Performance Assessment Of Porous Asphalt For Stormwater Treatment, Joshua F. Briggs
Performance Assessment Of Porous Asphalt For Stormwater Treatment, Joshua F. Briggs
Master's Theses and Capstones
The objective of this study is to assess the stormwater management capability of porous asphalt (PA) as a parking lot in Durham, New Hampshire. The site was constructed in 2004 and consists of a 4-inch PA pavement course overlying a porous media reservoir, including a fine-grained filter course. Cost per PA parking space ($2,200) was comparable to that for dense mix asphalt ($2,000). Pavement durability has been adequate. The lot retained or infiltrated 25% of precipitation (18 months) and 0.03 lb/sf of chloride (1 year). There was high initial surface infiltration capacity (IC) at two locations (1,000--1,300 in/hr), and moderate …
Analyte Rebinding Of Optimized Molecularly Imprinted Polymers In Water, Sayantan Roy
Analyte Rebinding Of Optimized Molecularly Imprinted Polymers In Water, Sayantan Roy
Master's Theses and Capstones
A series of non-covalent Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) were prepared using caffeine and guanosine separately as template molecules. A wide variety of MIPs were prepared by varying a number of formulation parameters, including the template, recognition monomer, crosslinking agent and porogen types and concentrations. The specificity and selectivity of the MIPs were determined by rebinding studies in an aqueous medium using HPLC detection and the results were supported by gas adsorption experiments. Rebinding conditions, such as the pH and MIP concentration were also varied to determine the best conditions for analyte recognition. By using variety of polymerization conditions the particle …
The Role Of The Schmutzdecke In Escherichia Coli Removal In Slow Sand And Riverbank Filtration, Michael C. Unger
The Role Of The Schmutzdecke In Escherichia Coli Removal In Slow Sand And Riverbank Filtration, Michael C. Unger
Master's Theses and Capstones
A series of studies was conducted on laboratory scale sand columns under varying operational and design conditions with spiked concentrations of E. coli to investigate the role of the schmutzdecke, a biologically active layer that develops at the interface of the water and filter in slow sand filtration (SSF) and riverbank filtration (RBF). Results confirmed that E. coli removals in slow-rate biological filters occur primarily at the interface and are related to schmutzdecke ripening state, empty bed contact time, biological activity, temperature, and protistan abundance. Using a suite of analyses characterizing the biofilm growing on the schmutzdecke, no connection was …

Fabrication And Tribological Properties Of Hard Thin Films With Solid Lubricant Microreservoirs, John H. Zimmerman
Master's Theses and Capstones
Hard coatings containing micron-sized reservoirs have been fabricated and investigated to evaluate their tribological properties. These composite coatings have the potential to reduce friction and extend the life of wear surfaces through the use of a structural matrix embedded with microreservoirs containing solid lubricants. In this thesis, methods of using polymer or silica microspheres as templates for reservoirs in wear resistant coatings were examined. Magnetron rf-sputtered TiN and TiCN films and magnetron rf reactively sputtered TiN films were investigated for use as hard films containing these microreservoirs. The reservoir size as a function of microsphere size and film thickness was …

Taking A Bite Out Of The Harmful Effects Of Mercury In Dental Fillings: Advocating For National Legislation For Mercury Amalgams, Kimberly M. Baga
Journal of Law and Health
Mary Stephenson, a fifty-nine-year-old grandmother, visited dozens of counselors and experienced with an array of antidepressants but nothing worked to curb her suicidal feelings. Janie McDowell, a fifty-six-year-old housewife, suffered from hand tremors, leg-muscle spasms, recurring nausea, chronic bladder and kidney infections, severe depression, short-term memory loss, and slurred speech. Freya Koss, a former event planner, experienced dizziness and double vision. Physicians misdiagnosed Koss with lupus, multiple sclerosis, and, finally myasthenia gravis. The common theme among these medical tragedies is that the above victims all returned to being healthy, active adults after the removal of their mercury amalgam dental fillings. …

Citizenship Theories, Immigration And Nationality Act Section 309 & Nguyen V. Ins: How The Supreme Court Got It Wrong, Rachel Baskin
Citizenship Theories, Immigration And Nationality Act Section 309 & Nguyen V. Ins: How The Supreme Court Got It Wrong, Rachel Baskin
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The note critiques the Supreme Court's decision in *Tuan Anh Nguyen v. INS*, which upheld the constitutionality of Section 309 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). This provision imposes additional requirements for U.S. citizen fathers, unlike mothers, to transmit citizenship to children born abroad. The author argues that the Court's ruling perpetuates gender discrimination and undermines the deeper meaning of citizenship, which should encompass membership, belonging, and substantive ties to the nation rather than mere legal formalities. The analysis draws on republican, communitarian, and liberal theories of citizenship to advocate for a more inclusive and gender-neutral approach to citizenship …
Censure The Tree For Its Rotten Apple: Attributing Liability To Parents For The Copyright Infringement Of Their Minor Children, Chad Silver
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The note argues that holding parents legally responsible for copyright infringement committed by their minor children could serve as an effective deterrent against illegal music downloading. It explores the legal frameworks for parental liability, including contributory and vicarious liability, and evaluates the potential benefits and challenges of this approach in addressing the decline of the recording industry due to illegal file sharing.

