Solution And Solid State Interactions Between Ionic Π-Systems, Jing Chen Jan 2006

Solution And Solid State Interactions Between Ionic Π-Systems, Jing Chen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Although attractive interactions between π systems (π-π interaction) have been known for many years, understanding of its origin is still incomplete. Quantitative measuring of π-stacking is challenging due to the weak nature of the π-π interaction. This dissertation aims at elucidating a quantitative conformational analysis by NMR ring current anisotropy of an organic compound capable of intramolecular π-stacking in solution and studying charge effects on the stacking of π-systems. This dissertation offers four contributions to the area. (1) A general approach to four-state, conformational analysis based on the magnetic anisotropy of molecules undergoing fast dynamic exchange is described. (2) Study …

This project utilized synthesis and in vitro assays to generate antagonist SARs at various nAChR subtypes. Alkylation of the pyridino nitrogen of the nicotine molecule afforded subtype specific antagonists at a42* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. Using this data, a series of mono-azaaromatic quaternary salts were produced and evaluated in binding and functional assays for a42* and a7* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. Additionally, bis-azaaromatic quaternary salts were synthesized and evaluated in the same assays. Two potent lead compounds were identified. N-n-dodecylnicotinium iodide (NDDNI) was found to be very potent …

The Earned Income Tax Credit: A Study Of Eligible Participants Vs. Non-Participants, Richard K. Caputo Jan 2006

The Earned Income Tax Credit: A Study Of Eligible Participants Vs. Non-Participants, Richard K. Caputo

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this study (N = 1,504) showed that about half the EITC eligible tax filers in 2001 did not file EITC tax returns and that differences between EITC tax filers and non-EITC tax filers varied by birth place, Food Stamp program participation, marital status, race, residence, sex, socioeconomic history, and worker classification. Findings suggested that the EITC is well targeted in the sense that economically marginalized groups are likely to participate and that increased outreach efforts are also needed to ensure greater participation among tax filers eligible for the EITC but who …

Professional Hope In Working With Older Adults, Terry Koenig, Richard Spano Jan 2006

Professional Hope In Working With Older Adults, Terry Koenig, Richard Spano

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Writings about hope within gerontological literature assume social workers already possess hope that they can use in their practice. The purpose of this article is to challenge this assumption and to examine ways in which social workers can sustain hope in personal life, in their agencies, and in the reform of larger social structures that impact older adults. The authors examine culture change in nursing homes as an emerging approach that can be more fully developed by applying the strengths perspective to interpersonal work with elders, agency change and broader structural change.

The Genetic Regulation Of The Response Of Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells To The Cytostatic Agent Hydroxyurea, Jeffrey Lynn Yates Jan 2006

The Genetic Regulation Of The Response Of Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells To The Cytostatic Agent Hydroxyurea, Jeffrey Lynn Yates

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Cellular proliferation is a key characteristic of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSC/HPCs) that allows for the production of all blood cell lineages during an individuals lifetime. While this feature of stem cells is strictly regulated during steadystate and stress hematopoiesis, it also contributes to the development of myeloproliferative disorders, such as chronic myelogenous leukemia, essential thrombocythemia, and polycythemia vera. It should come as no surprise then, that common treatments for these diseases often target the proliferative nature of the dysfunctional HSC/HPCs. Thus, the identification of molecular determinants of cell cycle regulation associated with these disorders could serve as targets …

Redevelopment And The Four Dimensions Of Class In Land Use, Audrey Mcfarlane Jan 2006

Redevelopment And The Four Dimensions Of Class In Land Use, Audrey Mcfarlane

All Faculty Scholarship

This essay begins with the proposition that the battle over the exercise of eminent domain as a question of the extent to which we accept local economic development as a proper exercise of local governmental authority. In light of the reality that economic development seeks to accomplish redevelopment to meet the social needs and consumption tastes of the affluent, the issue of local governments' autonomy to engage in redevelopment for economic development purposes is suffused with socioeconomic class struggles over land use. Therefore, the changes wrought by redevelopment challenge us to think and talk about class in ways for which …

Trehalose Uptake Through P2x7 Purinergic Channels Provides Dehydration Protection., Gloria Elliott, Jennifer Cusick, Xiang-Hong Liu, Michael Menze, Trudy Witt, Steven Hand, Mehmet Toner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The tetra-anionic form of ATP (ATP4-) is known to induce monovalent and divalent ion fluxes in cells that express purinergic P2X7 receptors (Steinberg et al., 1987; Sung et al., 1985), and with sustained application of ATP it has been shown that dyes as large as 831 daltons can permeate the cell membrane (Steinberg et al, 1987). The current study explores the kinetics of loading α,α-trehalose (342 daltons) into ATP stimulated J774.A1 cells, which are known to express the purinergic P2X7 receptor (Steinberg et al., 1987). Cells that were incubated at 37 ̊C in a 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) …

Counseling Patients Exposed To Ionizing Radiation During Pregnancy, Robert L. Brent Jan 2006

Counseling Patients Exposed To Ionizing Radiation During Pregnancy, Robert L. Brent

The Selected Works of Robert Brent

Health physicists and knowledgeable clinicians have the responsibility to counsel women of reproductive age about the reproductive risks of ionizing radiation exposure before conception or during pregnancy. It is important to realize that lay individuals have many misconceptions about the reproductive risks of ionizing radiation. Many patients who have already had or will undergo some type of radiological test are apprehensive about the reproductive and developmental risks of diagnostic radiological procedures. Epidemiological studies and animal studies indicate that high exposures of ionizing radiation can cause miscarriage, congenital malformations, growth retardation, stillbirth, and cancer. With the exception of cancer, there are …

Effects Associated With Dredging For Beach Renourishments On Reef Fish Communities Offshore Of Miami-Dade County, Florida:, Christian L. Avila Jan 2006

Effects Associated With Dredging For Beach Renourishments On Reef Fish Communities Offshore Of Miami-Dade County, Florida:, Christian L. Avila

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Beach erosion is an ongoing problem in South Florida. Beach replenishment has been the primary means of maintaining these economically important beaches, and dredging offshore sand deposits, adjacent to reef tracts, has been the pervasive method since the 1970's. Over the past ten years, greater attention has been paid to potential impacts dredging can have on adjacent reef communities, which has led to increased monitoring efforts. With the increase in monitoring efforts, scope has expanded from a strict focus on the benthic community to include the fish communities. This study evaluates the effects of dredging on reef fish communities associated …

Performance Efficacy Using A Comparison Of Commerical And In-House Y-Str Multiplex Systems For Operational Use, Kathleen Mayntz-Press

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is routine for the forensic scientist to obtain a genetic profile of an individual from DNA recovered from a biological stain deposited at a crime scene. In contrast, only a limited number of laboratories in the United States have the capability of performing Y-STR analysis in casework. In order to aid in facilitating the transfer of Y-STR technology to the crime laboratory community for operational use, a comparison between commercial products from three main vendors (Applied Biosystems AmpFLSTR Yfiler PCR Amplification Kit, Promega PowerPlex - Y System, Reliagene Y-PLEX 12) and two in-house Y-STR multiplexes (MPI and MPB) commenced. …
