wireless Network, Yu. Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Compared to the traditional wireless network, the multi-hop ad hoc wireless network (simply called ad hoc networks) is self-configurable, dynamic, and distributed. During the past few years, many routing protocols have been proposed for this particular network environment. While in wired and optical networks, multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) has clearly shown its advantages in routing and switching such as flexibility, high efficiency, scalability, and low cost, however MPLS is complex and does not consider the mobility issue for wireless networks, especially for ad hoc networks. This thesis migrates the label concept into the ad hoc network and provides a framework …

Isolation And Biosynthesis Of Terpenes In Pseudopterogorgia Elisabethae And Leptogorgia Minimata, Saalfeld Silke Von Jan 2006

Isolation And Biosynthesis Of Terpenes In Pseudopterogorgia Elisabethae And Leptogorgia Minimata, Saalfeld Silke Von

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The marine environment has proven to be an extremely rich source of novel natural products with activities in a variety of biological assays. The field of marine natural products chemistry has enjoyed an explosion of growth over the past 40 years and currently there are marine-derived metabolites in clinical trials for cancer, analgesia, allergy and cognitive diseases. Even with this tremendous development, it is clear that chemists and pharmacologists are only beginning to scratch the surface of the biomedical potential of marine organisms. One problem with this source of new pharmaceuticals is that the supply of such compounds can be …

Key Management In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Bing. Wu Jan 2006

Key Management In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Bing. Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), providing secure communications is a big challenge due to unreliable wireless media, host mobility and lack of infrastructure. Usually, cryptographic techniques are used for secure communications in wired networks. Symmetric and asymmetric cryptography have their advantages and disadvantages. In fact, any cryptographic means is ineffective if its key management is weak. Key management is also a central aspect for security in mobile ad hoc networks. In MANETs, the computational load and complexity for key management are strongly subject to restriction by the node's available resources and the dynamic nature of network topology. We proposed …

Interaction Between Surface-Based And Edge-Based Motion Mechanisms In The Perception Of Apparent Motion, David F. Nichols Jan 2006

Interaction Between Surface-Based And Edge-Based Motion Mechanisms In The Perception Of Apparent Motion, David F. Nichols

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The motion of an object may be perceived based on a change in location of either its surface or edges. By isolating the luminance changes produced by a moving object from the physical displacement of its surface and edges, it was found that a static object appears to move when the luminance changes are restricted to a narrow area adjacent to it. Therefore, changes in the luminance contrast of edges are sufficient for the perception of object motion. However, the existence of different motion signals based on luminance changes of edges and surfaces was confirmed by the occurrence of different …

Iptv On Copper-Lines Converging Into "All-Optical" Trunk Transport: A Next-Generation Local-Loop Solution, Angela S. Perez Jan 2006

Iptv On Copper-Lines Converging Into "All-Optical" Trunk Transport: A Next-Generation Local-Loop Solution, Angela S. Perez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A promising next-generation version of service that could be availed from local exchange carriers (LECs) refers to streaming Internet protocol based television (IPTV) programs into subscriber premises via traditional copper pairs. The present study addresses provisioning economically-budgeted and optimally-engineered bit rates (EBRs) in implementing IPTV technology in the local-loop via copper-pairs using the so-called (ADSL2/ADSL2+) technology (with high-speed/large bandwidth considerations plus copper-bonding for bandwidth sharing capabilities). Also studied is the way to extend the backhaul transport of IPTV on copper-lines (plus any other local-loop transmissions that may co-exist) onto an "all-optical" trunk of the inter-office facilities (IOFs) in the edge/core …

Marketing The Television Apparatus For American Consumption: Producing Meaning In Contemporary Magazine Advertisements, Kimberly J. Maskevich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Contemporary magazine ads for television sets have much in common with their post WWII counterparts, the latter being produced during an era when the new technology was first getting installed in homes across the United States. Much has changed in the TV landscape since the postwar years. In particular, digital technology has altered the general terrain and set choices themselves are more diverse. Digital television began penetrating the marketplace in the 1990s and is predicted to become mainstream by 2010. Even though the cultural climate has shifted since the postwar era, along with the concept of the familial and traditional …

Isolation, Characterization And Synthesis Of New Diterpenes From Pseudopterogorgia Elisabethae, Zhongliang Wan Jan 2006

Isolation, Characterization And Synthesis Of New Diterpenes From Pseudopterogorgia Elisabethae, Zhongliang Wan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae is a known source of structurally interesting bioactive metabolites. A detailed search for new, related compounds was undertaken in this study which resulted in the isolation and characterization of more than ten new diterpenes with serrulatane and ileabethane skeletons. Some of the new compounds isolated are closely related terpenes with significant biological activity and others are likely to be key biosynthetic intermediates. As a component of the development of a production method of anti-inflammatory compounds such as seco-pseudopterosin and elisabethadione, a synthesis of a seco-pseudoperosin aglycone from elisabethatriene was developed.

