How Theory Meets Practice: An Analysis Of The Capital Structure Of Spanish Smes, Clara Cardone Riportella, Leonardo Cazorla Papis Dec 2006

How Theory Meets Practice: An Analysis Of The Capital Structure Of Spanish Smes, Clara Cardone Riportella, Leonardo Cazorla Papis

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The article analyzes the factors determining the capital structure of the Spanish small and medium enterprises [SMEs]. The analysis is grounded on the agency theory, the signalling approach and the pecking order theory. In particular, the article provides a qualitative and quantitative analysis about the impact of company brand, the ownership and control structure, and the relationship between the SMEs and their own financial policy. This analysis is based on defining the expected relationships that one might consider between the referred variables and the total debt ratio. In this regard, the analysis will be conducted by means of considering a …

The Qingdao Twin Registry: A Focus On Chronic Disease Research, C. Anderson Johnson, Zengchang Pang, Feng Ning, Jennifer B. Unger, Shaojie Wang, Qian Guo, Weihua Cao, Liming Lee

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

With the changing patterns of morbidity and mortality in China, noncommunicable chronic diseases have become the major threats to the health of the Chinese population. The causes of chronic diseases include genetic factors and behavioral risk factors such as the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, unhealthy dietary behaviors, and lack of physical activity. Twin studies offer a unique opportunity to disentangle the genetic and environmental risk and protective factors for chronic disease. The Qingdao Twin Registry (QTR) was initiated in 1998 as part of the National Chinese Twin Registry. Over 11,000 pairs of twins and multiples of all …

The theme of travel occupies an important place in African literature for two reasons. The earliest African writers wanted to substitute their own discourse for the one that had been produced by the West for centuries and which was long considered to be the sole legitimate discourse on Africa. By portraying African heroes and/or narrators who embarked on voyages to Africa or to Europe, African writers showed that the African too could be a traveler. The second reason is linked to generic considerations. Since the time of Don Quixote, the novel unfolds as an itinerary moving from one point to …

Review Of Black And Brown Faces In America's Wild Places, Charles Yaple Dec 2006

Review Of Black And Brown Faces In America's Wild Places, Charles Yaple

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Reading Black and Brown Faces... is a delightful, troublesome, and inspirational experience. Delightful, because it is a beautifully written and photographed (also expertly done by Edmondson) testimony from the lives of twenty Black people who overcame barriers that have historically inhibited their people from venturing into wild places. Because each chapter is their personal story, Edmondson wisely let each person share: why wild places are important to them in terms of childhood experiences, what they do in the outdoors, who were their heroes and mentors, their thoughts on minorities in wild places, beliefs about youth and wilderness, their best outdoor …

Oscillations Of Hyperbolic Systems With Functional Arguments, Yutaka Shoukaku, Norio Yoshida Dec 2006

Oscillations Of Hyperbolic Systems With Functional Arguments, Yutaka Shoukaku, Norio Yoshida

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Hyperbolic systems with functional arguments are studied, and sufficient conditions are obtained for every solution of boundary value problems to be weakly oscillatory (that is, at least one of its components is oscillatory) in a cylindrical domain. Robin-type boundary condition is considered. The approach used is to reduce the multi-dimensional oscillation problems to one-dimensional oscillation problems by using some integral means of solutions.

For Piecewise Smooth Signals, L1 Method Is The Best Among Lp: An Interval-Based Justification Of An Empirical Fact, Vladik Kreinovich, Arnold Neumaier

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Traditional engineering techniques use the Least Squares method (i.e., in mathematical terms, the l2-norm) to process data. It is known that in many practical situations, lp-methods with p=/=2 lead to better results. In different practical situations, different values of p are optimal. It is known that in several situations when we need to reconstruct a piecewise smooth signal, the empirically optimal value of p is close to 1. In this paper, we provide a new interval-based theoretical explanation for this empirical fact.

Home Management System: Application Development For Inventory Management, Lea Herr

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Societal trends have resulted in fuller schedules, and more dual income and single parent families. Time management has become more challenging for American families; therefore it has become more difficult to effectively and efficiently perform household management tasks. A computerized home management system would simplify, organize, and expedite home management processes. The goal of this project was the completion of the first module of a computerized home management system. Inventory management was chosen due to its critical part in home management. The application is characterized by a user interface designed to enable family members from kindergarten age and up to …

Clarification Of Basal Relationships In Rubus (Rosaceae) And The Origin Of Rubus Chamaemorus, Karen Michael Dec 2006

Clarification Of Basal Relationships In Rubus (Rosaceae) And The Origin Of Rubus Chamaemorus, Karen Michael

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Determination of phylogenetic relationships among ancestral species of Rubus has been elusive. Most Rubus species (including blackberries and raspberries), representing nine of the 12 subgenera, occur in a large, well supported clade named 'A' for reference). The remaining nine species are excluded from this group and represent three subgenera: subg. Anoplobatus (R. bartonianus, R. deliciosus, R. neomexicanus, R. odoratus, R. parviflorus, R. trilobus), subg. Chamaemorus (R. chamaemorus), and subg. Dalibarda (R. lasiococcus, R.pedatus). In addition, Rubus dalibarda L. is often treated in its own monotypic genus as Dalibarda repens L. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data from chloroplast regions and …

Hammer Strength Vs. Free Weights: Upper Body 1 Rm Comparisons, Matthew Thoma Dec 2006

