Contexts And Circumstances Of Filicide-Suicide, Shanna L. Beasley Jan 2006

Contexts And Circumstances Of Filicide-Suicide, Shanna L. Beasley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The contexts and circumstances surrounding filicide-suicide may provide insight into parental psychology. The current studies used two Chicago homicide databases containing incident-level information on homicides committed in Chicago during the years 1965-1994 and 1870-1930. Results provide support for the following hypotheses: (1) genetic parents relative to stepparents are more likely to commit suicide following filicide, (2) filicides of multiple victims are more likely to end in the offender's suicide than are filicides of a single victim, (3) parents are more likely to commit suicide following a filicide of an older child than a younger child, (4) older parents, relative to …

Correlations Between Maxillary Sinus And Nasal Cavity Volume: An Exploratory Study Into Environmental Influences On The Human Maxillary Sinus, Lauren N. Butaric Jan 2006

Correlations Between Maxillary Sinus And Nasal Cavity Volume: An Exploratory Study Into Environmental Influences On The Human Maxillary Sinus, Lauren N. Butaric

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Previous hypotheses have suggested that maxillary sinus volume (MSV) is dependent on nasal cavity volume (NCV), and while NCV is highly correlated with climate, MSV is a passive by-product. To test these hypotheses 39 dried adult human crania from different climatic regions were examined using CT technology. MSV and NCV were regressed against each other and cranial size-variables using least squares and reduced major axis analysis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were also utilized to identify significant differences in MSV and NCV between populations. Results suggest that MSV and NCV are not significantly correlated, and while NCV scales with isometry …

Controlling Access To Physical Locations, Ana C. Desouza-Doucet Jan 2006

Controlling Access To Physical Locations, Ana C. Desouza-Doucet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The need to secure and control access to rooms in premises has shifted from allowing some people to enter a room to giving permission to specific persons to access a room and recording who entered the room and the time they spent in it. With such need for higher security in mind, we design an access control system for controlling physical access of people to locations or to specific units in these locations. Our study gives emphasis to the organization of physical locations, including nested rooms, and the approach used to assign permission to people to access such locations. We …

Cognition And Adherence In Older Adults Undergoing Hemodialysis, Debra J. Hain Jan 2006

Cognition And Adherence In Older Adults Undergoing Hemodialysis, Debra J. Hain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Background. Adherence to the behavioral change component of the hemodialysis regimen is difficult for many reasons; when individuals fail to adhere, the nurses often become frustrated and individuals may be labeled nonadherent leading to inappropriate interventions. As the number of older adults starting hemodialysis increases, one contributing factor to nonadherence in this population may be cognitive impairment. Objective. The overall purpose of the study was to explore differences in global cognition, in self-report cognition, and in language ability relative to adherence in a sample of older adults undergoing hemodialysis. Methods. This pilot study examined the differences in cognition and adherence …

The Interests Of "Peoples" In The Cooperative Management Of Sacred Sites, Kristen A. Carpenter Jan 2006

The Interests Of "Peoples" In The Cooperative Management Of Sacred Sites, Kristen A. Carpenter

Publications

This essay contends that there is a structural element of federal law and policy that sets up legal battles over American Indian sacred sites. The Supreme Court has held that whatever rights groups may have at sacred sites, the federal government's rights as owner and sovereign of the public lands ultimately prevails. Federal agencies can, if they choose, accommodate various interests on the public lands, but such decisions are left to fluctuating executive policy and the discretion of land managers. This approach reflects well-established doctrine in public lands law, but leaves various citizens and groups clamoring for the federal government …

Old Ground And New Directions At Sacred Sites On The Western Landscape, Kristen A. Carpenter Jan 2006

Old Ground And New Directions At Sacred Sites On The Western Landscape, Kristen A. Carpenter