Markers Of Hypoxic Stress In Fishes Of The Kissimmee River, Lynda J. Dirk Jan 2006

Markers Of Hypoxic Stress In Fishes Of The Kissimmee River, Lynda J. Dirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The channelized Kissimmee River experiences seasonally low dissolved oxygen levels which have changed the ecosystem to favor air-breathing species, while gamefish populations have declined greatly. In 2001 , the central portion of the river (Pool C) was physically restored. To evaluate the usefulness of various stress markers and assess the success of the partial restoration, the stress responses were analyzed (brain monoamines, heat shock proteins, and plasma cortisol) of air-breathing fish (bowfin, Florida gar), versus gamefish (largemouth bass and bluegill sunfish). Fish were collected from hypoxic and normoxic water at three sites in the Kissimmee River. Statistical analysis (MANOV A) …

Mitigating Worm Propagation On Virtual Lans, Xiaoguang. Sun Jan 2006

Mitigating Worm Propagation On Virtual Lans, Xiaoguang. Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Recent worms have used sophisticated propagation techniques to propagate faster than the patch distribution and have utilized previously unknown vulnerabilities. To mitigate repetition of such epidemics in future, active defense mechanisms are needed that not only identify malicious activity, but can also defend against widespread outbreak. We provide a framework capable of reacting quickly to quarantine infections. The fundamental components of our framework are detector and VLAN switch. We have provided a proof of concept implementation, where we use the Blaster worm as an example, and demonstrate that detection of worms is possible, and individual infected hosts can be isolated …

Men's Partner-Directed Insults And Sexual Coercion In Intimate Relationships, Valerie G. Starratt Jan 2006

Men's Partner-Directed Insults And Sexual Coercion In Intimate Relationships, Valerie G. Starratt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Given the negative psychological and health-related consequences of sexual coercion, recent research has focused on predicting sexual coercion. In two studies, I investigated the relationships between men's partner-directed sexually coercive behaviors and their use of partner-directed insults in the context of intimate relationships. Study 1 secured self-reports from 247 men on the Partner-Directed Insults Scale and the Sexual Coercion in Intimate Relationships Scale. Study 2 secured partner-reports from 378 women on the same measures. Across both studies, the results indicate that men's use of sexually coercive behaviors can be predicted by the frequency or content of the insults that men …

Method To Create Three-Dimensional Facial Image From Two-Dimensional Facial Data Set, Teerapat. Theerawong Jan 2006

Method To Create Three-Dimensional Facial Image From Two-Dimensional Facial Data Set, Teerapat. Theerawong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A method to create 3D-face image using 2D-face images is the objective of this research. The 3D-face image is constructed using a set of 3D-face images of other persons available in a face database. The 3D-face image actually depicts a parameterized form in terms of depth and texture. This concept can be used to facilitate creating a 3D-face image from 2D database. For this purpose, a 3D-face database is first developed. When a 2D-face image is presented to the system, a 3D-face image that starts with an average 3D-face image (derived from the 3D-face database) is projected onto the 2D-image …

Morbid Jealousy From An Evolutionary Psychological Perspective, Judith A. Easton Jan 2006

Morbid Jealousy From An Evolutionary Psychological Perspective, Judith A. Easton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Individuals diagnosed with morbid jealousy have hypersensitive jealousy mechanisms that cause them to have irrational thoughts about their partners and to exhibit extreme behaviors. Because morbid jealousy is defined as a malfunction of evolved jealousy mechanisms such that they produce increased chances of perceiving partner infidelity, research guided by an evolutionary psychological perspective can add insight to the understanding of the disorder. The present research tested eleven evolutionarily relevant hypotheses about jealousy, in an attempt to improve the understanding of the etiology of morbid jealousy. To investigate a large enough sample, I created a database of all the morbid jealousy …

Mothering And Male Masochism In Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Aurora Floyd, Denise Hunter Gravatt Jan 2006

Mothering And Male Masochism In Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Aurora Floyd, Denise Hunter Gravatt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Feminist literary critics often praise Mary Elizabeth Braddon's sensation novels for undermining Victorian gender ideologies, and yet by failing to scrutinize aspects of maternity and female sexuality, they overlook some of her work's most subversive potential. In Aurora Floyd, for instance, Braddon deploys the trope of the missing mother to deconstruct the Victorian maternal ideal of a pure, passive angel in the house. Her text proposes a notion of motherhood, which is more concerned with internal goodness and vitality, rather than with the Victorian era's emphasis on external proprieties and socially constructed notions of femininity. Braddon's Aurora is a motherless …

