A Template-Based Data Specification Framework For Modeling Physical Security Systems, Ashu Guru, Paul Savory Jan 2006

A Template-Based Data Specification Framework For Modeling Physical Security Systems, Ashu Guru, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Simulation studies often fail to provide any useful results due to its success being highly dependent on the skills of the analyst to understand a system and then correctly identify all the required data parameters and dependent variables. This paper describes a template-based framework to help identify and specify the components and data parameters for developing models of physical security systems. The layered framework consists of fifteen templates built on top of fourteen data primitives representing 119 data parameters. The modeling framework has been programmed as an internet-based web application and is simulation language independent. The usefulness of the framework …

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Aims.Several experiments have reported observations on possible correlations between the flux of high energy muons and intense solar flares. If confirmed, these observations would have significant implications for acceleration processes in the heliosphere able to accelerate protons and other ions to energies of at least tens of GeV. Methods. The solar flare of the 14 of July 2000 offered a unique opportunity for the L3+C experiment to search for a correlated enhancement in the flux of muons using the L3 precision muon spectrometer. Its capabilities for observing a directional excess in the flux of muons above 15 GeV (corresponding to primary …

Origin Of Heavy Ions In Upstream Events Near The Earth's Bow Shock, Mihir I. Desai, Glenn M. Mason, Joseph E. Mazur, Joseph R. Dwyer

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We have surveyed the ∼20-160 keV/nucleon heavy ion composition of 2102 upstream events observed by the Wind/STEP instrument near the Earth's bow shock over a complete solar cycle from day 325, 1994 through day 90, 2006. Our main results are: (1) During solar minimum conditions, both the C/O and Fe/O ratios are similar to the corresponding values measured in the solar wind and/or CIRs. (2) During solar maximum conditions, the C/O ratio is similar to that measured in SEP and CME-driven IP shock events, while the Fe/O ratio lies between the values measured in IP shock and SEP events. We …

Problem Based Learning, Susan Tebbe Jan 2006

Problem Based Learning, Susan Tebbe

Graduate Research Papers

The No Child Left Behind legislation brought about a flurry of conversations regarding student achievement (McElroy, 2006). Increased use of standardized testing to measure student achievement has resulted in a discussion of teaching models. Is the transmission teaching model with its expository style the only mode to insure student success? Or is the constructivist teaching model with its inquiry style a mode that better leads to student success? This review of literature examines the instructional practices involved in problem based learning, a constructivist approach. The paper focuses on the components of problem-based learning, the benefits and challenges of using this.approach, …

Teacher Autonomy : A Review Of The Research Literature, Jaime A. Usma-Wilches Jan 2006

Teacher Autonomy : A Review Of The Research Literature, Jaime A. Usma-Wilches

Graduate Research Papers

This paper reviews conceptual and empirical research on teacher autonomy in the context of school reform across countries. Research shows that teacher autonomy can be conceptualized as a personal sense of freedom from interference or in terms of teachers' exercise of control in four different school domains: Teaching and assessment, curriculum development, school functioning, and professional development. Research also confirms that teachers' autonomy for decision making is shaped by a number of personal and contextual factors, and that teachers' directed professional development experiences may enhance their autonomy. This review clarifies the meaning of teacher autonomy and other related terms, and …

The Impact Of Open Source On Preinvention Assignment Contracts, Michael Mattioli

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This comment studies the implications of open source on pre-invention assignment agreements. Part I analyzes the basis for past enforcement of these contracts, with an eye toward distinctions between open source projects and more traditional commercial endeavors. Part II briefly reviews the history of patents and explores constitutional and contract-based arguments against the pre-invention assignment. Part III begins with a discussion of open source and then explores how this new phenomenon perfectly fulfills the goals behind the Patent Act. With these addressed, the central inquiry of pre-invention assignment agreements, as they could conflict with open source inventions, will be addressed. …

Which Place, What Story?: Cultural Discourses At The Border Of The Blackfeet Reservation And Glacier National Park, Donal Carbaugh, Lisa Rudnick Jan 2006

Which Place, What Story?: Cultural Discourses At The Border Of The Blackfeet Reservation And Glacier National Park, Donal Carbaugh, Lisa Rudnick

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Among every known people, places are named, and in every known place, stories are told. Yet as one place, Jerusalem, makes so abundantly clear, the meanings of the place and the variety of stories attached to it can derive from a variety of traditions and can lead in many different directions. Just as various pilgrims are drawn to some sacred places, so do all people, in all places, come to know the meanings of at least some places through names, with the stories about them capturing their deeper significance, from the sacred to the mundane. Yet for each such place, …

