Mapping The Road From Childhood Trauma To Adult Somatization: The Role Of Attachment, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz, Arthur J. Barsky, David K. Ahern

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Objective: This study tested whether insecure attachment mediates the link between childhood trauma and adult somatization. Methods: A community sample of 101 couples completed self-report measures including the Relationship Scales Questionnaire, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Somatic Symptom Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Conflict Tactics Scale. Results: Childhood trauma was associated with higher levels of somatization and insecure attachment. Insecure attachment style was also associated with higher levels of somatization. Controlling for age, income, and recent intimate partner violence, analyses showed that fearful attachment fully mediated the link between childhood trauma and somatization for women. …

Linking Hearts And Minds In Couple Interactions: Intentions, Attributions And Overriding Sentiments, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz Jan 2006

Linking Hearts And Minds In Couple Interactions: Intentions, Attributions And Overriding Sentiments, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This study examined the role of emotion and relationship satisfaction in shaping attributions about a partner’s intentions in couple interactions. Using video recall, participants (n=156 couples) reported on their own and their partners’ intentions and emotions during affective moments of a discussion about an upsetting event. Links were found between relationship satisfaction and factor-analytically derived intention and attribution scales. Attributions about a partner’s intentions were weakly to moderately correlated with the partner’s self-reported intentions. Relationship satisfaction accounted for part of the discrepancy between self-reported intentions and partner attributions. Emotions mediated the links between relationship satisfaction and attributions, suggesting …

Smart Growth: A Buffer Zone Between Decentrist And Centrist Theory?, Dorothy Stewart, Lorcan Sirr, Ruth Kelly Jan 2006

Smart Growth: A Buffer Zone Between Decentrist And Centrist Theory?, Dorothy Stewart, Lorcan Sirr, Ruth Kelly

Articles

The context for planning at the turn of the 19th century, in a newly industrialized world, was based on the need to find solutions to overcrowding and dire urban conditions. Planning decisions made in the post-World War II period were primarily motivated by the desire to reconstruct war torn cities. The forces of influence for planning and development in modern advanced capitalist societies are arguably set within the context of sustainable development. Many developed countries have witnessed a dramatic change in their territorial structures. Urban centres are extending into rural areas and surrounding hinterland, where large tracts of land are …

The Movement For Open Access Law, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2006

The Movement For Open Access Law, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

My claim in this contribution to this important symposium is that the law and legal scholarship should be freely available on the Internet, and copyright law and licensing should facilitate achievement of this goal. This claim reflects the combined aims of those who support the movement for open access law. This nascent movement is a natural extension of the well-developed movement for free access to primary legal materials and the equally well-developed open access movement, which seeks to make all scholarly journal articles freely available on the Internet. Legal scholars have only general familiarity with the first movement and very …

Iowa Physical Educators’ Access To Usage Of, And Perceived Importance Of Technology In The Field Of Physical Education, Jennifer Hadler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of Iowa physical education teachers regarding the importance of various technologies available for use in a physical education classroom. A second purpose was to determine the access to and usage of selected pieces of technology. Data were compared based on years of teaching experience and gender. A questionnaire was sent to Iowa physical educators to determine access and use of 20 different pieces of technology. Teachers also ranked the importance of each technology as "Important," "Somewhat Important," or "Not Important." Results of the study indicated the most accessible technologies …

Rethinking Prison Sex: Self Expression And Safety, Brenda V. Smith Jan 2006

Rethinking Prison Sex: Self Expression And Safety, Brenda V. Smith

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article analyzes legislation and policies that limit prisoners' sexual expression and autonomy. The article juxtaposes prisoners interest in sexual expression against the interests of the state in regulating sex by and between prisoners. The article concludes that the state has an interest in regulating sex between inmates and staff and in regulating coerced or forced sex between inmates. In other instances prisons could accommodate prisoners' interest in sexual expression and achieve important goals such as better decisionmaking; improved relations with family and partners to aid community reentry; reduction of prison rape; and as inmate management.

A Critical Appraisal Of The Roles Of Public Sector Employees In The Provision Of Educational Buildings Under A Public Private Partnership (Ppp) In The Republic Of Ireland, Louis Gunnigan, David Eaton

Conference papers

Public-Private Partnership (PPP) has now become established as a key element in the Irish Government’s strategy in the provision of school buildings. Specific guidelines have been implemented to define the public sector role in a PPP in Ireland and these guidelines represent a significant change in role from those in the traditional schools procurement process. Through a literature review, this paper maps the PPP process and establishes the new tasks that public sector employees must carry out in the adoption of PPP. The new knowledge, skills and competence (KSC) required to carry out these tasks are noted. Whilst existing literature …

Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum is a school-based program developed to reduce and prevent aggressive behavior. Three separate age-appropriate curricula are available for preschool through middle school classrooms (preschool/kindergarten level, elementary level, and middle school/junior high level). The curricula are designed to be teacher-friendly and convenient for classroom use. Their primary purpose is to decrease children's aggressive behaviors by helping children develop habits of prosocial behavior and thought. The curricula employ evidence-based strategies that are built on a broad and solid foundation of research. Each of the three curricula have been evaluated and found to reduce aggression and increase …

Transnational Criminal Law And Procedure: An Introduction, Sadiq Reza Jan 2006

Transnational Criminal Law And Procedure: An Introduction, Sadiq Reza

Articles & Chapters

This preface to papers from the criminal law and procedure panels of the AALS Workshop on Integrating Transnational Legal Perspectives Into the First-Year Curriculum, which took place in Washington D.C. in January 2006, suggests a typology of transnational criminal matters - namely, matters of foreign criminal law or procedure, comparative criminal law or procedure, international criminal law or procedure, and extraterritorial aspects of domestic criminal law or procedure - and points readers to other publications on teaching transnational criminal matters in law school. The piece thus introduces the reader not only to the papers from the workshop but to teaching …

Some Middle-Age Spread, A Few Mood Swings, And Growing Exhaustion: The Human Rights Movement At Middle Age, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

This paper was presented at a symposium, "The Scholar as Activist", dedicated to the work of Nadine Strossen, President of the ACLU. This paper focuses on the subject of international human rights law and the engagement of scholars as activists in this area of law. At fifty-plus years, and therefore soundly middle aged, the global human rights project today provides occasion for reflection and evaluation. This paper observes that human rights have increasingly become the language of progressive politics. In many ways, this focus on human rights globally echoes the struggle for civil liberties and civil rights in the United …

How Should We Assess Interviewing And Counseling Skills, Lawrence Grosberg Jan 2006

How Should We Assess Interviewing And Counseling Skills, Lawrence Grosberg

Articles & Chapters

This paper discusses the various ways in which interviewing and counseling skills may be assessed. It proceeds on the assumption that such skills are integral to competent lawyering and that they ought to be taught and evaluated in law school. After briefly describing the American legal context in which these skills might be taught, the paper begins with a discussion of One-on-One Teacher Feedback. This method might be used for learning purposes or for grading purposes or both. In either case, there should be criteria distributed with notice to the students. While this has been the preferred method among law …

The Authoritative Moment: Exploring The Boundaries Of Interpretation In The Recognition Of Queer Families, Kris Franklin Jan 2006

The Authoritative Moment: Exploring The Boundaries Of Interpretation In The Recognition Of Queer Families, Kris Franklin

Articles & Chapters

This article examines the boundaries of judicial interpretation as courts struggle to define the families formed by lesbians, gay men and transexuals. It compares the jurisprudence of numerous state courts examining queer families in different contexts. The article identifies three interwoven components of judicial reasoning: "lex" reasoning, grounded in the jurisdiction's binding and persuasive law; factual reasoning in which the courts must categorize queer families as analogous to those the law already recognizes or instead as something quite new and distinct; and finally methodological reasoning, in which courts self-consciously examine the boundaries of their own interpretive authority. Showing that in …

The 2004-2005 Amendments To The Community Reinvestment Act Regulations: For Communities One Step Forward And Three Steps Back, Richard D. Marsico Jan 2006

The 2004-2005 Amendments To The Community Reinvestment Act Regulations: For Communities One Step Forward And Three Steps Back, Richard D. Marsico

Articles & Chapters

In 2001, the four federal banking agencies that enforce the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) began a review of CRA regulations they adopted in 1995. The review lasted until they issued amendments in 2004 and 2005. The review process was controversial, tortuous, and divisive. By the time it was over, residents of the communities the CRA was intended to benefit, including low- and moderate-income and predominantly minority neighborhoods, gained a victory in their efforts to promote community reinvestment and economic development, but also lost significant ground. The victory was strengthened regulation of subprime and predatory lending. The losses included a reduction …

Courtroom Applications Of Virtual Environments, Immersive Virtual Environments, And Collaborative Virtual Environments., Jeremy Bailenson, Jim Blascovich, Andrew Beall, Beth Simone Noveck

Articles & Chapters

This article examines the possibilities and implications of employing virtual environments (VEs), immersive virtual environments (IVEs), and collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) in the courtroom. We argue that the immersive and interactive reality created by these tools adds significant value as a simulation of experience to enhance courtroom practice. The obvious boundaries between real and virtual enhance the attractiveness of these tools as technologies of rhetorical persuasion that can be used to demonstrate subjective perspective, strengthen or impeach the credibility of witnesses, and provide the trier of fact with a better understanding of each side's perception of the facts at issue. …
