Iron Troikas: The New Threat From The East, Richard J. Krickus Dr.
Iron Troikas: The New Threat From The East, Richard J. Krickus Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
There has been widespread discussion of Russia's efforts to exploit its energy assets to influence developments in Ukraine; specifically, to put pressure on the leaders of the Orange Revolution who have adopted a Western orientation, rather than one toward the East—Russia. The author explains how the Russian leadership has exploited its energy assets to advance its security interests in the vital East Baltic Sea Region, particularly Poland and the Baltic countries. This triad of power is comprised of former members of the military and security service—the siloviki; economic warlords, members of organized crime, and rogue military personnel; and "local elites" …

The Role Of Cinnamon – Oil On Renal Tissue Of Hamster Following Alloxan – Induced Diabetes . Histochemical Approach, Mahera N. Al - Shaikh
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
SUMMARY: Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by abnormalities in carbohydrate ,protein , and lipid metabolism ,which is due either to insulin production or action . Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness , kidney disorders , disease of small blood vessels ……………and various other malfunctions. So the AIM: of this study is to investigate the effect of cinnamon oil as a natural source of a wide scale of antioxidants on prevention and treatment of oxidative stress in alloxan – induced diabetic animals , through biochemical and histochemical studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS : Thirty – five hamsters …

The Prognostic Role Of (Cd34) In The Angiogenesis Of Endometrial Adenocarcinoma, Lubab Fadhil Talal
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Tumor angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and metastases. Recently ,studies showed that microvessel density (MVD),a measure of tumor angiogenesis has found to have a prognostic significance for predicting metastases and survival in endometrial adenocarcinoma and identifying patients at high risk for recurrences . The aim of this study is to understand the correlation between the MVD and various clinicopathological factors in endometrial adenocarcinoma in order to evaluate the role of angiogenesis in the assessment of the biological behavior of endometrial adenocarcinoma and to prove that MVD can be used as a valuable prognostic factor and can detect …

Postcolonial Herstory: The Novels Of Assia Djebar (Algeria) And Oksana Zabuzhko (Ukraine): A Comparative Analysis, Oksana Lutsyshyna
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work is a comparative analysis of the works of the Ukrainian author Oksana Zabuzhko (Field Work in Ukrainian Sex) and the Algerian writer Assia Djebar (Women of Algiers in Their Apartment). Although the lives of Algerian and Ukrainian women were shaped by different historical and social forces, discourses and traditions, common themes exist in their writings because of their common postcolonial background. Both authors examine the relations of women to history in the postcolonial setting, the problem of inscribing women into history, and the double oppression women experienced during colonial times (as colonized subjects and as gendered subjects).

Review Of Evidence For Anthropogenic Radioactivity At The Industrial Excess Landfill, Uniontown, Ohio, Concerned Citizens Of Lake Township, Michael E. Ketterer Ph.D., Mark Baskaran Ph.D.
Concerned Citizens of Lake Township (CCLT)
This report considers the following two questions concerning the Industrial Excess Landfill (IEL): 1) What evidence exists for the presence of “anthropogenic radioactivity” in the IEL, its surface soils, and the groundwater in the vicinity of the site? and 2) Have the previous environmental sampling and analysis efforts, conducted by USEPA and Ohio EPA, been appropriately designed and conducted so that best available methodology, maximally protective of the environment and human health, has been used to detect any potential anthropogenic radioactivity?
This research was completed money allocated during Round 4 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund) …

Optimizing Biofuel Cell Performance Using A Targeted Mixed Mediator Combination, Jason C. Klar
Optimizing Biofuel Cell Performance Using A Targeted Mixed Mediator Combination, Jason C. Klar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A study of how mediators interact with the catabolic pathways of microbes was undertaken with a view towards improving the performance of microbial fuel cells. The use of mediators is known to improve the power density in microbial fuel cells, but this work suggests that no single mediator is ideally suited to the task. Instead, a carefully selected mixture of two targeted mediators (Methylene Blue and Neutral Red) might be optimal. To test this hypothesis, a yeast-catalyzed microbial fuel cell was built and empirically evaluated under different mediation conditions while keeping all other parameters constant. The results clearly show that …

Who’S In And Who’S Out? Can India’S Answer Help Us Determine Who Qualifies For Affirmative Action? , Sean A. Pager
Who’S In And Who’S Out? Can India’S Answer Help Us Determine Who Qualifies For Affirmative Action? , Sean A. Pager
ExpressO
Who should be the beneficiaries of racially targeted affirmative action? In its Croson decision, the Supreme Court answered part of the “Who Question” when it conditioned affirmative action eligibility on underrepresentation. What the Court did not tell us was underrepresentation of whom? The Court thus instructs us to select beneficiary groups by counting heads, but leaves open which heads get counted where and what categories to use.
By artificially separating what are necessarily related inquiries, the Court left a definitional lacuna that lower courts have struggled to fill. Such definitional issues matter because they often determine who benefits from affirmative …

Gas Chromatography: Mass Spectrometry Of Chemical Agents And Related Interferents, Lailiang Zhai
Gas Chromatography: Mass Spectrometry Of Chemical Agents And Related Interferents, Lailiang Zhai
Theses and Dissertations
One of the main problems encountered in chemical analysis operations in the field is collecting sufficient sample from the source and transferring that sample to the measurement instrument for fast separation and identification. I have been involved in developing a field-portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system with solid phase microextraction (SPME) sampling for point detection of chemical agents. The objective is to minimize the analysis time between sampling and detection of a potential chemical threat. SPME offers a convenient means for sampling gaseous and liquid samples, concentrating the analytes, and transferring the analytes to the injection port of a GC …
Use Of A Modified Zirconia Support In The Separation Of Immunoproteins, Anuradha Subramanian, Sabyasachi Sarkar
Use Of A Modified Zirconia Support In The Separation Of Immunoproteins, Anuradha Subramanian, Sabyasachi Sarkar
Papers in Biotechnology
Zirconia beads (25–38 μm in diameter) were modified with N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid to generate a zirconia based pseudoaffinity support, further referred to as r_PEZ. The influence of pH, salt concentration and temperature on the binding of human immunoglobulin G (hIgG) to r_PEZ was studied. Temperature had no significant impact on the maximum binding capacity (Qmax), and the equilibrium-binding constant (Kd), whereas pH and the salt concentration had a noticeable impact on both Qmax and Kd. The Qmax value of 55 mg hIgG/ml of bead was obtained at a pH of 5.5 and found to decrease with an increase of pH. The …
