MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are capable of controlling gene expression by targeting complimentary sequences in many mRNAs. Thus, a small number of miRNAs are capable of regulating expression of many different genes. miRNAs have been found in all animals from Drosophila to human and they are highly conserved. This work was undertaken in order to identify such RNAs in the newt eye.

Design Of A 14-Bit Fully Differential Discrete Time Delta-Sigma Modulator, Sumit Kumar Nathany Nov 2006

Design Of A 14-Bit Fully Differential Discrete Time Delta-Sigma Modulator, Sumit Kumar Nathany

Theses

Analog to digital converters play an essential role in modern mixed signal circuit design. Conventional Nyquist-rate converters require analog components that are precise and highly immune to noise and interference. In contrast, oversampling converters can be implemented using simple and high-tolerance analog components. Moreover, sampling at high frequency eliminates the need for abrupt cutoffs in the analog anti-aliasing filters. A noise shaping technique is also used in DS converters in addition to oversampling to achieve a high resolution conversion. A significant advantage of the method is that analog signals are converted using simple and high-tolerance analog circuits, usually a 1-bit …

Simulation Of A Carbon Nanotube-Based Compliant Parallel-Guiding Mechanism: A Nanomechanical Building Block, Martin L. Culpepper, Christopher M. Dibiasio, Robert M. Panas, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

The authors report the behavior of a nanoscale parallel-guiding mechanism wherein the compliant components are single-walled carbon nanotubes. Parallel-guiding mechanisms are often the building blocks of macro- and microscale mechanical systems. The authors present results that provide insight into the performance of a parallel-guiding mechanism for nanoscale devices. The device exhibits a range over 75% of the device size, i.e., 5.5 nm, when actuated with 6.4 nN. Below 3.6 nN, displacements are due to bulk elastic bending of the nanotubes. Above 5.2 nN, displacements are governed by the hingelike bending of kinks in the nanotubes. van der Waals forces are …

Self-Localization In Ubiquitous Computing Using Sensor Fusion, Jeffrey Zampieron Nov 2006

Self-Localization In Ubiquitous Computing Using Sensor Fusion, Jeffrey Zampieron

Theses

The widespread availability of small and inexpensive mobile computing devices and the desire to connect them at any time in any place has driven the need to develop an accurate means of self-localization. Devices that typically operate outdoors use GPS for localization. However, most mobile computing devices operate not only outdoors but indoors where GPS is typically unavailable. Therefore, other localization techniques must be used. Currently, there are several commercially available indoor localization systems. However, most of these systems rely on specialized hardware which must be installed in the mobile device as well as the building of operation. The deployment …

Proteomic Identification Of In Vivo Substrates For Matrix Metalloproteinases 2 And 9 Reveals A Mechanism For Resolution Of Inflammation, Philippe Tessier Nov 2006

Proteomic Identification Of In Vivo Substrates For Matrix Metalloproteinases 2 And 9 Reveals A Mechanism For Resolution Of Inflammation, Philippe Tessier

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Clearance of allergic inflammatory cells from the lung through matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is necessary to prevent lethal asphyxiation, but mechanistic insight into this essential homeostatic process is lacking. In this study, we have used a proteomics approach to determine how MMPs promote egression of lung inflammatory cells through the airway. MMP2- and MMP9-dependent cleavage of individual Th2 chemokines modulated their chemotactic activity; however, the net effect of complementing bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of allergen-challenged MMP2(-/-)/MMP9(-/-) mice with active MMP2 and MMP9 was to markedly enhance its overall chemotactic activity. In the bronchoalveolar fluid of MMP2(-/-)/MMP9(-/-) allergic mice, we identified several chemotactic …

Characterization Of Black Liquor Sprays For Application To Entrained-Flow Processes, Andrew John Mackrory Nov 2006

Characterization Of Black Liquor Sprays For Application To Entrained-Flow Processes, Andrew John Mackrory

Theses and Dissertations

In this work the differences between and characteristics of water and high solids, heated black liquor sprays from air-assist atomizers are examined. Sprays were imaged with a high speed camera and the images analyzed with computer code to produce droplet size data and macroscopic spray characteristics such as mass distribution. Fluid flow rates were measured to allow relevant dimensionless groups for the spray to be calculated. A 1000 degree C tubular furnace was placed around the spray to determine the effect of industrially relevant temperatures on the droplet formation process, relative to room-temperature conditions. It was found that high solids …

Use Of Xenopus Laevis Oocytes A Microincubators, Sergei Paylian

USF Patents

The present invention concerns methods for de-differentiation and stabilize cells, such as progenitor cells, by introducing the cells into the cytoplasm of host oocytes, such as Xenopus laevis oocytes. Advantageously, this method obviates the need for any nuclear transfer procedure, which is known to disrupt the chromosomal architecture of donor and recipient cells. The present invention also concerns host oocytes encapsulating cells that have been introduced into their cytoplasm. The present invention also concerns cells that have been removed from the host oocytes.
