Systematics And Emerging Infectious Diseases: From Management To Solution, Daniel R. Brooks, Eric P. Hoberg Apr 2006

Systematics And Emerging Infectious Diseases: From Management To Solution, Daniel R. Brooks, Eric P. Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The crisis of emerging infectious disease stems from the absence of comprehensive taxonomic inventories of the world's parasites, which includes the world's pathogens. Recent technological developments raise hopes that the global inventory of species, including potential pathogens, can be accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner. The phylogenetics revolution initiated by systematists provides a means by which information about pathogen transmission dynamics can be placed in a predictive framework. Increasingly, that information is widely available in digital form on the internet. Systematic biology is well positioned to play a crucial role in efforts to be proactive in the arena of …

Data was collected from 74 students enrolled in one of four majors in music; music education, music therapy, instrumental performance and jazz performance, as assessed by View: An Assessment of problem solving style, which included 34 items defining problem-solving style across three dimensions including Orientation to Change (OC), Manner of Processing (MP), and Ways of Deciding (WD) scales. Subjects also provided demographic information concerning their declared major, preferred musical career, and level of education. Significant differences were found between the four groups on …

Information, Litigation, And Common Law Evolution, Keith N. Hylton Apr 2006

Information, Litigation, And Common Law Evolution, Keith N. Hylton

Faculty Scholarship

It is common in the legal academy to describe judicial decision trends leading to new common law rules as resulting from conscious judicial effort. Evolutionary models of litigation, in contrast, treat common law as resulting from pressure applied by litigants. One apparent difficulty in the theory of litigation is explaining how trends in judicial decisions favoring one litigant, and biasing the legal standard, could occur. This article presents a model in which an apparent bias in the legal standard can occur in the absence of any effort toward this end on the part of judges. Trends can develop favoring the …

Analysis Of Factors Affecting Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) Abundance In Gull Lake, Michigan, Ryan P. Miller

Masters Theses

Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) proliferation has become a serious problem in the Great Lakes Basin. This study uses bathymetry, vegetation distribution, and substratum data to assess their relationship with zebra mussel measurements in Gull Lake, Michigan. Different statistical tests were performed in order to investigate the relationship between the variables and to infer any significance among the variables in relation to zebra mussel abundance. Dreissena polymorpha data include 16 sites on Gull Lake, collected in July of 1999. Vegetation, substratum, and bathymetric datasets were obtained and analyzed by using Geographic Information Science (GIS) techniques.

Bionomics Of Larvae Of Parelaphostrongylus Odocoilei (Nematoda: Protostrongylidae) In Experimentally Infected Gastropod Intermediate Hosts, Emily J. Jenkins, S. J. Kutz, Eric P. Hoberg, L. Polley

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei is a protostrongylid parasite that has recently been recognized at several locations in sub-Arctic, but not Arctic, North America. We investigated factors that may determine the distribution of P. odocoilei, including suitable gastropod intermediate hosts, temperature requirements for larval development in gastropods, and larval emergence facilitating overwinter transmission. We collected and experimentally infected gastropods from a site in the sub- Arctic where P. odocoilei is at the northern limit of its distribution. Deroceras laeve, Catinella sp., and Euconulus cf. fulvus, but not members of the Pupillidae, were suitable intermediate hosts. We describe bionomics of larvae …

The Effect Of Music On The Human Body And Mind, Dawn Kent

Senior Honors Theses

Music has a vast influence over the nations and peoples on this planet. It has been used in every culture, and is often connected with anxiolytic and analgesic properties. Today it is used in many hospitals to help patients relax and help relieve or ease pain, confusion and anxiety. Music is also commonly used in counseling. Music therapy techniques may include guided listening or improvisational playing and are used within the context of many theories, and for many types of mental disorders, from depression to schizophrenia. Many of the healing qualities of music in counseling are connected to its use …

Northern Saw-Whet Owl Summary And Comparisons Of Camp Hydaway And Surrounding Virginia Coastal Plains And Mountain Regions, Tanner Eiden Apr 2006

