Bright Contrast Imaging Of Carbon Nanofiber-Substrate Interface, Makoto Suzuki, Hirohiko Kitsuki, Quoc Ngo, Cary Y. Yang Nov 2006

Bright Contrast Imaging Of Carbon Nanofiber-Substrate Interface, Makoto Suzuki, Hirohiko Kitsuki, Quoc Ngo, Cary Y. Yang

Electrical and Computer Engineering

We present the contrast mechanisms of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for visualizing the interface between carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and the underlying substrate. SEM imaging with electron beam energies higher than a certain threshold provides different image contrasts depending on whether CNFs are in contact with the substrate or suspended above the substrate. CNFs with diameters ranging from 25to250nm are examined with various electron beam energies. It is found that the threshold energy corresponds to the energy required to penetrate the CNF and its dependence on CNF diameter can be understood using the theory of electron range. This knowledge will be …

Teilhard And The Future Of Humanity, Thierry Meynard, S.J. Nov 2006

Teilhard And The Future Of Humanity, Thierry Meynard, S.J.

Religion

Fifty years after his death, the thought of the French scientist and Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955) continues to inspire new ways of understanding humanity’s future. Trained as a paleontologist and philosopher, Teilhard was an innovative synthesizer of science and religion, developing an idea of evolution as an unfolding of material and mental worlds into an integrated, holistic universe at what he called the Omega Point. His books, such as the bestselling The Phenomenon of Man, have influenced generations of ecologists, environmentalists, planners, and others concerned with the fate of the earth.

This book brings together original essays …

Nclb Technology And A Rural School: A Case Study, Theresa A. Cullen, Thomas A. Brush, Timothy J. Frey, Rebecca S. Hinshaw, Scott J. Warren

Faculty Publications - Curriculum & Instruction

The requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) have presented special challenges and opportunities for rural schools (Reeves, 2003). Researchers have suggested that one way rural schools may be able to overcome these challenges is through an increase in the level of technology integration in their school (Collins & Dewees, 2001). This case study reports on one school’s attempt to use grant resources funded through NCLB to integrate specific instructional technologies to facilitate increased student achievement. Through interviews and observations, the roles, attitudes, and difficulties of teachers and administrators in implementing a technology initiative in a …

Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Upregulation Of Hypoxia-Inducible Genes In Endothelial Cells To Create Artificial Vasculature, Robert Schonberger Nov 2006

Upregulation Of Hypoxia-Inducible Genes In Endothelial Cells To Create Artificial Vasculature, Robert Schonberger

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study explored the possibility that upregulation of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1 (Hif-1)-responsive genes in Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) would promote and stabilize HUVEC formation into inchoate vascular beds within artificial collagen gels. This experiment was designed to explore the above possibility by sub-cloning Hif-1α, the related chimeric construct Hif-1α/VP16, and the marker gene dsRed into retroviral expression vectors, producing retroviral vectors containing these genes, and stably transducing HUVEC using these retroviruses. Transduced HUVEC were to be observed in cell culture as well as after implantation into artificial collagen gels that have previously supported vascular bed formation by HUVEC. …

Willa Cather: Male Roles And Self-Definition In My Antonia, The Professor's House, And "Neighbor Rosicky", Kristina Anne Everton

Theses and Dissertations

Gender roles are a tool used by society to set acceptable boundaries and ideals upon the sexes, and during the early part of the twentieth century in America those gender boundaries began to blur. As a result of the 19th Amendment, men must have felt their decreasing importance because women were no longer solely dependent upon them, and gender roles shifted as woman began to occupy territory that was traditionally held by men. The “New Woman" entered the workforce, and refused to accept traditional female gender conventions. In response to the “New Woman," Theodore Roosevelt and other leading males sought …

Large, Single Institution Review Of Prognostic Factors In Oligodendroglioma, Heather Mckee Nov 2006

Large, Single Institution Review Of Prognostic Factors In Oligodendroglioma, Heather Mckee

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Studies have demonstrated an association between loss of heterozygosity on chromosome 1p and chromosome 19q in oligodendrogliomas with both chemosensitivity and prolonged survival. This represents the first time genetic mutations have been utilized to guide clinical decision making. Studies have also found these genetic mutations to be associated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features including indistinct tumor borders on T1-weighted imaging, susceptibility effect, and mixed signal intensity. However, no study has yet demonstrated an association between imaging features and survival. We seek to confirm the clinical utility of known prognostic factors such as age and tumor grade while investigating the …