Hammer Strength Vs. Free Weights: Upper Body 1 Rm Comparisons, Matthew Thoma

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Thirty-one trained male subjects performed one-repetition maximum lifts (IRM's) on three Hammer Strength Externally Loaded Machines and three comparable Free Weight Exercises. All tests were counterbalanced and randomly assigned. Subjects performed two 1RM tests during each lab session, with at least 48-72 hours of recovery between each. IRM's were recorded as the greatest amount of weight lifted with proper technique. 1RM data was used to (1) determine the relationship between 1RM performed on Hammer Strength machines versus Free Weights and (2) to develop regression equations that can accurately predict IRM's when switching from one exercise modality to another. Statistics revealed …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A novel sulfate-reducing bacterium was isolated from pristine sediments of Lake Stechlin, Germany. This strain, STP12 , was found to contain predominantly c-type cytochromes and to reduce sulfate, sulfite and thiosulfate using lactate as an electron donor. Although STP12 could not utilize elemental sulfur as an electron acceptor, it could support growth by dissimilatory Fe(III) reduction. In a comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences, STP12 was 96.7 % similar to Desulfosporosinus auripigmenti DSM 13351 , 96.5 % similar to Desulfosporosinus meridiei DSM 13257 and 96.4 % similar to Desulfosporosinus orientis DSM 765 . DNA-DNA hybridization experiments revealed that strain STP12 …

A Partially Discretized Age-Dependent Population Model With An Additional Stucture, Jean Tchuenche Dec 2006

A Partially Discretized Age-Dependent Population Model With An Additional Stucture, Jean Tchuenche

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A semi-discretization method for solving an age-dependent population dynamics model with an additional structure is proposed. This method, unlike previous ones, considers the partial discretization which reduces the model equation into a first order ordinary differential equation. The latter is then solved explicitly and conditions under which second order accuracy arises are given. While the approach adopted is basically analytical, the main result shows that the sum of errors is bounded. An extension to the non-trivial case where growth depends on the additional parameter leads to a Riccati equation, and the existence and
convergence of solutions are proved.

Evaluating A Line Source Irrigation System For Determining Water Requirements Of Herbaceous Perennials, Roger Kjelgren, Teresa Cerny-Koenig Dec 2006

Evaluating A Line Source Irrigation System For Determining Water Requirements Of Herbaceous Perennials, Roger Kjelgren, Teresa Cerny-Koenig

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

We investigated wind effects on the water distribution pattern of a line source irrigation system experimental design that creates a decreasing linear moisture gradient and the growth of twelve perennial wildflower species. Species were randomly assigned to rows perpendicular to a main line of spray irrigation heads, parallel to the decreasing irrigation rates, and irrigated at 110% of evapotranspiration at the heads. At low wind speed (0.44 m/s, 1.4 ft/s), application rates decreased linearly from 50 mm/hr (2 in/hr) for positions closest to the irrigation line to zero at 4 m (12 ft) from the irrigation line. Application rates at …

"Strangers In A Strange Land": Assessing The Experience Of Latter-Day Saint Expatriate Families, James A. Toronto

BYU Studies

The word expatriate is derived from Latin ex, meaning out, and patria, meaning fatherland. In a broad sense, an expatriate is defined as anyone living outside his or her native land. Prominent scriptural expatriates include Adam and Eve, Abraham, Moses, Lehi and his family, the Apostle Paul, and Moroni. In a sense, all of us are spiritual expatriates with plans and hopes of ultimately returning to our home of origin.

The Impact Of Initial Public Offerings On The External Growth Strategies Of Entrepreneurial Firms, Tobias Schmidt, Michael J. Dowling, Christian Lechner

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The goal of this paper is to examine the impact of Initial Public Offerings (IPO) on the investment strategies of young entrepreneurial firms. Hypotheses are developed from the finance, strategy and top management team literature. These are then tested using multivariate methods in order to study post-IPO investment behavior of a global sample of young Internet firms.

Ipo Firm Executives, Compensation, And Selling, Jaemin Kim, Kuntara Pukthuanthong Dec 2006

Ipo Firm Executives, Compensation, And Selling, Jaemin Kim, Kuntara Pukthuanthong

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

IPO firm executives are significant net sellers in the year immediately following the IPO year. Two significant variables affecting their sales are the number of stock options exercised during the year and the number of shares held at the end of the preceding year. Contrary to the findings of the previous studies, the number of stock options and the number of restricted stocks turn out to be insignificant. The evidence suggests that IPO executives sell mainly to realize a significant part of their undiversified wealth; however, they do not sell to explicitly hedge against stock option grants or to exploit …

Industry Effects And Banking Relationship As Determinants Of Small Firm Capital Structure Decisions, Timo P. Korkeamaki, Matthew W. Rutherford Dec 2006

Industry Effects And Banking Relationship As Determinants Of Small Firm Capital Structure Decisions, Timo P. Korkeamaki, Matthew W. Rutherford

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This work examines the leverage ratios of firms covered by the 1998 SSBF Survey. We find that small firms in general are significantly more levered than their larger counterparts in an industry-matched Compustat sample, but the difference is at least partially explained by differences in industry distributions of the two samples. Our regression results provide some interesting contrasts to previous studies. In examining the effects of relationship banking on deviations from industry leverage norms, we find that a close banking relationship is related to a lower leverage, even after controlling for industry medians, and also that firms with a closer …

Use Of Debt Covenants In Small Firms, Chenchuramaiah T. Bathala, Oswald D. Bowlin, William P. Dukes Dec 2006

Use Of Debt Covenants In Small Firms, Chenchuramaiah T. Bathala, Oswald D. Bowlin, William P. Dukes

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper examines the structure of debt covenants in small firms, with emphasis on privately owned firms. It is based on a survey of a large sample of firms drawn from the S&P Register of Corporations. The findings show that debt covenants imposed on small firms differ according to the firm type (privately owned or publicly owned), debt level, the borrowing cost, and the source of financing (bank or other sources). The evidence is generally consistent with the arguments relating to stockholder-bondholder agency cost conflicts and the Costly Contracting Hypothesis of Smith and Warner (1979).
