A Comparison Of Reef Fish Assemblages On The East And West Sides Of Central Eleuthera, Bahamas, Robert B. Patterson, Lance K. B. Jordan, David R. Bryan, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Eleuthera is a long, narrow crescent-shaped Atlantic margin island on the eastern extremity of the Great Bahama Bank in the central Bahamas. It is 144 km long and less than 5 km at its greatest width. Fringing reefs with substantial vertical relief (to 5 m in depths of 6 m) are found approximately 500 m offshore on the eastern side of the island facing the Atlantic Ocean. The western side of the island has stretches of rock cliffs and large fallen boulders providing substrate with similar vertical relief. No open passes exist between the two sides of the island and …

Implications Of Natural Variation Of Fish Assemblages To Coral Reef Management, Lance K. B. Jordan, Richard E. Spieler Jan 2006

Implications Of Natural Variation Of Fish Assemblages To Coral Reef Management, Lance K. B. Jordan, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

In order to evaluate the impact of a planned beach renourishment project we obtained baseline data on hardbottom coral reef fish assemblages adjacent to the beach. During the summers of 2001 and 2003 we conducted 92 and 89 visual transect-counts, respectively, each 30x2x1m. Fish were recorded by species, abundance, and size class. Fish exhibited a 62.8% decrease in abundance between the 2001 and 2003 surveys. Juvenile Haemulon spp. (<5cm total length, TL) alone decreased 72.8% in abundance and, due to their predominance, primarily drove the decrease seen for total abundance. The second most abundant species Halichoeres bivittatus, also primarily juveniles (<5cm TL), contributed 8% of the total abundance and also showed a significant decrease between the 2001 and 2003 surveys. Even after removal of the two most abundant taxa, total abundance remained significantly lower the second survey year, suggesting the possibility of a community-wide decrease in abundance. However, the decrease between years was mainly due to a decrease in juveniles. When fish less than 5cm TL were removed from the dataset, no significant difference in abundance between years was detected. Species richness also declined significantly with fewer species noted in 2003 and eight fewer total species between years. Nonetheless, multivariate examination of assemblage structure did not indicate a difference between years. These results have important implications for determining potential anthropogenic change in fish assemblages (e.g. caused by beach renourishment).

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Weddings Through Media And Ritual: Analyzing Indian And North American Weddings, Erika Buckley Jan 2006

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Weddings Through Media And Ritual: Analyzing Indian And North American Weddings, Erika Buckley

McNair Scholars Journal

The wedding is one of the only rituals or events that many cultures of the world consistently have in common. Weddings are found in almost every society. A wedding can feed consumer appetites and the industry that supports it. Costs for the average United States wedding can range from $26,000 to $35,530 or more (“Cost of Weddings” 2006). The costs of Indian wedding ceremonies vary from $34,000 up to $2 million (Das 2005). Despite this large range the Indian wedding industry averages only $11billion annually while its American counterpart is a whopping $50 billion each year (“Cost of Weddings” 2006, …

Mechanisms Of Genotoxin-Induced Transcription And Hypermutation In P53, Barbara E. Wright, Jacqueline Reimers, Karen Schmidt, Evan Burkala, Ping Wei, Ping Wei Jan 2006

Mechanisms Of Genotoxin-Induced Transcription And Hypermutation In P53, Barbara E. Wright, Jacqueline Reimers, Karen Schmidt, Evan Burkala, Ping Wei, Ping Wei

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

It is widely assumed that genotoxin-induced damage (e.g., G-to-T transversions) to the tumor suppressor gene, p53, is a direct cause of cancer. However, genotoxins also induce the stress response, which upregulates p53 transcription and the formation of secondary structures from ssDNA. Since unpaired bases are thermodynamically unstable and intrinsically mutable, increased transcription could be the cause of hypermutation, and thus cancer. Support for this hypothesis has been obtained by analyzing 6662 mutations in all types of cancer compared to lung and colon cancers, using the p53 mutation database. The data suggest that genotoxins have two independent effects: first, they induce …

Occurrence, Persistence, And Expansion Of Saltcedar (Tamarix Spp.) Populations In The Great Plains Of Montana, Jason P. Sexton, Anna Sala, Kevin Murray Jan 2006

Occurrence, Persistence, And Expansion Of Saltcedar (Tamarix Spp.) Populations In The Great Plains Of Montana, Jason P. Sexton, Anna Sala, Kevin Murray

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Saltcedar (Tamarix spp.), a shrub native to Eurasia, is associated with major alterations to wetland and riparian systems in the southwestern United States. Since the 1960s saltcedar has been naturalized in northern states of the U.S. where its growth potential and impacts are not well known. Here, we describe the occurrence, age, size, and relative cover of saltcedar populations in several river basins in central eastern Montana, USA, to identify potential patterns of spread across the region and changes in individual populations as they age. Stands were aged according to the oldest saltcedar individuals and were sampled for dominant plant …

Northern Region Landbird Monitoring Program: A Usfs-University Of Montana Partnership Designed To Provide Both Short-Term And Long-Term Feedback For Land Managers, Richard L. Hutto, Skip Kowalski Jan 2006

Northern Region Landbird Monitoring Program: A Usfs-University Of Montana Partnership Designed To Provide Both Short-Term And Long-Term Feedback For Land Managers, Richard L. Hutto, Skip Kowalski