Alexandre Hogue's Passion: Ecology And Agribusiness In The Crucified Land, Mark Andrew White Jan 2006

Alexandre Hogue's Passion: Ecology And Agribusiness In The Crucified Land, Mark Andrew White

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In 1939, Texas artist Alexandre Hogue completed The Crucified Land (Fig. 1), a striking comparison of water erosion on a Denton, Texas, wheat farm to the martyrdom of Jesus of Nazareth. The Crucified Land was originally intended as the final canvas of Hogue's Erosion series, which the artist began in 1932 as a condemnation of the careless agricultural practices that had produced wind and water erosion in his home state. When Hogue exhibited The Crucified Land that year at the Carnegie International, the painting's provocative religious overtones drew the notice of one critic, who referred to it as the latest …

Fields Of Opportunity: Wind Machines Return To The Plains, Jacob Sowers Jan 2006

Fields Of Opportunity: Wind Machines Return To The Plains, Jacob Sowers

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The last two decades have seen a rebirth of wind machines on the rural landscape. In ironic fashion the wind's kinetic energy has grown in significance through its ability to generate commercial amounts of electricity, the commodity that a few generations earlier hastened the demise of the old Great Plains windmill. Yet the reemergence of wind machines on the landscape has been slowed by local opposition. Many places across the country have seen resistance to the construction of vast wind turbine arrays. Although wind energy fulfills both the businessman's requirement for profit and the environmentalist's desire for clean electrical production, …

Digging Mechanisms And Substrate Preferences Of Shovel Nosed Lobsters, Ibacus Peronii (Decapoda: Scyllaridae), Zen Faulkes

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Digging is a distinct form of locomotion that poses different mechanical problems than other locomotor modes that are commonly used by crustaceans, e.g., walking, swimming. I examined the mechanisms of digging by shovel nosed lobsters (Ibacus peronii), which spend most of the day underneath sand. Ibacus peronii were videotaped while digging. Ibacus peronii use a “wedge” strategy to submerge into sand. An individual penetrates the sand with the walking legs, then extends the abdomen to push sand backwards, then flexes the abdomen while pushing backward with the legs, which slowly drives the body into the sand. This basic …

Incomplete Compensation And Migration Behavior: Has Anything Changed Between 1990 And 2000?, David E. Clark, William E. Herrin, Thomas A. Knapp, Nancy E. White Jan 2006

Incomplete Compensation And Migration Behavior: Has Anything Changed Between 1990 And 2000?, David E. Clark, William E. Herrin, Thomas A. Knapp, Nancy E. White

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Spatial equilibrium models rely on migration to arbitrage away differences in utility across locations net of moving costs, where remaining differences in wages and rents reflect the compensating differentials related to site-specific amenities. Recent refinements to the spatial equilibrium model focus upon the prospect of disequilibrium in amenity markets. Amenity market disequilibrium implies over- or under-compensation (incomplete compensation) across some locations, which suggests a role for these factors in subsequent migration. This paper follows the theoretical and empirical approach of Clark, Herrin, Knapp, and White (2003). An intercity wage regression is estimated where fixed effects capture the impact of site …

Anglo-American Privacy And Surveillance, Laura K. Donohue Jan 2006

Anglo-American Privacy And Surveillance, Laura K. Donohue

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The United States’ Terrorism Surveillance Program represents just one of many expansions in surveillance since 9/11, as legal controls previously introduced to protect citizens’ privacy and to prevent the misuse of surveillance powers have been relaxed. What makes the situation qualitatively different now is not just the lowering of the bar: digitization and the rapid advancement of technology mean that the type and volume of information currently available eclipse that of previous generations. The issue is not confined to the United States. Despite the incorporation of the European Convention of Human Rights into British law, the United Kingdom also appears …

Dimensional Crossover In Semiconductor Structures: From 3d Electron Transport To Ballistic Electrons In 1d, Karl-Fredrick Berggren Jan 2006

Dimensional Crossover In Semiconductor Structures: From 3d Electron Transport To Ballistic Electrons In 1d, Karl-Fredrick Berggren

Turkish Journal of Physics

Modern semiconductor technologies have made possible special devices in which a gradual dimensional crossover may be induced by means of applied electric fields. Two specific examples are described. The first one is a special GaAs field effect transistor in which the thickness of the active electron gas layer may be varied by external voltages. With decreasing layer thickness transverse states become quantized and by depopulating the corresponding subbands a tunable dimensional crossover from 3D to 2D is achieved. The second example describes how a 2D to 1D crossover may be obtained in high-mobility split-gate GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. Effects of interactions in …