Northern Saw-Whet Owl Summary And Comparisons Of Camp Hydaway And Surrounding Virginia Coastal Plains And Mountain Regions, Tanner Eiden

Senior Honors Theses

Migrating Northern Saw-whet Owls were captured and banded at a site in the Virginia Piedmont in the fall of 2005, and the results were compared with the results of banding from the previous three years. The results were also compared to similar efforts to monitor migration that were made on the coastal plains and the mountain regions of Virginia in these same years. Migration volume was higher in the mountains compared to the piedmont and coast, and the mountains experienced the earliest migration peak, followed by the piedmont, and then the coastal plain. There was not a significant difference between …

Modeling Of Coupled-Tank System Using Fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno Model, Aries Subiantoro Apr 2006

Modeling Of Coupled-Tank System Using Fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno Model, Aries Subiantoro

Makara Journal of Technology

Modeling of Coupled-Tank System Using Fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno Model. This paper describes modeling of coupledtank system based on data measurement using fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model. The fuzzy clustering method of Gustafson- Kessel algorithm is used to classify input-output data into several clusters based on distance similarity of a member of input-output data from center of cluster. The formed clusters are projected orthonormally into each linguistic variables of premise part to determine membership function of fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model. By estimating data in each cluster, the consequent parameters of fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model are calculated using weighted least-squares method. The resulted fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model is …

Temperature Tolerance In Crustaceans: Critical Temperatures And The Heart, Lindsay Haupt (Murray-Miller) Apr 2006

Temperature Tolerance In Crustaceans: Critical Temperatures And The Heart, Lindsay Haupt (Murray-Miller)

All Theses And Dissertations

At certain upper and lower threshold temperatures (critical temperatures (Tc) crustaceans switch to anaerobic metabolism despite sufficient oxygen availability in the environment. I tested the hypothesis that failure of the heart at critical temperatures leads to insufficient oxygen delivery and subsequent anaerobiosis in peripheral tissues.

I exposed rock crabs, Cancer irroratus, as whole animals, and their buffer-perfused semi-isolated hearts to a progressive temperature increase, while monitoring heart rate and lactate accumulation. The whole animals heart rate increased with temperature following a Q10 of 2.8. An abrupt decline in heart rate occurred at 25°C and lactate accumulation occurred between …

The Web Of Relations: Thinking About Physicians And Patients, Ellen Wright Clayton Apr 2006

The Web Of Relations: Thinking About Physicians And Patients, Ellen Wright Clayton

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Like the other contributors to this symposium, I owe a profound debt to Jay Katz for his intellectual rigor, his gentle but firm Socratic pedagogy, and his unparalleled generosity of time and friendship. I first met Jay during my last year of law school when, at the urging of friends, I enrolled in his seminar on informed consent. By that time, he had collected most of the materials on which he based his important book. Not surprisingly, a single semester could not contain all of that material, so many of us continued on into the second semester. During that time …

Time Constraints Mediate Predator-Induced Plasticity In Immune Function, Condition, And Life History, Robby Stoks, Marjan De Block, Stefanie Slos, Wendy Van Doorslaer, Jens Rolff Apr 2006

Time Constraints Mediate Predator-Induced Plasticity In Immune Function, Condition, And Life History, Robby Stoks, Marjan De Block, Stefanie Slos, Wendy Van Doorslaer, Jens Rolff

Dartmouth Scholarship

The simultaneous presence of predators and a limited time for development imposes a conflict: accelerating growth under time constraints comes at the cost of higher predation risk mediated by increased foraging. The few studies that have addressed this trade-off have dealt only with life history traits such as age and size at maturity. Physiological traits have largely been ignored in studies assessing the impact of environmental stressors, and it is largely unknown whether they respond independently of life history traits. Here, we studied the simultaneous effects of time constraints, i.e., as imposed by seasonality, and predation risk on immune defense, …