Publications

The federal public lands contain places with both religious and secular value for American people. American Indians, in particular, hold certain natural features to be sacred, and visit them for ceremonies and worship. Simultaneously, non-Indians use the same places for economic, recreation, and many other purposes - and conflicts arise between these groups. In the past twenty years, a body of constitutional jurisprudence has developed to address questions of religious freedoms and public access rights on these lands that are owned and managed by the federal government. This article outlines the relevant First Amendment framework as well as recent statutes …

Learning From Wal-Mart, Melissa Hart Jan 2006

Learning From Wal-Mart, Melissa Hart

Publications

This article considers the landmark gender discrimination class action, Dukes v. Wal-Mart Stores, both as a prototype of an emerging litigation strategy and also as a case that is entirely unique. As part of a growing trend of gender discrimination class claims, Dukes has the potential to push the boundaries of the law to confront the pervasive, tenacious stereotypes that continue to limit women's workplace opportunities. The plaintiffs' arguments - both the narrative of discrimination their evidence set out and the legal strategies they chose - are strikingly similar to claims that have been made in many class action …

A Psychology Of Emotional Legal Decision Making: Revulsion And Saving Face In Legal Theory And Practice, Peter H. Huang, Christopher J. Anderson Jan 2006

A Psychology Of Emotional Legal Decision Making: Revulsion And Saving Face In Legal Theory And Practice, Peter H. Huang, Christopher J. Anderson

Publications

Professor Martha C. Nussbaum is an accomplished scholar in an impressive variety of fields. Drawing on her diverse academic backgrounds, Nussbaum has written extensively about emotions and their importance for law from the perspective of her primary specialty, philosophy. Her book Hiding from Humanity criticizes the roles that two particular emotions, disgust and shame, play in the law. Its central thesis is that, as legal actors, we should be wary of disgust and shame because indulging in those emotions allows us to hide from our humanity - both our humanity in the general sense and also those specific features of …

"Particular Intentions": The Hillmon Case And The Supreme Court, Marianne Wesson Jan 2006

"Particular Intentions": The Hillmon Case And The Supreme Court, Marianne Wesson

Publications

The case of Mutual Life Insurance Company v. Hillmon is one of the most influential decisions in the law of evidence. Decided by the Supreme Court in 1892, it invented an exception to the hearsay rule for statements encompassing the intentions of the declarant. But this exception seems not to rest on any plausible theory of the categorical reliability of such statements. This article suggests that the case turned instead on the Court's attachment to a particular narrative about the events that gave rise to the case, events that produced a corpse of disputed identity. The author's investigations into newspaper …

Rethinking The Great Lakes Compact, Mark Squillace Jan 2006

Rethinking The Great Lakes Compact, Mark Squillace

Publications

On December 13, 2005, the Governors and Premiers of the Great Lakes states and provinces signed a Compact and Agreement that commits the parties to a rigorous program to regulate individual water uses, with citizen suits to enforce the requirements. While the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact and companion Agreement are commendable in many respects, this Article argues that people who care about the future of the Great Lakes should urge policymakers to reject the current proposals and rethink the entire approach. The proposed compact is fundamentally flawed and will not achieve the ultimate stated goal of …

Regeneration Of Nature: An Alternative To Ecological Restoration, Tobin Hindle Jan 2006

Regeneration Of Nature: An Alternative To Ecological Restoration, Tobin Hindle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The Regeneration of Nature: an alternative to ecological restoration is an exploration of the human response to alterations society has imposed on natural ecosystems. Ecological restoration is the dominant response to these degraded systems that has emerged within Western, empirical thought. Restoration as it is characteristically practiced in the United States attempts to reverse human impact by returning an ecosystem to an earlier state of existence; its so called pre-disturbance condition. However, I argue that ecological restoration does not adequately address degraded ecosystems dominating today's landscape primarily because it excludes humans as an integrated part of ecosystems and it ignores …

Relationship Between School Climate And School Performance In Miami-Dade County's Schools Of Choice, Dyona V. Mclean Jan 2006

