The Influence Of The Pennsylvania Mainline Of Public Works, Joseph A. Strausbaugh Jan 2006

The Influence Of The Pennsylvania Mainline Of Public Works, Joseph A. Strausbaugh

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The Pennsylvania Mainline of Public Works, authorized and begun by Governor John Andrew Schulze in 1826, was the main transportation artery across Pennsylvania from the beginning of its operations in 1828 until the Pennsylvania Railroad purchased it in 1857. Though it was only in service for about thirty years, the Mainline was instrumental in shaping and affecting individuals, both passengers and employees of the canal; as well as Pennsylvania towns such as Saltsburg, Alexandria, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. This in turn affected national commerce.

Transfer Of Training From Flight Training Devices To Flight For Ab-Initio Pilots, Nickolas D. Macchiarella, Pamela K. Arban, Shawn M. Doherty

Publications

The application of flight simulation to meet pilot training needs continues to evolve. Flight simulations built with powerful and inexpensive computers are making high fidelity simulation available as a medium for training ab-initio pilots at Pilot Schools and Training Centers. The researchers conducted an 18-month study that applied an experimental flight-training curriculum comprised of 60% flight training device (FTD) flight and 40% airplane flight to certify Private Pilots under Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 142. The results from the research provided data to ascertain the effective transfer for each flight-training task. Ab-initio student pilots practiced each task to standard in …

Modeling Bus Priority Using Intermodal Dynamic Network Assignment-Simulation Methodology, Khaled F. Abdelghany, Ahmed F. Abdelghany, Hani S. Mahmassani, Akmal S. Abdelfatah Jan 2006

Modeling Bus Priority Using Intermodal Dynamic Network Assignment-Simulation Methodology, Khaled F. Abdelghany, Ahmed F. Abdelghany, Hani S. Mahmassani, Akmal S. Abdelfatah

Publications

This article presents a modeling framework that represents bus priority at signalized intersections in the context of its potential network-level and intermodal effects. The model incorporates bus priority within an intermodal dynamic traffic assignment simulation model. It dynamically assigns travelers to different modes and routes in the network according to prevailing traffic conditions, which result from applying a certain network control/bus priority scheme. The model considers changes in traffic conditions as a result of (1) drivers’ route choice adjustments due to changes in traffic signals settings and (2) modal shifts by travelers to take advantage of improved transit service. Three …

Experimental Investigation Of The Velocity Field In Buoyant Diffusion Flames Using Piv And Tpiv Algorithm, Lulu Sun, Xiangyang Zhou, Shankar Mahalingam, David R. Weise Jan 2006

Experimental Investigation Of The Velocity Field In Buoyant Diffusion Flames Using Piv And Tpiv Algorithm, Lulu Sun, Xiangyang Zhou, Shankar Mahalingam, David R. Weise

Publications

We investigated a simultaneous temporally and spatially resolved 2-D velocity field above a burning circular pan of alcohol using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The results obtained from PIV were used to assess a thermal particle image velocimetry (TPIV) algorithm previously developed to approximate the velocity field using the temperature field, simultaneously captured by an infrared (IR) thermal camera. By tracing “thermal particles,” which were assumed to be virtual particles that corresponded to pixels of temperature values in successive IR images, the TPIV algorithm estimated a larger scale instantaneous velocity field than either a single-point velocity measurement (e.g., LDV) or the …

Interactive Technologies For The Public Sphere Toward A Theory Of Critical Creative Technology, Pamela Lynnette Jennings Jan 2006

Interactive Technologies For The Public Sphere Toward A Theory Of Critical Creative Technology, Pamela Lynnette Jennings

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Digital media cultural practices continue to address the social, cultural and aesthetic contexts of the global information economy, perhaps better called ecology, by inventing new methods and genres that encourage interactive engagement, collaboration, exploration and learning. The theoretical framework for creative critical technology evolved from the confluence of the arts, human computer interaction, and critical theories of technology. Molding this nascent theoretical framework from these seemingly disparate disciplines was a reflexive process where the influence of each component on each other spiraled into the theory and practice as illustrated through the Constructed Narratives project. Research that evolves from an arts …

“Statistical Judo”: The Rhetoric Of Senate Inaction In The Judicial Appointment Process, E. Stewart Moritz Jan 2006

“Statistical Judo”: The Rhetoric Of Senate Inaction In The Judicial Appointment Process, E. Stewart Moritz

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This article first briefly summarizes the issues that arise in the lower-court judicial confirmation process, and examines how the issues differ from those that arise during the confirmation of Supreme Court justices. The article considers constitutionally-based differences as well as practical differences in Senate and Executive behavior that have developed during more than two centuries of judicial confirmations.