Computational Studies On Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Nanotori, Tahi̇r Çağin, Guanghua Gao, William A. Goddard Iii

Turkish Journal of Physics

Carbon has diverse structures, especially (0-dimensional) fullerenes, (1-dimensional) tubes have generated great interest among scientists and technologists. Studies of the structures and properties of these low dimensional carbon molecules show tremendous potential for use in nanoscale device applications. Motivated by these exciting possibilities in finding new forms of carbon materials and their potential applications, we have designed hypothetical single wall carbon nano-toroids. Carbon toroids are also ideal in studying the elastic and plastic deformation behavior of nanotubes under bending loads. We can accurately correlate the behavior of the tubes to its uniform curvature. In this particular work we focused on …

Applications Of Genetic Algorithm To Quantum Mechanical Systems, Mehmet Şahi̇n, Ülfet Atav, Mehmet Tomak

Turkish Journal of Physics

Genetic algorithm (GA) inspired by the biological world is a general search and optimization method. It was first proposed by Holland in 1975. GA has been applied to many scientific areas especially in engineering optimization problems. It is also used in solving of quantum mechanical problems. In this study, we have applied this method to different realistic quantum mechanical problems of both self-consistent and non-self-consistent type. The results obtained are compared with the results of other methods and it is seen that the GA can be a very powerful alternative to some other traditional techniques such as variational method.

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Thermal Properties Of Intermetallic Alloys, H. H. Kart, Mehmet Tomak, Tahi̇r Çağin Jan 2006

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Thermal Properties Of Intermetallic Alloys, H. H. Kart, Mehmet Tomak, Tahi̇r Çağin

Turkish Journal of Physics

Molecular dynamics simulations of bulk copper, gold pure metals and their ordered intermetallics alloys of Cu_3Au(L1_2) and CuAu_3(L1_2) have been carried out between above 0 K and below the their melting points of the materials for predicting their temperature-dependent thermophysical properties. The effects of temperature and concentration on the physical properties such as enthalpy, volume, heat capacity, thermal expansion and density of Cu_xAu_{1-x} are studied. Especially, temperature-dependent polynomial functions of enthalpy, volume and density are obtained. Sutton-Chen (SC) and Quantum Sutton-Chen (Q-SC) many-body potentials are used in the constant enthalpy-constant pressure ensemble (HPN) and constant pressure-constant temperature ensemble (TPN). Three …

Molecular Dynamics Studies On Glass Formation Of Pd-Ni Alloys By Rapid Quenching, Sevgi̇ Özdemi̇r Kart, Mehmet Tomak, Mustafa Uludoğan, Tahi̇r Çağin

Turkish Journal of Physics

The rapid solidification of Pd-Ni alloys is studied with the constant-pressure and constant-temperature (TPN) and the constant-volume and constant-temperature (TVN) molecular dynamics technique to obtain an atomic description of glass formation in the alloy. Quantum Sutton-Chen potential for Pd-Ni binary system is applied in the simulations. We present some thermodynamic and structural results from simulations of such glasses over a range of compositions. The structural properties are analyzed by means of pair distribution function, volume, and enthalpy as a function of temperature and concentration at the cooling rates ranging from 5 K/ps to 0.05 K/ps to see whether the Pd-Ni …

Asphalt Pavement Pressure Distributions Using Tekscan Measurement System, Justin Anderson

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

As a nation that depends so heavily on its infrastructure, the United Statescontinually seeks to better maintain the investment that it has made in its roadways.Asphalt pavements make up the majority of the paved roadways in the United States andultimately contribute to the bulk of the expense of highway maintenance. The goal ofthis research was to develop a means for taking a simple measurement of pressure atvarious interfaces on and within an asphalt pavement structure in an effort to directlyassess the damaging effects of different wheel loadings. It is well known that everincreasing wheel loads and other unusual wheel loading …

Fabrication Of Polymer Based Optical Devices For Communication And Sensing, Sandhya Pochiraju Jan 2006

Fabrication Of Polymer Based Optical Devices For Communication And Sensing, Sandhya Pochiraju

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Polymer waveguides present a potentially low cost alternative to electronics in communication systems. Polymers offer relatively straightforward and economical fabrication when compared to conventional materials. In this study, a fabrication process for Bragg gratings in polymer waveguides was developed. Waveguides were designed using finite-element analysis, patterned via e-beam lithography, and a detailed fabrication method was developed. Surface-Plasmon Resonance (SPR) is a widely accepted method for biological and chemical sensing. Measurement of bulk refractive index changes and specific surface binding is a crucial part in any biosensing. Design and fabrication of a novel self-referencing SPR sensor is described and its functionality …
