Perceptual Or Analytical Processing? Evidence From Children's And Adult's Performance On The Euclidean Traveling Salesperson Problem, Iris Van Rooij, Alissa Schactman, Helena Kadlec, Ulrike Stege Dec 2006

Perceptual Or Analytical Processing? Evidence From Children's And Adult's Performance On The Euclidean Traveling Salesperson Problem, Iris Van Rooij, Alissa Schactman, Helena Kadlec, Ulrike Stege

The Journal of Problem Solving

The Euclidean Traveling Salesperson Problem (E-TSP) is a useful task to study how humans optimize when faced with computational intractability. It has been found that humans are capable of finding high-quality solutions for E TSP in a relatively short time and with seemingly little cognitive effort. This observation has led to two general proposals: The high quality of performance on E-TSP reflects (a) the output of automatic and innate perceptual processes or (b) a fundamentally intelligent approach to the task by humans. An experiment was performed to compare performance of three age groups (7- year-olds, 12-year-olds, and adults). Our findings …

Are Individual Differences In Performance On Perceptual And Cognitive Optimization Problems Determined By General Intelligence?, Nicholas R. Burns, Michael D. Lee, Douglas Vickers

The Journal of Problem Solving

Studies of human problem solving have traditionally used deterministic tasks that require the execution of a systematic series of steps to reach a rational and optimal solution. Most real-world problems, however, are characterized by uncertainty, the need to consider an enormous number of variables and possible courses of action at each stage in solving the problem, and the need to optimize the solution subject to multiple interacting constraints. There are reliable individual differences in people’s abilities to solve such realistic problems. It also seems likely that people’s ability to solve these difficult problems reflects, or depends on, their intelligence. We …

Visual Learning Objects: Enable Faculty To Focus On Active Learning, Pandeli Glavanis Dr. Dec 2006

Visual Learning Objects: Enable Faculty To Focus On Active Learning, Pandeli Glavanis Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

In two recent issues of New Chalk Talk (Vol.6, Issue 2 & 6) I suggested that “learning objects” enhance active learning and that “visual learning objects”, in particular, contribute significantly to the learning relationship. In this issue I wish to elaborate on how such “visual learning objects” are the key element that liberates faculty from having to design and construct their own demonstrations and illustrations (reinvent the wheel) in their respective courses and thus enable them to focus on critical and active learning instead.

Effects Of Visual Distractions In The Classroom Environment On The Time On Task Of Elementary Students With Adhd, Kate E. S. Harris Dec 2006

Effects Of Visual Distractions In The Classroom Environment On The Time On Task Of Elementary Students With Adhd, Kate E. S. Harris

Theses & Honors Papers

The focus of this study is to demonstrate that the visual distractions, narrowly defined as wall decoration, in an elementary classroom can be a factor in the amount of time students with ADHD spend on-task in that classroom. This study builds upon the information revealed by studies conducted by such researchers as Creekmore (1987), Cruickshank (1967), Doyle, Anderson, and Halcomb (1976), and Steinkamp (1980), which tested the effects of visual distractions on participants with ADD/HD . These studies did not use learning tasks and used distractions that are not typical to an elementary classroom. This study attempted to answer the …

The Effects Of Viscoelastic Behavior On The Operation Of A Delayed Resonator Vibration Absorber, John Cowans Dec 2006

The Effects Of Viscoelastic Behavior On The Operation Of A Delayed Resonator Vibration Absorber, John Cowans

All Theses

Delayed resonators have proven to be effective vibration absorbers (VAs) for tracking and canceling the effects of harmonic excitations on a structure. The Delayed Resonator (DR) is selfcontained, as no information from outside of its substructure is required for proper operation. It adjusts for variations in frequency using time-delay and gain as control parameters.
This thesis examines the relationship between viscoelastic (VE) loss mechanisms in systems with DR and the choice of modeling method used to calculate control parameters and determine system stability. It is hypothesized that a VE loss mechanism approximated by a single viscous dashpot may lead to …

Controlling Steam Flood Migration With Air Injection Wells, Rex Hodges Dec 2006

Controlling Steam Flood Migration With Air Injection Wells, Rex Hodges

All Dissertations

Steam flooding is an aggressive remediation technology for removing volatile organic chemical (VOC) sources that slowly dissolve into passing groundwater. Plume concentrations can be reduced, accelerating cleanup, and decreasing plume management costs. Steam injected in wells surrounding the source spreads outward and develops into a front that drives contamination to a system of groundwater pumping wells in the saturated zone and soil vapor extraction wells in the vadose zone. The process can be modeled with the non-isothermal multi-phase flow simulator T2VOC to include operation designs and factors at individual sites.
A pilot field-scale test at the Savannah River Site (SRS) …

Does Your Wireless Lan Have Criminal Intent?, Michael Crowley, Andrew Woodward

Australian Information Security Management Conference

All of the literature relating to wireless network security has focused on the flaws, newer alternatives and suggestions for securing the network. There is much speculation and anecdotal statements in relation to what can happen if a breach occurs, but this is mostly from a computer security perspective, and mostly expressed in terms of potential for financial loss. This paper examines the potential legal ramifications of failing to properly secure a wireless network. Several scenarios are examined within based on usage of wireless on the various category of attack. Legal opinion, backed up with case law, is provided for each …

