Xbrl In The Accounting Curriculum: A Survey Of Ais Faculty, Ashutosh Deshmukh, Khondkar Karim, Jeffrey Romine, Robert W. Rutledge

Articles

The purpose of this paper is to assess the challenges and opportunities associated with introducing XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) into the accounting curricula. XBRL is an electronic format for simplifying the flow of financial information between software programs. It is a complex, rapidly changing language that is multi-disciplinary in nature. This poses difficult pedagogical questions. The primary question is whether XBRL should be covered in the curriculum or not. If answered affirmatively, the issues related to which topics should be covered and to what extent become pertinent. The concurrent problems of faculty preparation and availability of instructional materials also …

Xbrl: Origins, Implementation And Acceptance, Phillip Kloeden

Articles

A brief overview of the origins of modern accounting are examined with it’s genesis in the Italian Renaissance. During this time period, trade and commerce expanded and new methods for tracking and recording transactions became necessary. Double entry bookkeeping was first documented by Luca Pacioli in 1458. Innovative Italian merchants and scholars of this time period have become known as the fathers of modern accounting. eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) is currently the revolutionizing concept in the modern accounting world. Originally, known as Extensible Financial Reporting Markup Language (XFRML) in 1998, it was a prototype language created by the early …

A Retrospective, Descriptive Study Of Shoulder Outcomes In Outpatient Physical Therapy, A. Lynn Millar, Philip A. Jasheway, Wendy Eaton, Frances Christensen

Faculty Publications

Study Design: A retrospective, descriptive study of clients with shoulder dysfunction referred to physical therapy. Objectives: To (1) describe the clinical and functional outcomes of clients with shoulder dysfunction following outpatient physical therapy, and (2) to compare the outcomes by type of shoulder dysfunction. Background: Although individuals with shoulder dysfunction are commonly referred to physical therapy, few large descriptive studies regarding outcomes following physical therapy are available. Methods and Measures: Data for 878 clients (468 female, 410 male) were retrieved and analyzed. This database was developed between 1997 and 2000 and included 4 outpatient facilities from 1 healthcare system in …

Structure Of Late Variscan Millevaches Leucogranite Massif In The French Massif Central: Ams And Gravity Modelling Results, A Gébelin, G Martelet, Y Chen, M Brunel, M Faure

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In the Limousin area, Variscan leucogranitic plutons are spatially associated with normal faults and major strike-slip shear zones that are a continuation of the South Armorican shear zone. Our study focuses on the large N-S-trending Millevaches granitic massif (Massif Central, France), and intends to highlight, through gravity modelling, structural and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), the massif structure at depth and to discuss the mode of emplacement of granites within a strike-slip tectonic context. The mica subfabric suggests that the magnetic foliations display a general NW-SE sub-horizontal pattern on both sides of the N-S Pradines dextral wrench fault zone that …

An Environmental Pool For The Rio Grande, Kara Gillon Jan 2006

An Environmental Pool For The Rio Grande, Kara Gillon

Publications

The Bureau of Reclamation and Corps of Engineers operate a series of dams, reservoirs, and levees along the Middle Rio Grande of New Mexico. The plight of the Rio Grande silvery minnow, an endangered species, and of the river itself demonstrates the need for a change from the emphasis on water development to sustainable river management. Conservation groups invoked the protections of the Endangered Species Act to catalyze this change. Recognizing that flexibility is necessary to meeting competing water needs, the groups also promoted the need for and several approaches to a sustainable and long-term approach to river management and …

New Model, New Strategies: Instructional Design For Building Online Wisdom Communities, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Ludmila Ortegano-Layne, Kayleigh Carabajal, Casey Frechette, Ken Lindemann, Barbara Jennings

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We discuss the development of an instructional design model, WisCom (Wisdom Communities), based on socio-constructivist and socio-cultural learning philosophies and distance education principles for the development of online wisdom communities, and the application and evaluation of the model in an online graduate course in the U.S. The WisCom model aims to facilitate transformational learning by fostering the development of a wisdom community, knowledge innovation and mentoring and learner support in an online learning environment, based on a “Cycle of Inquiry” module design, and a “Spiral of Inquiry” program design. Extending beyond current instructional design practice, WisCom provides both a new …

Mad Women And Desperate Girls: Infanticide And Child Murder In Law And Myth, Elizabeth Rapaport Jan 2006

Mad Women And Desperate Girls: Infanticide And Child Murder In Law And Myth, Elizabeth Rapaport

Faculty Scholarship

This article first offers a comparison between the stereotype dominated understanding of infanticide and child homicide in the United States and the statistical landscape it obscures. It then turns to the history of the crime of infanticide, a history which confirms that a fascination with deviant women as long dominated the story of infanticide. The article concludes with the exploration of the "Good Mother Defense." That exploration reveals the extent to which the fate of a woman tried for child homicide hinges on whether the jury sees her as a good mother, rather than on the prosecutors' ability to prove …

The Immorality And Inefficiency Of An Efficient Breach, Dawinder S. Sidhu Jan 2006

The Immorality And Inefficiency Of An Efficient Breach, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

This Article attempts to analyze a concept in contract law known as the doctrine of efficient breach, which “compels [or at least encourages or invites] a party to a contract to breach if they can compensate the other party and remain better off than if they had fully performed the contract.”2 This doctrine appears to encourage immoral conduct, namely the breach of a contract. However, in the name of economic efficiency, wealth maximization, and social wealth, several prominent legal scholars, including Judge Richard A. Posner, the “leader of the school of Law and Economics movement,”3 have argued that an efficient …

The Future Of Student Grouping Systems In Science 14-16., Stephen Rowcliffe Jan 2006

The Future Of Student Grouping Systems In Science 14-16., Stephen Rowcliffe

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Ability grouping is a contentious issue in high school science education, and one that divides teachers, parents, and policymakers alike. However, it may be that current grouping systems are founded on ideasthat are failing to provide for the best interests of students at any ability level. This article aims to reviewcurrent practice and its effects on student and teacher outcomes, and suggest a new direction for studentgrouping polices based on the ideal of “science for all” through curriculum reform and choice-basedmodular course systems. The article is based largely on the British education system.

Screening For Cystic Fibrosis: The Importance Of Using The Correct Tools, Uzma Shah, Tariq Moatter Jan 2006

Screening For Cystic Fibrosis: The Importance Of Using The Correct Tools, Uzma Shah, Tariq Moatter

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a potentially lethal genetic disorder. The most frequent mutation worldwide in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene is designated as the Delta F508 mutation. This mutation was found in only 33% of Pakistani patients studied. Since the common Pakistani mutations remain to be identified, appropriate screening tools are required to identify disease. Sweat chloride determinations remain the gold standard for diagnosing CF. This study was done to emphasize the importance of using the correct tests.
Methods: The study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital. The CFTR delta F508 mutation was tested …