Now You Hear It, Now You Don't: The Effect Of Markedness On The Perception Of Unattested Clusters, Tracy J. Lennertz Jan 2006

Now You Hear It, Now You Don't: The Effect Of Markedness On The Perception Of Unattested Clusters, Tracy J. Lennertz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Linguistic theory predicts that speakers are equipped with universal sonority principles that restrict the structure of the syllable: onset clusters with sonority rises are preferred to onsets with plateaus, which are preferred to onsets with falling sonority (bn > bd > lb). We investigate the source of this preference in English, a language in which these sonority profiles are unattested. We gauged speakers' preferences for unattested onsets by examining their susceptibility to epenthetic repair. If English speakers are sensitive to onset structure, then onsets that are universally dispreferred should be more likely to elicit repair (e.g., lbif→lebif). Results from a syllable judgment …

Neural Activity Associated With Tolerance To Amphetamine Hypophagia, Kimberlee D. Bachand Jan 2006

Neural Activity Associated With Tolerance To Amphetamine Hypophagia, Kimberlee D. Bachand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

There is a growing body of literature indicating that drug effects are influenced by the context in which they are taken, and that neuroadaptations resulting from chronic drug use are similarly context dependent. Contingent tolerance to amphetamine-induced hypophagia is mediated by the learned suppression of stereotyped behaviors, and is an example of a drug-environment interaction. This form of behavioral tolerance depends upon instrumental learning, by which rats learn a strategy to suppress drug-induced stereotypies that interfere with feeding. Considerable progress has been made in understanding contingent tolerance at the behavioral level; little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying contingent …

Music, Rhetoric And The Creation Of Feminist Consciousness In The Marian Songs Of Hildegard Of Bingen (1098--1179), Beverly R. Lomer Jan 2006

Music, Rhetoric And The Creation Of Feminist Consciousness In The Marian Songs Of Hildegard Of Bingen (1098--1179), Beverly R. Lomer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation examines the sixteen songs to Mary in the Symphonia armonie celestium revelationum of twelfth century nun composer, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). The analysis demonstrates that the idiosyncratic musical style of the Symphonia cycle represents an innovative application of the rhetorical procedures of the medieval ars praedicandi and the ars dictamen to music centuries in advance of an articulated concept of musical rhetoric, and that one goal of the Marian repertory was to affect the self-consciousness of the all-female audience in a positive direction. The effect is achieved through the strategically constructed and inextricable relationship between text and melody. …

Origin And Mechanism Of Terpene Biosynthesis In Pseudopterogorgia Spp, Jennifer M. Boehnlein Jan 2006

Origin And Mechanism Of Terpene Biosynthesis In Pseudopterogorgia Spp, Jennifer M. Boehnlein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The goal of this work was to investigate the biosynthetic origins of diterpene natural products (pseudopterosins, kallolides, bipinnatins, and cembrenes) from corals of the genus Pseudopterogorgia as well as the biosynthetic pathways by which they are produced. These studies have shown that the pseudopterosins from Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae are biosynthesized within the algal symbiont (or possibly a bacterium or fungus associated with the symbiont), are not inducible by manipulation of light levels, and do not change as a result of transplantation to new locations. Studies on Pseudopterogorgia bipinnata revealed that only one chemotype is capable of biosynthesizing the kallolide family of …

Neural Correlates Of Auditory Perception, Attention And Expectation, Theodore P. Zanto Jan 2006

Neural Correlates Of Auditory Perception, Attention And Expectation, Theodore P. Zanto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation examined the neural correlates of auditory perception, attention and expectation in three experiments. Experiment 1 analyzed neural correlates of auditory perception and expectation in an electroencephalography (EEG) experiment using a temporally perturbed metronome to establish an expectation for auditory events, then violate and reestablish that expectation. High frequency evoked (phase-locked) gamma band activity (GBA) was observed to follow the onset of tones whereas induced (nonphase- locked) GBA reached maximum power simultaneously with the occurrence oftone onset. Moreover, the latency of induced GBA was perturbed after an expectancy violation and relaxed back into synchrony as the expectation was reestablished. …

Photodegradation Of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole Disulfide And Related Benzothiazoles, Zuzana Zajickova Jan 2006

