Privilege Through Prayer: Examining Bible-Based Prison Rehabilitation Programs Under The Establishment Clause, Nathaniel J. Odle Dec 2006

Privilege Through Prayer: Examining Bible-Based Prison Rehabilitation Programs Under The Establishment Clause, Nathaniel J. Odle

ExpressO

In early June of 2006, an Iowa federal judge found a publicly-funded prison ministry to be in violation of the Establishment Clause and ordered it stopped. The program in question, the InnerChange Freedom Initiative, conceived and maintained by Prison Fellowship Ministries, utilized an overtly Christian model to rehabilitate inmates through spiritual and moral regeneration. In the eyes of the court, the failure of the state of Iowa to provide a reasonable secular alternative had the primary effect of advancing religion and fostered excessive governmental entanglement under a traditional Lemon analysis. Equally important in the court’s decision was the lack of …

Influence Of Ph And Heat Treatment Of Whey On The Functional Properties Of Whey Protein Concentrates In Yoghurt, Isabelle Sodini, Jerry Mattas, Phillip S. Tong Dec 2006

Influence Of Ph And Heat Treatment Of Whey On The Functional Properties Of Whey Protein Concentrates In Yoghurt, Isabelle Sodini, Jerry Mattas, Phillip S. Tong

Dairy Science

Our aim was to investigate how two conditions of whey processing, pH and heat treatment, affect the physical properties of stirred yoghurts fortified to 45 g protein kg−1 with whey protein concentrates (WPC). Cheddar whey was heated at pH 6.4 or pH 5.8 at 72 °C for 15 s, eventually heated further at 82 or 88 °C for 78 s, ultrafiltered, and spray dried. Resulting WPC contained 38% protein; the denaturation level of the whey protein was 10–53%. There were significant (P

Piscicidal Plants Of Nepal: Checklist, Ethnobotanical Uses And Indigenous Practices, Ananda R. Joshi, Kunjani Joshi Dec 2006

Piscicidal Plants Of Nepal: Checklist, Ethnobotanical Uses And Indigenous Practices, Ananda R. Joshi, Kunjani Joshi

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Fish catching with the aid of plants and their parts is an ancient practice. The rural communities of Nepal collect piscicidal plants and their parts from various habitats, such as forest, scrub, grassland, cultivated fields, wetlands and riverbanks and use them following traditional methods and practices to stupefy fish. However, at present, the piscicidal plants and their ethenobotanical information are being eroded as a result of haphazard exploitation of resources, habitat destruction and land use change (Joshi and Joshi, 2005). The loss of traditional knowledge within cultures undergoing rapid change is just as irreversiable as the loss of species (Joshi …

Tightening The Bounds On Feasible Preemption Points, Harini Ramaprasad Dec 2006

Tightening The Bounds On Feasible Preemption Points, Harini Ramaprasad

Conference Proceedings

Caches have become invaluable for higher-end architectures to hide, in part, the increasing gap between processor speed and memory access times. While the effect of caches on timing predictability of single real-time tasks has been the focus of much research, bounding the overhead of cache warm-ups after preemptions remains a challenging problem, particularly for data caches. This paper makes multiple contributions. 1) We bound the penalty of cache interference for real-time tasks by providing accurate predictions of data cache behavior across preemptions, including instruction cache and pipeline effects. We show that, when considering cache preemption, the critical instant does not …

An Overview Of The Near-Death Experience Phenomenon, David San Filippo Ph.D. Dec 2006

An Overview Of The Near-Death Experience Phenomenon, David San Filippo Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

Near-death experiences appear to be universal phenomena that have been reported for centuries. A near-death encounter is defined as an event in which the individual could very easily die or be killed, or may have already been considered clinically dead, but nonetheless survives, and continue his or her physical life. Reports of near-death experiences date back to the Ice Age. There are cave paintings, in France and Spain that depict possible after life scenes that are similar to reported scenes related to near-death experiences. Plato's Republic presents the story of a near-death experience of a Greek soldier named Er. In …

