Multi-Dimensional Seismic Imaging Using The Inverse Scattering Series, Fang Liu, Arthur B. Weglein, Kristopher A. Innanen, Bogdan Nita Jan 2006

Multi-Dimensional Seismic Imaging Using The Inverse Scattering Series, Fang Liu, Arthur B. Weglein, Kristopher A. Innanen, Bogdan Nita

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The inverse scattering series (ISS) is a comprehensive multidimensional theory for processing and inverting seismic reflection data, that may be task-separated such that meaningful sub-problems of the seismic inverse problem may be accomplished individually, each without an accurate velocity model. We describe a task-separated subseries of the ISS geared towards accurate location in depth of reflectors, in particular the mechanisms of the series that act in multiple dimensions. We show that some 2D ISS imaging terms have analogs in previously developed 1D ISS imaging theory (e.g., Weglein et al., 2002; Shaw, 2005) and others do not; the former are used …

Guantanamo And U.S. Law, Joseph C. Sweeney Jan 2006

Guantanamo And U.S. Law, Joseph C. Sweeney

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article deals with the United States' presence at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the domestic and international law issues that have arisen, and the nature of the jurisdiction exercised there by the United States. It does not deal with the operation of the prison facility. Guantanamo Bay is near the eastern end of Cuba, 628 miles (1000 km) from the capital, Havana. It is a deep-water harbor, protected by hills from the extremes of Caribbean weather; but it has an unhealthy tropical climate. The forty-five square miles of the Guantanamo Naval Base have been occupied by the United States since the …

Following The Path Of Oil: The Law Of The Sea Or Realpolitik - What Good Does Law Do In The South China Sea Territorial Conflicts?, Wendy N. Duong Jan 2006

Following The Path Of Oil: The Law Of The Sea Or Realpolitik - What Good Does Law Do In The South China Sea Territorial Conflicts?, Wendy N. Duong

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article describes the relevant features of United Nationas Convention on the Law of the Sea ("UNCLOS"), demonstrates how the Convention is ill-equipped to handle the complexity of the South China Sea disputes, and explores the role of the private sector behind State actors in any negotiated resolution of these disputes. This Article also surveys the development of these disputes from the last decade to the present day, using as a case study the tension between China and Vietnam in the 1990s when UNCLOS went into force. Although the case study occurred in the past decade, the pattern of behaviors …

Educational Levels And Political Literacy: The Case Of Adults Enrolled In The Inea Program In El Paso,Texas, Carolina Pallares Jan 2006

Educational Levels And Political Literacy: The Case Of Adults Enrolled In The Inea Program In El Paso,Texas, Carolina Pallares

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The political socialization process is ever-present in our daily lives. Traditional academic philosophies contend that one needs a formal education to achieve a high state of political awareness. This study challenges that traditional belief by proving that adults with little or no formal education can demonstrate a high level of political awareness.

The purpose of this study is to show that, absent a formal traditional education, individuals may be politically active and have an understanding of complex political issues. In order to test this hypoThesis, I interviewed participants enrolled in the Instituto Nacional de Educación para los Adultos, …

A Simple, Inexpensive, And Effective Light- Carrying Laryngoscopic Blade For Orotracheal Intubation Of Rats, Robert C. Molthen Jan 2006

A Simple, Inexpensive, And Effective Light- Carrying Laryngoscopic Blade For Orotracheal Intubation Of Rats, Robert C. Molthen

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The research paradigm of using large laboratory animals, in which oroendotracheal intubations are relatively easy, is shifting toward the use of small animals, such as rodents, in which oropharyngeal access is limited, the arytenoid cartilage cycles are faster, and the glottis is much smaller. The considerable growth recently seen in preclinical imaging studies is accompanied by an increased number of rats and mice requiring in vivo intubation for airway management. Tracheal access is important for ventilation, administration of inhaled anesthetics, instillation of drugs or imaging agents, and maintenance of airway patency to reduce mortality during and after operations. I fashioned …

Trigraph Latency As A Method To Infer Fatigue During Typing, Bhagirathi Nagaraju Jan 2006

Trigraph Latency As A Method To Infer Fatigue During Typing, Bhagirathi Nagaraju

Master's Theses and Capstones

Due to the use of computers for long durations and prolonged typing on keyboards many computer users are suffering from Repetitive Strain Injuries. In this thesis keystroke dynamics, specifically the changes in the trigraph latencies of some words are analyzed to infer fatigue during typing. These dynamics are collected using a software application and are represented as bar-graphs for data analysis. The technology developed is completely seamless and does not require any hardware modifications. The investigation here is one aspect of the integrated effort to infer fatigue from typing dynamics.

The thesis is divided into three phases. In the first …

The Strength And Structure Of The Galactic Center Magnetic Field, Ted La Rosa, Steven N. Shore, T. Joseph W. Lazio, Namir E. Kassim Jan 2006

The Strength And Structure Of The Galactic Center Magnetic Field, Ted La Rosa, Steven N. Shore, T. Joseph W. Lazio, Namir E. Kassim

Faculty Articles

This paper summarizes recently obtained, strong evidence for a weak global field in the Galactic center (GC): the existence of a large-scale region of diffuse, low-frequency, nonthermal emission coincident with the central molecular zone. The overall energetics of this emission, considered along with constraints on GC cosmic ray energy density and diffusion, indicate clearly that the magnetic field pervading this region is ∼ 10 μG. For completeness, additional points on the orientation of the GC nonthermal filaments, rotation measures of extragalactic sources seen through the GC, and comparison with other normal spiral galaxies are also reviewed.

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Survey, Travis M. Trimble Jan 2006

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Survey, Travis M. Trimble

Scholarly Works

In 2005 the Eleventh Circuit courts addressed issues of regulatory interpretation of the Clean Air Act (“CAA”); compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”) in connection with the development of wetlands; and a conflict between the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (“FEMA”) coastal flood insurance program and the Endangered Species Act (“ESA”). First, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals invalidated a rule of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management that exempted certain stack emissions that otherwise violated the State Implementation Plan under the CAA. Also, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama heard one of several …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to determine the serum Cu, Zn, Se and Fe concentrations at 60, 100, and 150 days of pregnancy and at 45 days of parturition in twin and single pregnant sheep. A total of 30 pregnant Akkaraman sheep in 2 groups (15 single pregnancies, 15 twin pregnancies), aged 3-5 years and weighing 40-50 kg were used. The blood samples were analyzed for serum Cu, Zn, Se and Fe concentrations. No statistically significant difference was found for Se, Cu, Fe and Zn concentrations between the twin and single pregnancy groups. Insignificant decreases (P > 0.05) in serum Zn and …