Overcoming Barriers To Enrolling Minorities In Medical Research: What Does The Evidence Say?, Stacy Uybico

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Despite the pervasive underrepresentation of minorities in health research studies, little is known about strategies that aim to increase minority enrollment in research. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify whether elder African American and Latinos were more likely to refuse research participation, identify tangible and specific incentives to improve research participation in this population, and to review the successes and data reporting of recruitment interventions attempted on diverse populations at large, including the non-elderly. Methods: We conducted a review of Yale OAIC studies to determine minority vs. non-minority research enrollment rates, interviewed key informants about likely …

Small Interfering Rna Decreases Vegf Mrna Expression And Proliferation Of Colorectal Cancer Cells, Stephen Ward Nov 2006

Small Interfering Rna Decreases Vegf Mrna Expression And Proliferation Of Colorectal Cancer Cells, Stephen Ward

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A) was first described in 1989 for its angiogenic and mitogenic properties. Early studies indicated that VEGF-A acts primarily in a paracrine pathway which is limited to vascular endothelium. Further investigation showed that VEGF-A and VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) are expressed by many solid tumors and improve cell growth and survival. Therefore, VEGF-A may act via an autocrine pathway that effects tumor cellular proliferation by binding VEGFR-2 at the cell surface. This study utilizes small interfering RNA (siRNA) technology to investigate the presence of an autocrine loop in human RKO colorectal cancer cells. RT-PCR demonstrated the expression …

The sex pheromone of the scarab beetle, Phyllophaga anxia, is a blend of the methyl esters of two amino acids, L-valine and L-isoleucine. A field trapping study was conducted, deploying different blends of the two compounds at 59 locations in the United States and Canada. More than 57,000 males of 61 Phyllophaga species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) were captured and identified. Three major findings included: (1) widespread use of the two compounds [of the 147 Phyllophaga (sensu stricto) species found in the United States and Canada, males of nearly 40% were captured]; (2) in most species intraspecific male response to the …

Anti-Capsular Antibodies Activate Killing Of Escherichia Coli O8:K87 By The Alternate Complement Pathway In Porcine Serum, N. M. Clark, E. M. Berberov, M. Wang, Rodney A. Moxley Nov 2006

Anti-Capsular Antibodies Activate Killing Of Escherichia Coli O8:K87 By The Alternate Complement Pathway In Porcine Serum, N. M. Clark, E. M. Berberov, M. Wang, Rodney A. Moxley

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains that produce K88 (F4) + fimbria are important causes of diarrhea and post-diarrheal septicemia in swine. ETEC O8:K87, a serotype represented by a number of these strains, is typically serum resistant. Strain-specific antibodies are known to activate alternative C pathway-mediated killing of other serum-resistant E. coli [Hill, A.W., Shears, A.L., Hibbitt, K.G., 1978. The requirement of specific antibody for the killing of E. coli by the alternate complement pathway in bovine serum. Immunology 34, 131–136], but their antigenic targets have not been determined. We tested the hypothesis that anti-K87 antibodies activate alternative pathway-mediated killing of …

Multiple Domains In Siz Sumo Ligases Contribute To Substrate Selectivity., Alison Reindle, Irina Belichenko, Gwendolyn R Bylebyl, Xiaole L Chen, Nishant Gandhi, Erica S Johnson

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Saccharomyces cerevisiae contains two Siz/PIAS SUMO E3 ligases, Siz1 and Siz2/Nfi1, and one other known ligase, Mms21. Although ubiquitin ligases are highly substrate-specific, the degree to which SUMO ligases target distinct sets of substrates is unknown. Here we show that although Siz1 and Siz2 each have unique substrates in vivo, sumoylation of many substrates can be stimulated by either protein. Furthermore, in the absence of both Siz proteins, many of the same substrates are still sumoylated at low levels. Some of this residual sumoylation depends on MMS21. Siz1 targets its unique substrates through at least two distinct domains. Sumoylation of …

Uterine Arterial Embolization: Classification Of Leiomyomas To Determine Predictors Of Response, Trusher Patel

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study is to determine features of uterine leiomyoma on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that identify predictors of response to Uterine Arterial Embolization (UAE). MRI images were obtained before and after UAE in 35 women. These images were analyzed for uterine and fibroid size changes along with fibroid border characteristics and location for a total of 73 fibroids. Fibroids were classified as either smooth or lobulated based on border appearance on MR imaging to determine any differences in mean fibroid volume reduction post-embolization. The mean decrease in fibroid volume from pre-embolization to post-embolization was 48.1% ± 28.6 …