The body of the article offers a chronological history and critique of the rhetoric of both Republican and Democratic senators in discussing lower-court confirmations during the 107th Congress. This congressional session, spanning the years 2001 to 2002, was a particularly interesting one …

Part 7: Beach Replenishment: Who Benefits, Who Pays, Who Should Pay?, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Replenishing the region’s beaches with sand is critical to their attractiveness. More than $100 million has been spent on beach replenishment in Virginia Beach over the past decade, with the federal government paying about two-thirds. We find that beach replenishment pays off handsomely for Virginia Beach, but also that the city probably should pay a larger share of the cost.

The Presence, Prevalence And Antibiotic Resistance Of Microbes In The Pamunkey River Basin, Christina Mcdowell

Honors Theses

This project examined the presence, prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Coliforms (mainly Escherichia coli), Staph/occocus aureus, fecal Streptococcus, andEnterobacteriacae found in the water samples taken from three selected sites on the North Anna, South Anna, and Little Rivers of the Pamunkey River Basin. The diversity and concentration of the microbes isolated from these sites was evaluated in late January and late March allowing for a comparison of the occurrence of microbes at different times and between the different sites. Over the course of two months the concentration of colonies increased based on colony counts from Nutrient agar. The rate of …

Political Differentiation In Consumer Preferences For Underdog Businesses : Does Everybody Love A Winner?, Kelly O'Connor Jan 2006

Political Differentiation In Consumer Preferences For Underdog Businesses : Does Everybody Love A Winner?, Kelly O'Connor

Honors Theses

In an exploratory study of the intersection between the worlds of social behavior and personal economics, this experiment will examine the links between political ideology and consumer preference for an ''underdog" business. The stereotypical image of the Mom and Pop comer store is romantic, but when we juxtapose this sentiment with the convenience and predictability of shopping at a giant retailer, it is unclear which store consumers will prefer, and why. This study tested the hypothesis that individuals with more liberal political orientations will be more likely to exhibit a preference for underdog businesses than individuals with conservative political leanings, …

How Does My Work Become Our Work? Dilution Of Authorship In Scientific Papers, And The Need For The Academy To Obey Copyright Law, Sean B. Seymore Jan 2006

How Does My Work Become Our Work? Dilution Of Authorship In Scientific Papers, And The Need For The Academy To Obey Copyright Law, Sean B. Seymore

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Professors enjoy a world of extensive institutional autonomy and individual academic freedom. Universities and courts defer to a professor’s judgment for “genuinely academic decisions” unless they depart from academic norms. Universities, courts, and professional societies should intervene, however, when academic norms and custom do not comport with the law.

Shifting Burdens And Concealing Electronic Evidence: Discovery In The Digital Era, Rebecca Rockwood Jan 2006

Shifting Burdens And Concealing Electronic Evidence: Discovery In The Digital Era, Rebecca Rockwood

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

In the twenty-first century, persons involved in the legal profession will be forced to confront technological issues. Computers and technology have pervaded every aspect of society, and the legal system is no exception. The discovery process is a dramatic example of how lawyers and courts strain to keep up with technological advances. Traditional discovery practices have been severely overhauled as electronic information becomes increasingly prevalent. What was once a simple discovery request can now become an overwhelming task, as defendants must wade through a plethora of electronic documents in an attempt to comply with the court’s discovery orders.

Paradoxes And Puzzles: Appreciating Gardens And Urban Nature, Stephanie Ross Jan 2006

Paradoxes And Puzzles: Appreciating Gardens And Urban Nature, Stephanie Ross

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

To explore our appreciation of gardens and urban nature, I propose a recursive definition of original or wild nature together with guidelines for discerning degrees of naturalness. Arguing (contra Robert Elliott) that nature can be restored as well as degraded, I characterize four varieties of urban nature - interrupted, altered, constructed, and virtual. I build on Stan Godlovitch's comments about scale to suggest two modes of appreciation - macroscopic and fine-focused. I close by discussing some particular examples - parks, environmental art, gardens - and drawing some conclusions for the appreciation of vernacular gardens.[1]
