A Simple Numerical Method Of Cycle Jumps For Cyclically Loaded Structures, D. Cojocaru, Anette M. Karlsson
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
A method for accelerated numerical simulations of structures subjected to cyclic loading is investigated. Of particular interest is a class of structures where the structural properties evolve with time. The proposed method is based on conducting detailed finite element analysis for a set of cycles to establish a trend line, extrapolating the trend line spanning many cycles, and use the extrapolated state as initial state for additional FEA simulations. This includes a control function that automatically monitors the length of the cycle jump to ensure a realistic solution. We compare the proposed method to a reference calculation, where all incremental …

Influenza A virus infects a large proportion of the human population annually, sometimes leading to the deaths of millions. The biotic cycles of infection are well characterized in the literature, including in studies of populations of humans, poultry, swine, and migratory waterfowl. However, there are few studies of abiotic reservoirs for this virus. Here, we report the preservation of influenza A virus genes in ice and water from high-latitude lakes that are visited by large numbers of migratory birds. The lakes are along the migratory flight paths of birds flying into Asia, North America, Europe, and Africa. The data suggest …

醫師的臨床技能需要被確實教導與評量,OSCE(Objective Structured Clinical Examination)是評量臨床技能的重要工具之一,近年來更成為美加與日本醫師執照考試的一部份。

Journal of Medical Education

Empathy is an essential part of a meaningful patient-physician relationship and has a positive role in clinical outcomes. Cultivating empathy is considered to be one of the most important objectives of the liberal education for physicians. The purpose of this study is to explore medical students' feelings about physician empathy and to examine the relationship between empathy and specialty preference. The Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy-Student Version, JSPE-S Version, was administered to 680 first-year medical students from seven medical schools in two consecutive years starting with the 2003 academic year. The specialty preference of the students was also collected. A …

Journal of Medical Education

An investigation on student nurses' expectation on mentors was probed into the roles and functions of mentor in nursing education. All student nurses in nursing school filled out the questionnaire, and there were 173 available samples. In general, these students were in great need of a mentor. Results indicate that more than 60% of the students want their mentors to offer counseling related to school work, adjustment of living, scholarship application, students' activities, personal and confidential communication, social skills, emotional support, intimacy skills and preparation for future employment. Among these, three areas of need required strongly by students are: information …

The Clinical Skills Unit In An Integrated Medical Curriculum: An Imu Perspective, F. I. Achike
Journal of Medical Education
The astronomical growth in technology and medical information of the last century brought with it innovations in medical education, such as the problem-based learning (PBL) which emphasizes the integration of basic and clinical sciences. The clinical skills unit (CSU) is a major facility for promoting these principles in the PBL-based curriculum of the International Medical University (IMU) which exposes students to clinical scenarios early in their training. The teaching of clinical skills is systems-based, but also holistic. From the first semester through the fifth, students are taught interviewing skills, history taking, physical examination and nursing procedures. After semester 5 they …

Multisensor Processing Algorithms For Underwater Dipole Localization And Tracking Using Mems Artificial Lateral-Line Sensors, Saunvit Pandya, Yingchen Yang, Douglas L. Jones, Jonathan Engel, Chang Liu
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
An engineered artificial lateral-line system has been recently developed, consisting of a 16-element array of finely spaced MEMS hot-wire flow sensors. This represents a new class of underwater flow sensing instruments and necessitates the development of rapid, efficient, and robust signal processing algorithms. In this paper, we report on the development and implementation of a set of algorithms that assist in the localization and tracking of vibrational dipole sources underwater. Using these algorithms, accurate tracking of the trajectory of a moving dipole source has been demonstrated successfully.

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
IPO firm executives are significant net sellers in the year immediately following the IPO year. Two significant variables affecting their sales are the number of stock options exercised during the year and the number of shares held at the end of the preceding year. Contrary to the findings of the previous studies, the number of stock options and the number of restricted stocks turn out to be insignificant. The evidence suggests that IPO executives sell mainly to realize a significant part of their undiversified wealth; however, they do not sell to explicitly hedge against stock option grants or to exploit …

The study of entrepreneurial theory and practice has now reached a significant stage at many schools of management and business. However, it appears as though even at those schools which are supposedly highly ranked, the financial aspects of entrepreneurial pursuits seem to be given rather short shrift in comparison with other aspects of entrepreneurial concerns. Nevertheless, for some time now research into IPOs, the activities of venture capitalists (so-called reputable vis-a-vis non-reputable), liquidity concerns of fledgling enterprises, venture capital arms of banks, financial aspects of business angel activities, and other such aspects of financial entrepreneurship have been well within the …

Two alternatives research hypotheses concerning how small business lending affects bank profitability are tested. The specialization hypothesis argues for higher profitability than other banks due to increased focus on small business lending, whereas the diversification hypothesis asserts that small business lenders' profitability will be lower than other more diversified banks. Using the rate of return on assets as the profit measure, we find that small business exposure tends to have neutral or positive effects on bank profitability after taking into account bank risk. Using efficient frontier analyses that focus on the rate of return on equity, we find that business …

Angel Investing: Changing Strategies During Volatile Times, Jeffrey E. Sohl
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Changing conditions in the angel market offer a unique opportunity to further knowledge and understanding about angel investing in the US during times of economic volatility. To identify trends in the angel market, this research examines changes in characteristics and investment behavior during a time of market expansion and contraction (2000 to 2001). While business angels remain the leading source of seed capital for business ventures, depressed yield rates and increased due diligence indicate that investors are retreating to more fundamental approaches.