Photodegradation Of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole Disulfide And Related Benzothiazoles, Zuzana Zajickova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Benzothiazoles are heterocyclic compounds used predominantly as rubber vulcanization accelerators. The overall goal of our research was to investigate the photodegradation behavior of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole disulfide, its degradation product 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and further degradation product benzothiazole. Modern analytical techniques were utilized to follow photodegradation process at arbitrary intervals. A chromatographic method using reverse phase liquid chromatography was developed for the separation of benzothiazoles in the irradiated mixture. Direct photolysis of benzothiazole and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole in methanol at 253.7 and 313 nm in the presence or absence of oxygen was investigated at first. Benzothiazole was found to undergo photodimerization into 2,2'-bibenzothiazole, and in the …

'Persistent Heterogeneity' V. 'State Dependence': A Cross-Sectional Test Of Gottfredson And Hirschi's Low Self-Control Stability Hypothesis, Sandra Medlicott Jan 2006

'Persistent Heterogeneity' V. 'State Dependence': A Cross-Sectional Test Of Gottfredson And Hirschi's Low Self-Control Stability Hypothesis, Sandra Medlicott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In A General Theory Of Crime Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) suggest that "low self-control" is an enduring individual characteristic that is the product of inadequate child-rearing. Sampson and Laub's (1993) Crime In the Making: Pathways and Turning Points Through Life somewhat supports this contention. However, the latter authors also suggest that later life experiences might change the direction of the life path (and self-control). This thesis examines whether adequate child-rearing is the key causal determinant of low self-control in later life. It further tests whether later life-course transitions might alter and/or impact low self-control. The results suggest that the impact …

Photosynthetic Pigment Ratios In Relation To Photic Flux, Cidya S. Grant Jan 2006

Photosynthetic Pigment Ratios In Relation To Photic Flux, Cidya S. Grant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The molar and weight ratios of the photosynthetic pigments of ten algal species were analyzed in an attempt to determine if knowledge of the light field could be used to give better ratios for estimating the chlorophyll a contributed from each algal division to total chlorophyll a or biomass. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is one of the tools used in pigment-based chemotaxonomy for estimating the biomass of algal communities by determining the concentrations of the various chlorophylls and carotenoids. Stable ratios of chlorophyll a: marker pigment are used as multiplying factors for calculating the amount of chlorophyll a contributed …

Prgmdh Algorithm For Neural Network Development And Its Applications, Chetan. Tangadpelli Jan 2006

Prgmdh Algorithm For Neural Network Development And Its Applications, Chetan. Tangadpelli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The existing Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) algorithm has characteristics that are ideal for neural network design. This thesis introduces a new algorithm that applies some of the best characteristics of GMDH to neural network design and develops a Pruning based Regenerated Network by discarding the neurons in a layer which don't contribute for the creation of neurons in next layer. Unlike other conventional algorithms, which generate a network which is a black box, the new algorithm provides visualization of the network displaying all the neurons in the network. The algorithm is general enough that it will accept any …

Range Assignment Problem And Security In Wireless Networks, Mohammad O. Pervaiz Jan 2006

Range Assignment Problem And Security In Wireless Networks, Mohammad O. Pervaiz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis considers two important issues in wireless networks. In first part, we address Energy-Efficient Range Assignment in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks (HRA) and in second part, we present a survey on security attacks in ad hoc wireless networks. We address the HRA problem by selecting the transmission range for each energy-constraint sensor node such that a multi-hop communication path exists between each sensor' node and a resource-rich supernode while maximum power required is minimized. This is the first work to address this problem. We propose several solutions: an Integer Programming approach, a distributed greedy protocol, and a minimum spanning …

Quorum Based Ip Autoconfiguration In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Tinghui. Xu Jan 2006

Quorum Based Ip Autoconfiguration In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Tinghui. Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

IP address autoconfiguration poses a challenge for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) because it has to be done to ensure correct routing. An IP autoconfiguration protocol that is based on quorum voting is proposed. Nodes are distributed configured when a write quorum can be collected. Making the compromise between message overhead and data consistency, quorum voting enforces data consistency by ensuring fresh read on every access so that each node is configured with a unique IP address. The protocol is scalable since the configuration information is maintained locally and no central server is involved. Extensive experiments are carried out comparing the …

Readability Analysis Of Elementary-Level Science Textbooks, Robyn Trainer Jan 2006

Readability Analysis Of Elementary-Level Science Textbooks, Robyn Trainer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Given both the unprecedented attention to the importance of providing children with the best possible science textbooks and the overwhelming evidence that students in the United States are severely lacking the most basic science knowledge, the decline in the number of students pursuing science degrees is alarming. In spite of all the efforts being made, a disparity still exists between (1) the wealth of science information available, (2) the apparent ease of access to scientific information, and (3) the lack of scientific academic progress being made in classrooms across the United States. A literature review was conducted which included the …
