Mechanism Of Enhanced Activity Of Liposome-Entrapped Aminoglycosides Against Resistant Strains Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Clement Mugabe, Majed Halwani, Ali Azghani, Robert M. Lafrenie, Abdelwahab Omri Apr 2006

Mechanism Of Enhanced Activity Of Liposome-Entrapped Aminoglycosides Against Resistant Strains Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Clement Mugabe, Majed Halwani, Ali Azghani, Robert M. Lafrenie, Abdelwahab Omri

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is inherently resistant to most conventional antibiotics. The mechanism of resistance of this bacterium is mainly associated with the low permeability of its outer membrane to these agents. We sought to assess the bactericidal efficacy of liposome-entrapped aminoglycosides against resistant clinical strains of P. aeruginosa and to define the mechanism of liposome-bacterium interactions. Aminoglycosides were incorporated into liposomes, and the bactericidal efficacies of both free and liposomal drugs were evaluated. To define the mechanism of liposome-bacterium interactions, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), flow cytometry, lipid mixing assay, and immunocytochemistry were employed. Encapsulation of aminoglycosides into liposomes significantly increased their …

Pyrite-Induced Hydroxyl Radical Formation And Its Effect On Nucleic Acids, Corey A. Cohn, Steffen Mueller, Eckard Wimmer, Nicole Leifer, Steven Greenbaum, Daniel R. Strongin, Martin Aa Schoonen

Publications and Research

Background Pyrite, the most abundant metal sulphide on Earth, is known to spontaneously form hydrogen peroxide when exposed to water. In this study the hypothesis that pyrite-induced hydrogen peroxide is transformed to hydroxyl radicals is tested. Results Using a combination of electron spin resonance (ESR) spin-trapping techniques and scavenging reactions involving nucleic acids, the formation of hydroxyl radicals in pyrite/aqueous suspensions is demonstrated. The addition of EDTA to pyrite slurries inhibits the hydrogen peroxide-to-hydroxyl radical conversion, but does not inhibit the formation of hydrogen peroxide. Given the stability of EDTA chelation with both ferrous and ferric iron, this suggests that …

Rethinking The Monumental: The Museum As Feminist Space In The Sexual Politics Exhibition, 1996, Devon P. Larsen Apr 2006

Rethinking The Monumental: The Museum As Feminist Space In The Sexual Politics Exhibition, 1996, Devon P. Larsen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rethinking the monumental suggests not only a reconsideration of Judy Chicago’s controversial installation The Dinner Party (1979)--as displayed in the group feminist art exhibition, Sexual Politics: Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party in Feminist Art History--but also refers to an unfixing of the monumental position of power afforded the museum and a re-invigoration of the debate in feminist visual art regarding the use of the female body. I use the Sexual Politics exhibition, curated by Amelia Jones for the University of California at Los Angeles Armand Hammer Museum and Cultural Center (1996) as an indicator of the museum as feminist space. Sexual …

A Psychophysical Investigation Of Global Illumination Algorithms Used In Augmented Reality, Timothy Hattenberger Apr 2006

A Psychophysical Investigation Of Global Illumination Algorithms Used In Augmented Reality, Timothy Hattenberger

Theses

Global illumination rendering algorithms are capable of producing images that are visually realistic. However, this typically comes at a large computational expense. The overarching goal of this research was to compare different rendering solutions in order to understand why some yield better results when applied to rendering synthetic objects into real photographs. As rendered images are ultimately viewed by human observers, it was logical to use psychophysics to investigate these differences. A psychophysical experiment was conducted judging the composite images for accuracy to the original photograph. In addition, iCAM, an image color appearance model, was used to calculate image differences …

An Investigation On The Importance Of Material Anisotropy In Finite-Element Modeling Of The Human Femur, Ryan Krone, Peter Schuster Apr 2006

An Investigation On The Importance Of Material Anisotropy In Finite-Element Modeling Of The Human Femur, Ryan Krone, Peter Schuster

Mechanical Engineering

Detailed finite element modeling of the human body offers a potential major enhancement to the prediction of injury risk during vehicle impacts. Currently, vehicle crash safety countermeasure development is based on a combination of testing with established anthropomorphic test devices (i.e., ATD or dummy) and a mixture of multi-body (dummy) and finite element (vehicle) modeling. If a relatively simple finite element model can be developed to capture additional information beyond the capabilities of the multi-body systems, it would allow improved countermeasure development through more detailed prediction of performance.

A simpler finite element model of human bones could be developed if …

Method Of Predicting Splice Sites Based On Signal Interactions, Alexander Churbanov, Igor B. Rogozin, Jitender S. Deogun, Hesham Ali

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Background: Predicting and proper ranking of canonical splice sites (SSs) is a challenging problem in bioinformatics and machine learning communities. Any progress in SSs recognition will lead to better understanding of splicing mechanism. We introduce several new approaches of combining a priori knowledge for improved SS detection. First, we design our new Bayesian SS sensor based on oligonucleotide counting. To further enhance prediction quality, we applied our new de novo motif detection tool MHMMotif to intronic ends and exons. We combine elements found with sensor information using Naive Bayesian Network, as implemented in our new tool SpliceScan.

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

TheArabidopsis homolog of trithorax, ATX1, regulates numerous functions inArabidopsis beyond the homeotic genes. Here, we identified genome-wide targets of ATX1 and showed that ATX1 is a receptor for a lipid messenger, phosphatidylinositol 5-phosphate, PI5P. PI5P negatively affects ATX1 activity, suggesting a regulatory pathway connecting lipid-signaling with nuclear functions. We propose a model to illustrate how plants may respond to stimuli (external or internal) that elevate cellular PI5P levels by altering expression of ATX1-controlled genes.