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The Northern Region Landbird Monitoring Program (NRLMP) began in 1990 as a cooperative effort between the United States Forest Service (USFS) and the University of Montana. The combination of a research-oriented perspective from the University and a management-needs perspective from the National Forests within the Northern Region led to the realization that landbirds as a group might serve as a powerful tool to address more widespread monitoring needs in the USFS Northern Region. The program quickly evolved from one that was put into place specifically to use federally earmarked dollars to address neotropical migratory bird conservation, into a more general …

Rare Plants Are Common Where You Find Them, Peter Lesica, Raymond Yurkewycz, Elizabeth E. Crone Jan 2006

Rare Plants Are Common Where You Find Them, Peter Lesica, Raymond Yurkewycz, Elizabeth E. Crone

University of Montana Herbarium Publications

Broad patterns in distribution and abundance can elucidate processes of evolution. A positive association between local abundance and the size of the geographic range has been demonstrated for closely related species across many taxa. This pattern is usually explained by assuming that species with smaller ranges are ecologically inferior (e.g., poor competitors or dispersers). Many areas of high endemism support local species that have evolved recently. The distribution of these neoendemics may reflect historical processes not accounted for by ecological, equilibrium hypotheses. We asked whether such traditional macroecological hypotheses also applied to the local abundance of seven narrowly endemic species …

Chemistry Faculty Research

1,1′-Diethyl-2,2′,3,3′,4,4′,5,5′-octamethylferrocene has been utilized as a one-electron donor in the synthesis of a tetracyanoethylene charge-transfer salt, [Fe(C5EtMe4)2]+[TCNE]−. Structural characterization shows that it adopts an arrangement of anions and cations completely different from the usual π stacking seen in analogous decamethylferrocenium compounds. The TCNE radical sits along side of the ferrocene, nearly perpendicular to the planes of the C5 rings. The nearly square geometry of the TCNE anion creates disorder over two orientations. [Fe(C5EtMe4)2]+[TCNE]− is a simple paramagnet exhibiting neither long-range …

Passive Stretching Decreases Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Expression In Skeletal Muscle And Is Dependent Upon Acetylcholine Receptor Activation, Nathan G. Peplinski, John M. Spitsbergen

Biological Sciences Faculty and Graduate Student Research

Motor neurons receive trophic support from the tissues they innervate. One molecule that is important for peripheral motor neurons is glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). We have previously reported that GDNF is regulated in an activity-dependent manner in skeletal muscle. For this study we examined the short-term effects of passive stretching on the expression of GDNF in skeletal muscle. Extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles were removed from 4 week old Sprague Dawley rats and placed in oxygenated tissue baths containing Ringer’s solution. Tissues were passively stretched for 4 hours while their contralateral counterparts remained in baths at resting tension. …

Understanding The Influence Of Rossby Waves On Surface Chlorophyll Concentrations In The North Atlantic Ocean, G. Charria, I. Dadou, P. Cipollini, M. Drévillon, P. De Mey, V. Garçon Jan 2006

Understanding The Influence Of Rossby Waves On Surface Chlorophyll Concentrations In The North Atlantic Ocean, G. Charria, I. Dadou, P. Cipollini, M. Drévillon, P. De Mey, V. Garçon

Journal of Marine Research

The variability (in space and time) of westward propagating Rossby waves is analyzed with a wavelet method between 10N and 40N in the North Atlantic Ocean using two remotely sensed data sets (Sea Level Anomalies – SLA and surface chlorophyll-a concentrations) in order to better understand the waves' characteristics and their impacts on the chlorophyll distribution. Signals with wavelengths between ∼ 500 km and ∼ 1000 km with ∼ 4- to ∼ 24-month periods were detected and identified as the first baroclinic mode of Rossby waves. The spatial and temporal information has also highlighted a particular situation in 1998 …

Simulation And Energy Partition Of The Flow Through Paso Galvarino, Chile, Michael W. Stacey, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson Jan 2006

Simulation And Energy Partition Of The Flow Through Paso Galvarino, Chile, Michael W. Stacey, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson

Journal of Marine Research

Paso Galvarino is a constriction in Seno Ventisquero, a tidally-energetic Chilean fjord. The pass is about 1500 m long and constricts in width by about 90 % near its sill, which has a depth of about 8 m. A laterally-averaged numerical model is compared to ADCP and backscatter observations of the hydraulic flow near the sill, during maximum flood, the slack tide after the flood, maximum ebb, and the slack tide after the ebb. The model is also used to examine how the energy flux into the fjord is partitioned in the region of the constriction. Energy is removed from …

The Evolution Of Density Currents And Nepheloid Bottom Layers In The Ross Sea (Antarctica), Giorgio Budillon, Ettore Salusti, Sergio Tucci

Journal of Marine Research

In this study we have analyzed the thermohaline, light transmission and particulate matter data, obtained in the western sector of the Ross Sea during the X Italian Expedition, for the purpose of investigating the evolution of the High Salinity Shelf Water in this area. In particular CTD data were used to estimate the baroclinic velocity field. Light transmission and total particulate matter data (from Niskin bottles mounted on a Carousel water sampler) were used to analyze the nepheloid layers and the evolution of the suspended sediments. This basin is characterized by a northward flow of very dense High Salinity Shelf …
