Dayside Aurorae And Polar Arcs Under South-East Imf Orientation, P. E. Sandholt, M. Dyrland, Charlie J. Farrugia
Coronal Mass Ejection Research Group
We document a characteristic spatial and temporal structure of the aurora in the postnoon sector present during a 10-h-long interval of very steady southeast IMF orientation (clock angle=135°) ending in a sharp south-to-north transition. Focus is placed on the detailed morphology of auroral forms/activities corresponding to merging and lobe convection cells obtained from SuperDARN convection data and Greenland magnetograms. The ground optical instruments at Ny Ålesund, Svalbard (76° MLAT) recorded different auroral forms/activities as the station moved to higher magnetic local times (MLTs) in the 13:00–17:00 MLT sector. Whereas the 13:00–15:00 MLT sector is characterized by classical poleward moving auroral …

Analysis Of Doe Environmental Management. Economic And Environmental Issues In New Mexico, Nuclear Watch Of New Mexico
Nuclear Watch of New Mexico
In April 2003, Nuclear Watch of New Mexico (NukeWatch) was funded by the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment (MTA) Fund to conduct “Analyses of Department of Energy Environmental Management: Economic and Environmental Issues in New Mexico.”
New Mexico is home to two of the nation’s three nuclear weapons labs, the Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, with annual budgets of more than $2 billion each. New Mexico also hosts the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, the world’s only deep geological disposal site for radioactive transuranic wastes, which are primarily plutonium contaminated wastes resulting from nuclear weap- ons research and production. The …

Uniform Discretizations: A New Approach For The Quantization Of Totally Constrained Systems, Miguel Campiglia, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Uniform Discretizations: A New Approach For The Quantization Of Totally Constrained Systems, Miguel Campiglia, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We discuss in detail the uniform discretization approach to the quantization of totally constrained theories. This approach allows to construct the continuum theory of interest as a well defined, controlled, limit of well behaved discrete theories. We work out several finite dimensional examples that exhibit behaviors expected to be of importance in the quantization of gravity. We also work out the case of BF theory. At the time of quantization, one can take two points of view. The technique can be used to define, upon taking the continuum limit, the space of physical states of the continuum constrained theory of …

Knowledge, Access, And Utilization Of Health Care Resources By Minorities In Rural Areas, Cassandra Crockett
Knowledge, Access, And Utilization Of Health Care Resources By Minorities In Rural Areas, Cassandra Crockett
All Theses
This research seeks to understand how knowledge, access, and utilization of health care resources are obtained by residents in one South Carolina upstate county. In particular, whites and minorities living in rural parts of Anderson County are studied in an effort to address issues of barriers that obstruct the ability to obtain knowledge, access, and utilization of health care resources. A primary objective of this research is to determine whether or not knowledge of health care resources is a result of previously using them. In other words, are individuals knowledgeable about available health care resources before they become ill? It …

Structuring Emperical Methods For Reuse And Efficiency In Product Development Processes, Marshall Edwin Bare
Structuring Emperical Methods For Reuse And Efficiency In Product Development Processes, Marshall Edwin Bare
Theses and Dissertations
Product development requires that engineers have the ability to predict product performance. When product performance involves complex physics and natural phenomena, mathematical models are often insufficient to provide accurate predictions. Engineering companies compensate for this deficiency by testing prototypes to obtain empirical data that can be used in place of predictive models. The purpose of this work is to provide techniques and methods for efficient use of empirical methods in product development processes. Empirical methods involve the design and creation of prototype hardware and the testing of that hardware in controlled environments. Empirical methods represent a complete product development sub-cycle …

Indian Boarding Schools In Comparative Perspective: The Removal Of Indigenous Children In The United States And Australia, 1880-1940, Margaret D. Jacobs
Indian Boarding Schools In Comparative Perspective: The Removal Of Indigenous Children In The United States And Australia, 1880-1940, Margaret D. Jacobs
Department of History: Faculty Publications
This essay compares the forced removal of American Indian and Aboriginal children in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, arguing that governments intentionally removed indigenous children to institutions as acts of colonial control, not assimilation. Since colonial governments in the United States and Australia did not value traditional cultures of American Indians and Aborigines, they sought to destroy them. The essay argues that non-Natives purposely removed indigenous children to make them "useful" to non-Natives. As a result, indigenous children's institutions taught a curriculum designed to be of benefit to employers who could exploit Native labor. Every state in Australia had a …
Lehmann Family Of Roc Curves, Mithat Gonen, Glenn Heller
Lehmann Family Of Roc Curves, Mithat Gonen, Glenn Heller
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are useful in evaluating the ability of a continuous marker in discriminating between the two states of a binary outcome such as diseased/not diseased. The most popular parametric model for an ROC curve is the binormal model which assumes that the marker is normally distributed conditional on the outcome. Here we present an alternative to the binormal model based on the Lehmann family, also known as the proportional hazards specification. The resulting ROC curve and its functionals (such as the area under the curve) have simple analytic forms. We derive closed-form expressions for the asymptotic …