Re-Defining Superwoman: An Essay On Overcoming The "Maternal Wall" In The Legal Workplace, Nicole Buonocore Porter Apr 2006

Re-Defining Superwoman: An Essay On Overcoming The "Maternal Wall" In The Legal Workplace, Nicole Buonocore Porter

Faculty Publications

As Professor Joan Williams comments, most women never even approach the glass ceiling; they are "stopped dead, long beforehand, by the maternal wall." The maternal wall affects women with children in many aspects of their jobs, including hiring, promotions, pay, and even terminations. It is difficult for mothers to perform as ideal workers, because pregnancy, maternity leave, and the continual demands of child-rearing inevitably cause them to be absent from work. In addition, because mothers are not similarly situated to men or women without children, courts permit employers to treat them differently, which usually means they are treated more poorly. …

Lossless Compression Of Color Palette Images With One-Dimensional Techniques, Ziya Arnavut, Ferat Sahin Apr 2006

Lossless Compression Of Color Palette Images With One-Dimensional Techniques, Ziya Arnavut, Ferat Sahin

Articles

Palette images are widely used on the World Wide Web (WWW) and in game-cartridge applications. Many images used on the WWW are stored and transmitted after they are compressed losslessly with the standard graphics interchange format (GIF), or portable network graphics (PNG). Well-known 2-D compression schemes, such as JPEG-LS and JPEG-2000, fail to yield better compression than GIF or PNG due to the fact that the pixel values represent indices that point to color values in a look-up table. To improve the compression performance of JPEG-LS and JPEG-2000 techniques, several researchers have proposed various reindexing algorithms. We investigate various compression …

An Empirical Study Of The Mother-Son Dyad In Relation To The Development Of Adult Male Homosexuality, Gregory L. Dickson, A. Dean Byrd, Ryan Howes, Heidi Drake Apr 2006

An Empirical Study Of The Mother-Son Dyad In Relation To The Development Of Adult Male Homosexuality, Gregory L. Dickson, A. Dean Byrd, Ryan Howes, Heidi Drake

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Previous research suggests the need for further exploration of the parent-child relationship in the development of adult male homosexuality. Utilizing the Parent-Child Relations Questionnaire (PCR-II; Siegelman, 1979) 135 men (57 ego-syntonic homosexuals, 34 ego-dystonic homosexuals, and 44 heterosexuals) were surveyed. Results included significant group differences on the PCR-II Mother scales and on frequency of sexual abuse. Results are consistent with past studies which suggest an important role for enviromental factors in the development of homosexuality, as consistent with theoretical literature from an object relations perspective.

Factors That Impact Development: Foreign Aid And The Millennium Development Goals, Jill Irwin Apr 2006

Factors That Impact Development: Foreign Aid And The Millennium Development Goals, Jill Irwin

Student Work

The topic of development in poor countries has recently gained attention and support in part due to the 2000 Millennium Declaration adopted by all United Nations members. Included in the declaration are eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) which aim at improving global development and are to be achieved by 2015. Due to time restrictions it is important to find effective and efficient ways to improve the issues addressed by the goals. This paper studies foreign aid’s effect on the Millennium Development Goals by using ordinary least squares regression over a time period from 1980 to 2001. This study also investigates …

The Turn In Economics: Neoclassical Dominance To Mainstream Pluralism?, John B. Davis Apr 2006

The Turn In Economics: Neoclassical Dominance To Mainstream Pluralism?, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper investigates whether since the 1980s neoclassical economics has been in the process of being supplanted as the dominant research programme in economics by a collection of competing research approaches which share relatively little in common with each other or with neoclassical economics. A shortlist of the new approaches in recent economics includes game theory, experimental economics, behavioral economics, evolutionary economics, neuroeconomics, and non-linear complexity theory. Two hypotheses are advanced – one regarding the relation between economics instruction and economics research and one regarding the nature of the economics research frontier – to describe social-institutional practices that contribute to …