Religion And Subjective Well-Being Among China’S Elderly Population, Philip H. Brown, Brian Tierney Dec 2006

Religion And Subjective Well-Being Among China’S Elderly Population, Philip H. Brown, Brian Tierney

Working Papers in Economics

Evidence from developed and developing countries alike demonstrates a strongly positive relationship between religiosity and happiness, particularly for women and particularly among the elderly. Using survey data from the oldest old in China, we find a strong negative relationship between religious participation and subjective well-being in a rich multivariate logistic framework that controls for demographics, health and disabilities, living arrangements and marital status, wealth and income, lifestyle and social networks, and location. In contrast to other studies, we also find that religion has a larger effect on subjective well-being on men than women.

Efficient Domination In Knights Graphs, Anne Sinko, Peter J. Slater Dec 2006

Efficient Domination In Knights Graphs, Anne Sinko, Peter J. Slater

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The influence of a vertex set S ⊆V(G) is I(S) = Σv∈S(1 + deg(v)) = Σv∈S |N[v]|, which is the total amount of domination done by the vertices in S. The efficient domination number F(G) of a graph G is equal to the maximum influence of a packing, that is, F(G) is the maximum number of vertices one can dominate under the restriction that no vertex gets dominated more than once.

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

We present new observations leading to an improved black hole mass estimate for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 as part of a reverberation-mapping campaign conducted at the MDM Observatory. Cross-correlation analysis of the Hβ emission-line light curve with the optical continuum light curve reveals an emission-line time delay of τcent=3.73+/-0.75 days. By combining this time delay with the Hβ line width, we derive a central black hole mass of MBH=(9.8+/-2.1)×106 Msolar, an improvement in precision of a factor of several over past results.

Gamma Shape Mixtures For Heavy-Tailed Distributions, Sergio Venturini, Francesca Dominici, Giovanni Parmigiani Dec 2006

Gamma Shape Mixtures For Heavy-Tailed Distributions, Sergio Venturini, Francesca Dominici, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

An important question in health services research is the estimation of the proportion of medical expenditures that exceed a given threshold. Typically, medical expenditures present highly skewed, heavy tailed distributions, for which a) simple variable transformations are insufficient to achieve a tractable low- dimensional parametric form and b) nonparametric methods are not efficient in estimating exceedance probabilities for large thresholds. Motivated by this context, in this paper we propose a general Bayesian approach for the estimation of tail probabilities of heavy-tailed distributions, based on a mixture of gamma distributions in which the mixing occurs over the shape parameter. This family provides …

Misogyny, Androgyny And Sexual Harassment: Sex Discrimination In A Gender-Deconstructed World, Meredith Render Dec 2006

Misogyny, Androgyny And Sexual Harassment: Sex Discrimination In A Gender-Deconstructed World, Meredith Render

Faculty Scholarship

Understanding sexual harassment as a form of discrimination “because of sex” has grown increasingly difficult as our understandings of both gender and sex have grown richer and more complex. This piece offers a new descriptive model for understanding gender bias in the context of sexual harassment law. The piece argues that two separate sets of ideas about gender have intersected to produce a new picture of gender “equality”: one that is separated from a binary model of men and women, but that nonetheless continues to disadvantage women as compared to men. The paper refers to this idea as the androcentric-assimilation …

What's Ahead For 2007? Knowledge@Wharton Network Surveys The Globe, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

On the financial front, 2006 has been a pretty good year all around. Stock markets in many countries have rallied, energy prices have fallen, inflation is relatively low and growth in GDP ranges from respectable to robust. But the economies of most countries also face a number of threats -- some predictable, some not -- that could derail recent gains in our increasingly connected global markets. What's ahead for 2007 in the U.S., India, Europe, Latin America, China and other parts of the world? We offer a roundup of reports from the Knowledge@Wharton Network, including India Knowledge@Wharton, Universia Knowledge@Wharton and …