Modeling Volume Changes In Porous Electrodes, Parthasarathy M. Gomadam, John W. Weidner
Modeling Volume Changes In Porous Electrodes, Parthasarathy M. Gomadam, John W. Weidner
Faculty Publications
A three-dimensional mathematical model is presented to describe volume changes in porous electrodes occurring during operation. Material conservation equations are used to derive governing relationships between electrode dimensions and porosity for deposition/precipitation, intercalation, and ionomer-based electrodes. By introducing a parameter, called the swelling coefficient, the relative magnitudes of the change in electrode dimensions and the change in porosity are determined. The swelling coefficient is design-dependent and measured experimentally for a given cell design. The model is general and forms a critical addition required to extend the existing porous electrode models to include volume change effects. For the special case of …

The authors have fabricated combinatorial Ni–Ti–Pt ternary metal gate thin film libraries on HfO2 using magnetron co-sputtering to investigate flatband voltage shift (ΔVfb) , work function (Φm) , and leakage current density (JL) variations. A more negative ΔVfb is observed close to the Ti-rich corner than at the Ni- and Pt-rich corners, implying smaller Φm near the Ti-rich corners and higher Φm near the Ni- and Pt-rich corners. In addition, measured JL values can be explained consistently with the observed Φm variations. Combinatorial methodologies prove to be useful …

Catch 1201: A Legislative History And Content Analysis Of The Dmca Exemption Proceedings, Bill D. Herman, Oscar H. Gandy Jr.
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
17 U.S.C. § 1201(a)(1) prohibits circumventing a technological protection measure (TPM) that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work. In the name of mitigating the innocent casualties of this new ban, Congress constructed a triennial rulemaking, administered by the Register of Copyrights, to determine temporary exemptions. This paper considers the legislative history of this rulemaking, and it reports the results of a systematic content analysis of its 2000 and 2003 proceedings.
Inspired by the literature on political agendas, policymaking institutions, venue shifting, and theories of delegation, we conclude that the legislative motivations for § 1201 were laundered through international treaties, …

Thermo-Mechanical Characterization Of Copper Through-Wafer Interconnects, Peter A. Miranda, Amy J. Moll
Thermo-Mechanical Characterization Of Copper Through-Wafer Interconnects, Peter A. Miranda, Amy J. Moll
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Copper through wafer interconnects (TWIs) have become a viable solution to providing interconnectivity between stacked die. In a world where minimizing chip real estate while increasing functionality is the goal for further miniaturization of electronics, TWIs hold a key role as new packaging schemes become critical for overall higher density. Little is known, however, about the impacts of mismatched coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) inherent to the materials used in their construction. CTE differences, if left unresolved, can pose reliability issues during TWI operation. This research focuses on providing insight into the stress levels experienced by TWI materials through finite …

A Mathematical Model For The Validation Of Safe Air-Blast Chilling Of Cooked Hams, L. J. Wang, A Amézquita, Curtis L. Weller
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
An integrated mathematical model of heat transfer and temperature-dependent bacterial growth was developed to validate the safety of cooked hams during air-blast chilling. Heat transfer through a cooked ham was mathematically modeled and analyzed with a finite element method. Response of bacteria to temperatures was quantitatively described using predictive microbiology. The cumulative effect of temperature history on the bacterial growth was taken into account in the model. For chilling cooked hams from 71°C to 10°C, the maximum error between the predicted and experimental core temperature was within 2.2°C, and the deviation between the predicted and measured total weight losses was …

Mission (Im-)Possible? Increasing The Participation Of Female Students In University Computing Courses, Iwona Miliszewska, Anne Venables, Grace Tan
EDU-COM International Conference
In 1990 the Australian Federal government set a target for a 40% enrolment rate of females in all non-traditional areas of study including computer science. In view of this target, the low enrolment of females in computer science at Victoria University is a persisting concern: enrolment rates have continued to decline from 30% in the early 1990s to less than 20% in recent years, despite significant attempts to arrest the decline by introducing annual student recruitment events such as school visits, career nights, and University Open Days. This suggested that the issue of encouraging females to study computing needed to …
The Integration Of Professional Communication Skills Into Engineering Education, Dorthy Missingham
