The Overlapping Magisteria Of Law And Science: When Litigation And Science Collide, William G. Childs Mar 2006

The Overlapping Magisteria Of Law And Science: When Litigation And Science Collide, William G. Childs

ExpressO

The Supreme Court’s 1993 decision in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals transformed courts’ evaluation of expert testimony. Many courts, applying Daubert, focus extensively on whether the purported expert’s methodology has been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

This focus on peer review results in two unintended consequences that have triggered criticism: litigation-driven scholarship and litigants taking discovery into the peer review process. Critics contend that litigation-driven scholarship is irredeemably biased and that peer review discovery is too often an effort to intimidate scholars from speaking on subjects of public concern.

In this Article, I explore these phenomena and the criticisms of …

Final Report On The Cleanup Of Livermore Lab's Site 300 "Pit 7 Complex", Peter Strauss, Marylia Kelley

Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment (CAREs)

"Tri-Valley CAREs (TVC) has been involved in the Pit 7 remediation process from the time it was first identified in the Superfund process in the early 1990s. the group has offered technical and community comments at each step in the process. TVC has made sure that its members were brought up to speed and could participate in the public meetings that were periodically held by LLNL/DOE. Below, we have provided a brief description of these pits and the risk that they pose, and the current status of the pits. These are followed by a series of Attachments, which give a …

A Comparative Study Of Monoclonal Antibodies (Mabs) Purified From Cell Culture Supernatant On Edtpa-Modified Zirconia Beads And Protein A-Hyper D Support, Anuradha Subramanian, Blanca Martinez, Jill Holm, Peter W. Carr, Clayton V. Mcneff Mar 2006

A Comparative Study Of Monoclonal Antibodies (Mabs) Purified From Cell Culture Supernatant On Edtpa-Modified Zirconia Beads And Protein A-Hyper D Support, Anuradha Subramanian, Blanca Martinez, Jill Holm, Peter W. Carr, Clayton V. Mcneff

Papers in Biotechnology

Colloidal zirconia was spray dried to yield zirconia particles, which were further modified with N, N, N0, N0- Ethylenediamine tetra methylenephosphonic acid (EDTPA) to yield a sup-port for use in bioseparations. EDTPA modified zirconia particles will be further referred to as, r_PEZ. Cell culture supernatants rich in monoclonal antibody (Mab) subtypes IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, and IgG3 were chromatographed on a r_PEZ column, and on a protein A-hyper D col-umn that was purchased commercially. All Mab subtypes bound to r_PEZ and process yields in the range of 88 to 99% were obtained. The purity of the Mab products were ascertained by …

Brand, Holger Hennig, Lothar Rink, Petra Koritke, Nadine Wittkopf, David L. Williams, Antje Mueller

ETSU Faculty Works

Background: β-1→3-D-glucans represent a pathogen-associated molecular pattern and are able to modify biological responses. Employing a comprehensive methodological approach, the aim of our in vitro study was to elucidate novel molecular and cellular mechanisms of human peripheral blood immune cells mediated by a fungal β-1→3-D-glucan, i.e. glucan phosphate, in the presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1). Results: Despite an activation of nuclear factor (NF)κB, NFinterleukin(IL)-6 and NFAT similar to LPS or TSST-1, we observed no significant production of IL-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor α or interferon γ induced by glucan phosphate. Glucan phosphate-treated leukocytes induced …

A Conceptual Plan For The Detroit Book And Tower Building: Exploration Of The Conjunction Of Historic Preservation And Sustainable Design Concepts, Chi-Ying Luo Mar 2006

A Conceptual Plan For The Detroit Book And Tower Building: Exploration Of The Conjunction Of Historic Preservation And Sustainable Design Concepts, Chi-Ying Luo

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This conceptual project generated an adaptive reuse proposal for the Book and Tower Building in a registered historic district. Louis Kamper designed the thirteen-story Book Building in 1917, in the Beaux Arts style, to create elite shops and offices. In 1926 the thirty-six-story Tower Building extended the leaseable space. This proposal preserved and rehabilitated the historic features in the lobby area and renovated the retail spaces. An Asian Café was designed to contrast, but blend with, the Beaux Arts style. The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation were followed in the lobby area so as to make the renovation …