Cyber Crime And Biometric Authentication – The Problem Of Privacy Versus Protection Of Business Assets, Michael G. Crowley Dec 2006

Cyber Crime And Biometric Authentication – The Problem Of Privacy Versus Protection Of Business Assets, Michael G. Crowley

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Cyber crime is now a well recognised international problem that is a major issue for anyone who runs, manages, owns, uses or accesses computer systems linked to the worldwide web. Computer systems are business assets. Personal biometric information is also an asset. Studies have shown that privacy concerns represent a key hurdle to the successful introduction of biometric authentication. In addition, terrorist activity and the resultant legislation have added an additional risk factor businesses need to take into account if they propose using biometric authentication technology. This paper explores the use of biometric authentication to protect business and individual assets. …

The Derivation Of A Conceptual Model For It Security Outsourcing, W D. Wilde, M J. Warren, W Hutchinson Dec 2006

The Derivation Of A Conceptual Model For It Security Outsourcing, W D. Wilde, M J. Warren, W Hutchinson

Australian Information Security Management Conference

IT security outsourcing is the establishment of a contractual relationship between an organization with an outside vendor which assumes responsibility for the organisation’s security functions. Outsourcing in IS has had a variable history of success and the complexity of the decision making process leads to a substantial degree of uncertainty. This is especially so in the realm of IS security since the protection of both hardware and software systems is placed in the hands of an external provider. This paper is a fuller and more comprehensive paper of a previous paper outlining the effectiveness of the decision making process by …

Identification Of The Rassf3 Gene As A Potential Tumor Suppressor Responsible For The Resistance To Mammary Tumor Development In Mmtv/Neu Transgenic Mice, Isabelle Jacquemart Dec 2006

Identification Of The Rassf3 Gene As A Potential Tumor Suppressor Responsible For The Resistance To Mammary Tumor Development In Mmtv/Neu Transgenic Mice, Isabelle Jacquemart

All Dissertations

The MMTV/neu transgenic mouse line is a well-documented animal model for studying HER2/neu-related breast cancer. It has been reported that a small percentage, approximately 20%, of the virgin female MMTV/neu mice seems resistant to the development of mammary gland adenoma, despite the overexpression of the neu oncogene.
To identify the factors that are responsible for the tumor resistance in these MMTV/neu female transgenic mice, comparative genetic profiling was used to screen the alterations in gene expression in the mammary gland. A novel gene named the RAS Association domain (RalGDS/AF-6) Family 3 (Rassf3), which belongs to a family of RAS effectors …

Mnc Liability For International Human Rights Violations Under The Alien Tort Claims Act., Frank Christian Olah

ExpressO

This paper seeks to elucidate the fundamental sources of ATCA jurisprudence that have modernized the act into the weapon it has become for foreign human rights plaintiffs. It also attempts to describe some of the forms of liability asserted against MNCs, paying special attention to the competing forms of aiding & abetting liability as conceptualized in the Unocal case. Part II of this paper will provide a brief and concise review of the three cases every ATCA corporate defendant should know: Filartiga, Kadic and Sosa. These cases lay the groundwork for human rights litigation against MNCs under the ATCA’s modern …

Hiding Evidence From The Boss: Attorney-Client Privilege And Company Computers, Kelcey Nichols Dec 2006

Hiding Evidence From The Boss: Attorney-Client Privilege And Company Computers, Kelcey Nichols

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Recent court decisions in In re Asia Global Crossing, Ltd., People v. Jiang, and Curto v. Medical World Communications have held that attorney-client privilege can protect certain information located on an employer-issued computer from disclosure if the employee had a reasonable expectation of privacy. This Article provides a brief background on attorney-client privilege and explores the factors courts consider when determining whether an employee has this reasonable expectation. These factors include the scope of employer monitoring, the employer-employee agreement pertaining to the computer, the presence of password-protection, the location of the computer, and the relevancy of the evidence …

Phylogeny Of Family Limnephilidae (Insecta: Trichoptera) With Emphasis On Tribe Limnephilini (Subfamily Limnephilinae), Tatyana Vshivkova

All Dissertations

Morphological characters of adults and immature stages of Limnephilidae were analyzed with modern phylogenetic techniques, including traditionally used characters and some that have been poorly investigated or never studied. For the first time, monophyly is inferred for the following nominotypical taxa: superfamily Limnephiloidea, family Limnephilidae, subfamily Limnephilinae, tribe Limnephilini, and Limnephilus sensu stricto. Some other higher taxa are distinguished based on high bootstrap support, unreversed synapomorphies, and/or topography, including a new family-group category for Trichoptera, 'Branch,' more inclusive than the family category and less inclusive than the superfamily category. These new taxa in Limnephiloidea are as follows: Brachycentrida New Branch …