Relationship Between School Climate And School Performance In Miami-Dade County's Schools Of Choice, Dyona V. Mclean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of the study was to determine whether a relationship exists between school climate and school performance in Miami Dade County's schools of choice. More specifically, the study sought to determine: (a) the climate in Miami Dade County's magnet programs/schools of choice; (b) whether high performing (A/B) magnet programs schools have a different climate than low performing (D/F) magnet programs/schools of choice; (c) if the relationship between school climate and school performance is moderated by contextual factors; and (d) if a model can be developed to predict school performance using the variables in the study. Archival data was retrieved …

Role Of Chemical And Visual Cues By Two Sargassum Shrimps In Locating And Selecting Habitats, Corrine F. Jobe Jan 2006

Role Of Chemical And Visual Cues By Two Sargassum Shrimps In Locating And Selecting Habitats, Corrine F. Jobe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The Sargassum community is comprised of a unique and diverse assemblage of organisms. Habitat detection by two of the most common invertebrates, Latreutes fucorum and Leander tenuicornis , was investigated. Results of this study do not support that either L. fucorum or L. tenuicornis respond to chemical cues released by the Sargassum habitat in the absence of other information. Habitat selection of both shrimp species was examined as well. Both L. fucorum and L. tenuicornis selected live Sargassum over artificial Sargassum . Moreover, L. fucorum selected Sargassum natans over Sargassum fluitans when only visual cues were available, whereas large-sized L. …

Signature Whistles In Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Frontalis): Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Mothers And Offspring, Sara E. Bebus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The signature whistles of related Atlantic spotted dolphins ( Stenella frontalis) in the Bahamas were evaluated for similarity. Judges compared the contour patterns of signature whistles pair-wise between 19 dolphins. Whistle parameters between the signature whistles of individuals were statistically compared. There were no significant differences between the signature whistles of male and female calves when the similarity of their whistles was compared to their mothers. However, there was a tendency with female calves more likely to produce signature whistles similar to their mothers' whistles. Three out of five female calves produced signature whistles that were "very similar" or "similar" …

Stepparents And Genetic Parents Use Different Methods To Murder Their Children, Mary Ann Grady Jan 2006

Stepparents And Genetic Parents Use Different Methods To Murder Their Children, Mary Ann Grady

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Stepparents commit filicide more often than do genetic parents. In 1994, using Canadian and British national databases, Daly and Wilson provided evidence that there are motivational differences that may affect the methods by which stepparents and genetic parents kill their children, and that stepfathers were more likely than genetic fathers to commit filicide by methods of beating and bludgeoning, revealing greater resentment and bitterness toward their charges. Genetic fathers were more likely to kill their children by asphyxiation or shooting, perhaps to ensure a less painful and quicker death. In 2004, Weekes-Shackelford and Shackelford, using a United States national database, …

Statistical Physics Inspired Methods To Assign Statistical Significance In Bioinformatics And Proteomics: From Sequence Comparison To Mass Spectrometry Based Peptide Sequencing, Gelio Alves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

After the sequencing of many complete genomes, we are in a post-genomic era in which the most important task has changed from gathering genetic information to organizing the mass of data as well as under standing how components interact with each other. The former is usually undertaking using bioinformatics methods, while the latter task is generally termed proteomics. Success in both parts demands correct statistical significance assignments for results found. In my dissertation. I study two concrete examples: global sequence alignment statistics and peptide sequencing/identification using mass spectrometry. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (HPLC/MS/MS), enabling peptide identifications …

Software Decomposition For Multicore Architectures, Ankit. Jain Jan 2006

Software Decomposition For Multicore Architectures, Ankit. Jain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Current multicore processors attempt to optimize consumer experience via task partitioning and concurrent execution of these (sub)tasks on the cores. Conversion of sequential code to parallel and concurrent code is neither easy, nor feasible with current methodologies. We have developed a mapping process that synergistically uses top-down and bottom-up methodologies. This process is amenable to automation. We use bottom-up analysis to determine decomposability and estimate computation and communication metrics. The outcome is a set of proposals for software decomposition. We then build abstract concurrent models that map these decomposed (abstract) software modules onto candidate multicore architectures; this resolves concurrency issues. …
