Ampk Regulation Of Mouse Oocyte Meiotic Resumption In Vitro, Jing Chen, Emma R. Hudson, Maggie M. Chi, Aimee S. Chang, Kelle H. Moley, D. Grahame Hardie, Stephen M. Downs

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

We have previously shown that the adenosine analog 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-β-d-ribofuranoside (AICAR), an activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), stimulates an increase in AMPK activity and induces meiotic resumption in mouse oocytes [Downs, S.M., Hudson, E.R., Hardie, D.G., 2002. A potential role for AMP-activated protein kinase in meiotic induction in mouse oocytes. Dev. Biol, 245, 200–212]. The present study was carried out to better define a causative role for AMPK in oocyte meiotic maturation. When microinjected with a constitutively active AMPK, about 20% of mouse oocytes maintained in meiotic arrest with dibutyryl cAMP (dbcAMP) were stimulated to undergo germinal vesicle breakdown (GVB), …

Holistic Health: Does It Really Include Mental Health?, Kimberly K. Mcclanahan, Marlene B. Huff, Hatim A. Omar Mar 2006

Holistic Health: Does It Really Include Mental Health?, Kimberly K. Mcclanahan, Marlene B. Huff, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Holistic health, incorporating mind and body as equally important and unified components of health, is a concept utilized in some health care arenas in the United States (U.S.) over the past 30 years. However, in the U.S., mental health is not seen as conceptually integral to physical health and, thus, holistic health cannot be realized until the historical concept of mind-body dualism, continuing stigma regarding mental illness, lack of mental health parity in insurance, and inaccurate public perceptions regarding mental illness are adequately addressed and resolved. Until then, mental and physical health will continue to be viewed as disparate entities …

Rapid, Sequence-Specific Detection Of Unpurified Pcr Amplicons Via A Reusable, Electrochemical Sensor, Rebecca Lai, Eric T. Hagally, Sang-Ho Lee, H. T. Soh, Kevin W. Plaxco, Alan J. Heeger Mar 2006

Rapid, Sequence-Specific Detection Of Unpurified Pcr Amplicons Via A Reusable, Electrochemical Sensor, Rebecca Lai, Eric T. Hagally, Sang-Ho Lee, H. T. Soh, Kevin W. Plaxco, Alan J. Heeger

Rebecca Lai Publications

We report an electrochemical method for the sequence-specific detection of unpurified amplification products of the gyrB gene of Salmonella typhimurium. Using an asymmetric PCR and the electrochemical E-DNA detection scheme, single-stranded amplicons were produced from as few as 90 gene copies and, without subsequent purification, rapidly identified. The detection is specific; the sensor does not respond when challenged with control oligonucleotides based on the gyrB genes of either Escherichia coli or various Shigella species. In contrast to existing sequence-specific optical- and capillary electrophoresis- based detection methods, the E-DNA sensor is fully electronic and requires neither cumbersome, expensive optics nor …

Modeling Study To Quantify The Benefits Of Groundwater Contaminant Source Remediation, David E. Wagner Mar 2006

Modeling Study To Quantify The Benefits Of Groundwater Contaminant Source Remediation, David E. Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to quantify the benefits of groundwater contaminant source remediation by using a model to simulate how reduction of source mass was related to reduction of contaminant concentration at a receptor. This thesis sought to answer three research questions: (1) how are contaminant source mass reduction and reduction of mass flux leaving the source-zone related; (2) how can we quantify the effect of the important natural attenuation processes that act upon the dissolved contaminant as it travels from the source zone to downgradient receptors, and (3) under specified site conditions, what is the maximum contaminant …

Asymptotic Stability Of A Fluid-Structure Semigroup, George Avalos Mar 2006

Asymptotic Stability Of A Fluid-Structure Semigroup, George Avalos

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The strong stability problem for a fluid-structure interactive partial differential equation (PDE) is considered. The PDE comprises a coupling of the linearized Stokes equations to the classical system of elasticity, with the coupling occurring on the boundary interface between the fluid and solid media. It is now known that this PDE may be modeled by a $C_{0}$-semigroup of contractions on an appropriate Hilbert space. However, because of the nature of the unbounded coupling between fluid and structure, the resolvent of the semigroup generator will \emph{not} be a compact operator. In consequence, the classical solution to the stability problem, by means …

Parowan Pottery And Fremont Complexity: Late Formative Ceramic Production And Exchange, Christopher N. Watkins Mar 2006

Parowan Pottery And Fremont Complexity: Late Formative Ceramic Production And Exchange, Christopher N. Watkins

Theses and Dissertations

The Fremont, a Formative culture located in the Eastern Great Basin and Colorado Plateau, have been primarily studied from an ecological perspective. This research addresses issues that are not ecological, the organization of production and exchange of ceramic vessels. Following criteria suggested by Brown et al. (1990), I argue that the following need to be addressed prior to a useful discussion of intergroup trade: the source of the raw materials of the exchanged objects, the associated pattern of distribution, the relative value of the objects, and their context of manufacture, use, and consumption. I specifically address three of these issues …

The Effects Of Ability Homophily On Individual Performance, Michael J. Gray Mar 2006