Interacting With Local And Remote Data Respositories Using The Stashr Package, Sandrah P. Eckel, Roger Peng
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
The stashR package (a Set of Tools for Administering SHared Repositories) for R implements a simple key-value style database where character string keys are associated with data values. The key-value databases can be either stored locally on the user's computer or accessed remotely via the Internet. Methods specific to the stashR package allow users to share data repositories or access previously created remote data repositories. In particular, methods are available for the S4 classes localDB and remoteDB to insert, retrieve, or delete data from the database as well as to synchronize local copies of the data to the remote version …

Spatial Variation In The Chemical Composition Of Natal Otholiths From A Reef Fish In The Galápagos Islands, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Robert R. Warner
Biological Sciences
Over the past decade, researchers have used variation in the chemical composition of fish otoliths (earstones) to address a number of ecological questions, such as stock assessment and assessing rates of movement of individuals among habitats or life-history stages. However, these methods have yet to be applied successfully to the study of larval connectivity, a major unanswered question in marine ecology. Accomplishing this task requires a reference collection of pre-pelagic natal otoliths and accurate measurement of the chemical signatures of otoliths cores of recruits. We analyzed the chemical composition of natal otoliths from near-term benthic eggs of a damselfish (Stegastes …
Doubling Measures, Monotonicity, And Quasiconformality, Leonid V. Kovalev, Diego Maldonado, Jang-Mei Wu
Doubling Measures, Monotonicity, And Quasiconformality, Leonid V. Kovalev, Diego Maldonado, Jang-Mei Wu
Mathematics - All Scholarship
We construct quasiconformal mappings in Euclidean spaces by integration of a discontinuous kernel against doubling measures with suitable decay. The differentials of mappings that arise in this way satisfy an isotropic form of the doubling condition. We prove that this isotropic doubling condition is satisfied by the distance functions of certain fractal sets. Finally, we construct an isotropic doubling measure that is not absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure.
How Do Christian Values, In Comparison To Other Sociocultural Values, Motivate Early Adolescent Girls In Regard To Their Body Image?, Tracy Keizer
Theses and Graduate Projects
The period of adolescence in a young girl's life is a time of differentiation and change, A young girl's journey into adolescence involves several adjustments including physical, moral, social and cognitive changes. All of the unique influences and adjustments affecting a young girl also affect her body image. These influences include the culture, media, family, friends, and a girls own personality and temperament. One influence that has not been studied is the motivation of Christian values on a young girl's body image. Christian values have the strength to positively motivate people to do many constructive things. The purpose of this …

Discovery Of Extensive Optical Emission Associated With The X-Ray Bright, Radio Faint Galactic Snr G156.2+5.7, Christopher L. Gerardy, Robert A. Fesen
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present wide‐field Hα images of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G156.2+5.7 which reveal the presence of considerable faint Hα line emission coincident with the remnant's X‐ray emission. We also present low‐resolution optical spectra for a few representative emission regions. The outermost Hα emission consists largely of long and thin (unresolved), smoothly curved filaments of Balmer‐dominated emission presumably associated with the remnant's forward shock front. Patches of brighter Hα emission along the western, south‐central, and north‐eastern regions appear to be radiative shocked interstellar medium filaments like those commonly seen in SNRs, with relatively strong [O i]λλ6300, 6364 and [S ii]λλ6716, …

A search has been made for neutrinos from the hep reaction in the Sun and from the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) using data collected during the first operational phase of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, with an exposure of 0.65 ktons yr. For the hep neutrino search, two events are observed in the effective electron energy range of 14.3 MeV < Teff < 20 MeV, where 3.1 background events are expected. After accounting for neutrino oscillations, an upper limit of 2.3 × 104 cm-2 s-1 at the 90% confidence level is inferred on the integral total flux of hep neutrinos. For DSNB neutrinos, no events are observed in the effective electron energy range of 21 MeV < Teff < 35 MeV, and, consequently, an upper limit on the νe component of the DSNB flux in the neutrino energy range of 22.9 MeV < Eν < 36.9 MeVof 70 cm-2 s-1 is inferred at the 90% confidence level. This is an improvement by a factor of 6.5 on the previous best upper limit on the hep neutrino flux and by 2 orders of magnitude on the previous upper limit on the νe component of the DSNB flux. © 2006. The Health And Nutrition Of Migrant Farm Workers In South Carolina, Abel Caballero
The Health And Nutrition Of Migrant Farm Workers In South Carolina, Abel Caballero
All Theses
ABSTRACT
Migrant farm workers--a high percentage of which are Hispanic--are an extremely disadvantaged population that experiences several barriers, including language, nutrition, transportation, and access to health services. This population also suffers from numerous diseases (obesity, diabetes, and heart disease) and experiences various hazards associated with risky work, such as pesticide exposure. This study included data collection on basic health and nutrition barriers to identify areas where programs and policies can be modified to better serve migrant farm workers. In addition, data was examined to determine the effect of all-inclusive educational intervention on nutrition, dental, fitness, and food safety issues by …