Interactions Between N- And C-Terminal Domains Of The Saccharomyces Cerevisiae High-Mobility Group Protein Hmo1 Are Required For Dna Bending, Kevin T. Bauerle, Edwin Kamau, Anne Grove Mar 2006

Interactions Between N- And C-Terminal Domains Of The Saccharomyces Cerevisiae High-Mobility Group Protein Hmo1 Are Required For Dna Bending, Kevin T. Bauerle, Edwin Kamau, Anne Grove

Faculty Publications

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae high-mobility group protein HMO1 is composed of two DNA-binding domains termed box A and box B, of which only box B is predicted to adopt a HMG fold, and a lysine-rich C-terminal extension. To assess the interaction between individual domains and their contribution to DNA binding, several HMO1 variants were analyzed. Using circular dichroism spectroscopy, thermal stability was measured. While the melting temperatures of HMO1-boxA and HMO1-boxB are 57.2 and 47.2 °C, respectively, HMO1-boxBC, containing box B and the entire C-terminal tail, melts at 46.1 °C, suggesting little interaction between box B and the tail. In contrast, …

Movement Of Cicindela Hirticollis Say Larvae In Response To Moisture And Flooding, Mathew L. Brust, William Wyatt Hoback, Kerri Farnsworth Skinner, Charles Barry Knisley

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The larvae of the tiger beetle, Cicindela hirticollis Say, inhabit sandy shoreline areas that flood periodically. This species has declined over much of its range and at least one subspecies is near extinction, possibly as a result of human alteration of waterways. In addition to physiological tolerance for anoxia, the larvae have physical and behavioral adaptations to avoid drowning. We hypothesized that C. hirticollis larvae would exhibit behavioral responses to soil moisture change and flooding because, unlike most other tiger beetles, they frequently relocate their burrows. Our laboratory studies demonstrated that larvae select surface soil moisture levels of 7–50% saturation …

Ranking-Based Methods For Gene Selection In Microarray Data, Li Chen Mar 2006

Ranking-Based Methods For Gene Selection In Microarray Data, Li Chen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

DNA microarrays have been used for the purpose of monitoring expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously and identifying those genes that are differentially expressed. One of the major goals of microarray data analysis is the detection of differentially expressed genes across two kinds of tissue samples or samples obtained under two experimental conditions. A large number of gene detection methods have been developed and most of them are based on statistical analysis. However the statistical analysis methods have the limitations due to the small sample size and unknown distribution and error structure of microarray data. In this thesis, a …

Reproductive Cloning Case:How Law And Bioethics Measure A Compelling Governmental Interest, Paulo Farias Mar 2006

Reproductive Cloning Case:How Law And Bioethics Measure A Compelling Governmental Interest, Paulo Farias

ExpressO

Law and Bioethics should be partners in developing public policies to deal with cloning. Law as a Government tool must enforce decisions made in Bioethics Commissions such as the NBAC and the President’s Council, because the Commissions’ discussions offer an array of principles to help legislators and policy makers understand how to find compelling governmental interests. For instance, human dignity is not a vague and obscure legal or bioethical concept. In truth, it is a way of connecting Law and Bioethics to answer questions such as the relationship between the legal protection of procreation and the Report of the President’s …

Detecting Pulsatile Hormone Secretion Events: A Bayesian Approach, Tim Johnson Mar 2006

Detecting Pulsatile Hormone Secretion Events: A Bayesian Approach, Tim Johnson

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Many challenges arise in the analysis of pulsatile, or episodic, hormone concentration time series data. Among these challenges is the determination of the number and location of pulsatile events and the discrimination of events from noise. Analyses of these data are typically performed in two stages. In the first stage, the number and approximate location of the pulses are determined. In the second stage, a model (typically a deconvolution model) is fit to the data conditional on the number of pulses. Any error made in the first stage is carried over to the second stage. Furthermore, current methods, except two, …