The Effects Of Ability Homophily On Individual Performance, Michael J. Gray

Theses and Dissertations

Homophily is the sociological term for a principle that is easily observed and understood: similar people tend to associate with one another (or the well-known saying "Birds of a feather flock together"). Homophily creates divides among people with numerous demographic characteristics and causes people to surround themselves with others who are similar to themselves (McPherson et al., 2001). Race and ethnicity have the greatest influence on relationship choices followed by age, religion, education, occupation, and gender (McPherson et al., 2001). While studies of homophily of race and gender are quite common, few studies have examined homophily based on instrumental attributes …

Multiple Breeding Strategies In The Swift Fox, Vulpes Velox, Ann M. Kitchen, Eric M. Gese, Lisette P. Waits, Seija M. Karki, Edward R. Schauster Mar 2006

Multiple Breeding Strategies In The Swift Fox, Vulpes Velox, Ann M. Kitchen, Eric M. Gese, Lisette P. Waits, Seija M. Karki, Edward R. Schauster

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Little is known of the mating system of the swift fox or how it compares to other socially monogamous mammals. In a 4-year study of 188 swift foxes, we used microsatellite analysis at 11 loci along with spatial observations to investigate swift fox mating strategies. The mating strategies used by swift foxes were highly diverse. Previous field observations have indicated that the swift fox is socially monogamous. However, we found that extrapair mating was a common breeding strategy; 52% of offspring were sired by a male that was not the mate of their mother. There was also variation in the …

Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Immediate-Early Protein (Bicp0) Interacts With The Histone Acetyltransferase P300, Which Stimulates Productive Infection And Gc Promoter Activity, Yange Zhang, Yunquan Jiang, Vicki Geiser, Joe Zhou, Clinton J. Jones Mar 2006

Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Immediate-Early Protein (Bicp0) Interacts With The Histone Acetyltransferase P300, Which Stimulates Productive Infection And Gc Promoter Activity, Yange Zhang, Yunquan Jiang, Vicki Geiser, Joe Zhou, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The immediate-early protein, bICP0, of Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) transactivates viral promoters and stimulates productive infection. bICP0 is expressed constitutively during productive infection, as its gene contains an immediate- early and an early promoter. Like other ICP0 homologues encoded by members of the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, bICP0 contains a zinc RING finger located near its N terminus. Mutations that disrupt the bICP0 zinc RING finger impair its ability to activate transcription, stimulate productive infection, inhibit interferon-dependent transcription in certain cell types and regulate subnuclear localization. bICP0 also interacts with a cellular chromatin-remodeling enzyme, histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1), and can relieve …

Never Get Out'a The Boat: Stenberg V. Carhart And The Future Of American Law, Michael Scaperlanda, John Breen Mar 2006

Never Get Out'a The Boat: Stenberg V. Carhart And The Future Of American Law, Michael Scaperlanda, John Breen

ExpressO

In this essay, the haunting scenes from the film Apocalypse Now serve as the backdrop for an examination of Stenberg v. Carhart and the meaning that this case holds for the future of American law and culture.

The movie tells the story of Captain Benjamin Willard, a special forces officer in Vietnam who travels up-river on a patrol boat in search of a renegade American colonel whom Willard has been ordered to “terminate.” The major thematic concerns of the film are morality, violence, candor, and the tenuous nature of civilization. Indeed, life on board the boat, such as it is, …

Piracy, Biopiracy And Borrowing: Culture, Cultural Heritage And The Globalization Of Intellectual Property, Olufunmilayo B. Arewa

ExpressO

Discussions of both “piracy” and “biopiracy” often start from questionable assumptions about the nature of borrowing. In addition, legal treatment of local or traditional knowledge is often based on inadequate conceptions of the nature of culture and borrowing among cultures. Uses of local or traditional knowledge are embedded within an at times contentious discourse between North and South and have led to accusations of misappropriation, exploitation and “biopiracy.” This discourse reflects historical hierarchies of culture and power that continue to exert a strong influence on discourse, policy and the shape of legal doctrine. Many countries in the South lack the …

Distinct Ceramide Synthases Regulate Polarized Growth In The Filamentous Fungus Aspergillus NidulansD, Shaojie Li, Liangcheng Du, Gary Yuen, Steven D. Harris Mar 2006

Distinct Ceramide Synthases Regulate Polarized Growth In The Filamentous Fungus Aspergillus NidulansD, Shaojie Li, Liangcheng Du, Gary Yuen, Steven D. Harris

Liangcheng Du Publications

In filamentous fungi, the stabilization of a polarity axis is likely to be a pivotal event underlying the emergence of a germ tube from a germinating spore. Recent results implicate the polarisome in this process and also suggest that it requires localized membrane organization. Here, we employ a chemical genetic approach to demonstrate that ceramide synthesis is necessary for the formation of a stable polarity axis in the model fungus Aspergillus nidulans. We demonstrate that a novel compound (HSAF) produced by a bacterial biocontrol agent disrupts polarized growth and leads to loss of membrane organization and formin localization at …

Racially-Tailored’ Medicine Unraveled, Sharona Hoffman Mar 2006

Racially-Tailored’ Medicine Unraveled, Sharona Hoffman

Faculty Publications

In June 2005, the FDA approved BiDil, a heart failure medication that is labeled for use only by African-Americans and thus is the first treatment of its kind. The drug likely portends a future of growing interest in "race-based" medicine. This phenomenon is emerging at the same time that scientists, in light of the Human Genome Project, are reaching an understanding that "race" has no biological meaning, and consequently, "racially-tailored" medicine is both puzzling and troubling.

This Article explores the reasons for the new focus on "racial-profiling" in medicine. It analyzes the risks and dangers of this approach, including medical …
