Sex Determination Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis Calurus) Using Dna Analysis And Morphometrics, Kara C. Donohue, Alfred M. Dufty Jr. Feb 2006

Sex Determination Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis Calurus) Using Dna Analysis And Morphometrics, Kara C. Donohue, Alfred M. Dufty Jr.

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Currently the sex of Red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) cannot be determined by in-hand methods. Males and females do not differ in plumage and overlap in size. During migration, we collected feather samples and morphological measurements from birds at four sites in the Western United States. Sex was determined for individual birds using sex-specific DNA markers and Polymerase Chain Reaction was used to identify these DNA markers. Through Discriminant Function Analysis, we created equations for determining the sex of Red-tailed hawks using in-hand measurements based on the DNA-determined sexes. We formed two equations, one for adults, which was 98% …

Duan's Fixed Point Theorem: Proof And Generalization, Martin Arkowitz Feb 2006

Duan's Fixed Point Theorem: Proof And Generalization, Martin Arkowitz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Let X be an H-space of the homotopy type of a connected, finite CW-complex, f : X→X any map and pk : X→X the kth power map. Duan proved that pkf : X → X has a fixed point if k ≥ 2. We give a new, short and elementary proof of this. We then use rational homotopy to generalize to spaces X whose rational cohomology is the tensor product of an exterior algebra on odd dimensional generators with the tensor product of truncated polynomial algebras on even dimensional generators. The role of the power map …

Height Distribution Of Birds Recorded By Collisions With Civil Aircraft, Richard A. Dolbeer Feb 2006

Height Distribution Of Birds Recorded By Collisions With Civil Aircraft, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The National Wildlife Strike Database for Civil Aviation in the United States contained 38,961 reports of aircraft collisions with birds (bird strikes) from 1990–2004 in which the report indicated the height above ground level (AGL). I analyzed these strike reports to determine the distribution of all strikes and those strikes causing substantial damage to aircraft by height. For the 26% of strikes above 500 feet (152 m) AGL (n=10,143), a simple negative exponential model, with height as the independent variable, explained 99% of the variation in number of bird strikes per 1,000-foot (305-m) interval. Strikes declined consistently by 32% every …

Total Plasma Protein And Renesting By Greater Sage-Grouse, Michael A. Gregg, Mike R. Dunbar, John A. Crawford, Michael D. Pope Feb 2006

Total Plasma Protein And Renesting By Greater Sage-Grouse, Michael A. Gregg, Mike R. Dunbar, John A. Crawford, Michael D. Pope

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) population declines have been attributed to reduced productivity. Although renesting by sage-grouse may contribute significantly to annual productivity during some years, little information is available on this aspect of sage-grouse reproductive ecology. We investigated the relationship between total plasma protein, age of hen, time of first nest initiation, and time of first nest loss on occurrence of renesting. We captured, assigned age, extracted blood, and radiomarked prelaying, female sage-grouse on 4 study areas during 1999–2004. We monitored radiomarked females from mid-April through June to identify period of nest initiation (early, mid, or late), nest …

Short-Pulse Laser Propagation Through Tissue Medium For Tumor Detection, Gopalendu Pal, Kunal Mitra, Tuan Vo-Dinh Feb 2006

Short-Pulse Laser Propagation Through Tissue Medium For Tumor Detection, Gopalendu Pal, Kunal Mitra, Tuan Vo-Dinh

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to perform a comprehensive experimental and numerical analysis of the short pulse laser interaction with tissue medium with the goal of tumor / cancer diagnostics. For short pulse laser source, the shape of output signal is a function of the optical properties of the medium and hence the scattered temporal optical signal helps in understanding of the medium characteristics. Initially experiments are performed on tissue phantoms imbedded with inhomogeneities in order to optimize the time-resolved optical detection scheme. Both the temporal and the spatial profiles of the scattered reflected and transmitted optical signals are …

Induction Of Temperate Cyanophage As-1 By Heavy Metal - Copper, Lee H. Lee, Doris Lui, Patricia J. Platner, Shi Fang Hsu, Tin Chun Chu, John J. Gaynor, Quinn C. Vega, Bonnie K. Lustigman Feb 2006

Induction Of Temperate Cyanophage As-1 By Heavy Metal - Copper, Lee H. Lee, Doris Lui, Patricia J. Platner, Shi Fang Hsu, Tin Chun Chu, John J. Gaynor, Quinn C. Vega, Bonnie K. Lustigman

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: It has been reported that some marine cyanophage are temperate and can be induced from a lysogenic phase to a lytic phase by different agents such as heavy metals. However, to date no significant reports have focused on the temperate nature of freshwater cyanophage/cyanobacteria. Previous experiments with cyanophage AS-1 and cyanobacteria Anacystis nidulans have provided some evidence that AS-1 may have a lysogenic life cycle in addition to the characterized lytic cycle. Results: In this study, the possible temperate A. nidulans was treated with different concentrations of heavy metal-copper. CuSO4 with concentrations of 3.1 × 10-3 M, 3.1 …

Oaz Regulates Bone Morphogenetic Protein Signaling Through Smad6 Activation, Manching Ku, Shavonne Howard, Weihua Ni, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata Feb 2006

Oaz Regulates Bone Morphogenetic Protein Signaling Through Smad6 Activation, Manching Ku, Shavonne Howard, Weihua Ni, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata

Biology

The intensity and duration of activation of a signal transduction system are important determinants of the specificity of the cellular response to the stimulus. It is unclear how different cells can generate a signal of varying intensity and duration in response to the same cytokine. We investigated the role of the transcriptional activator and Smad1/4 cofactor OAZ in regulating bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling. We demonstrate that upon BMP4 stimulation, an OAZ-Smad1/4 complex binds to and activates the gene encoding Smad6, a specific inhibitor of the BMP pathway. Removal of endogenous OAZ from pluripotent embryonal carcinoma cells prevents the induction …
