According to the National Audubon Society, the Great Lakes area is one of the world’s most significant ecological systems on which the region’s birds depend. Dr. John Yunger, Associate Professor of Biology at Governors State University has known that fact for years. Driven by his background as an educator and as an ecologist, Yunger and his colleagues in the university’s biology program have responded to bird watching’s increasing popularity by creating unique additions to the curriculum.

The Biology faculty at Governors State University have developed several ornithology related courses, one of which will take students to upper-Michigan to study raptors, …

Effects Of The Federal Income Tax Structure And Social Security On The Changing Us Family Composition, Adam M. Gray '06

Honors Projects

From dual-earner, married couples, to opposite and same-sex cohabitation, America's family structure, lifestyles, and attitudes have been changing in recent years. This paper provides a framework of understanding how families interact and make economic decisions. It examines whether external and internal benefits to family formation exist. The government should develop policies are both equitable and efficient depending on what benefits exist for society, if any. Currently, one of the biggest gains married partners make occurs within the Federal Income Tax and Social Security Systems. However, this structure was created at a time when families were very traditional-a working husband and …

Coupling Between Primary Terrestrial Succession And The Trophic Development Of Lakes At Glacier Bay, D. R. Engstrom, Sherilyn C. Fritz Apr 2006

Coupling Between Primary Terrestrial Succession And The Trophic Development Of Lakes At Glacier Bay, D. R. Engstrom, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

We use sediment cores from lakes in Glacier Bay National Park to examine the relationship between successional changes in catchment vegetation and trends in water-column nitrogen (a limiting nutrient) and lake primary production. Terrestrial succession at Glacier Bay follows several different pathways, with older sites in the lower bay being colonized directly by spruce (Picea) and by-passing a prolonged alder (Alnus) stage that characterizes younger upper-bay sites. Sediment cores from three sites spanning this successional gradient demonstrate that the variability in trophic development among lakes is a consequence of the establishment and duration of N-fixing alder …

Should It Be Illict To Solicit? A Legal Analysis Of Policy Options To Regulate Solicitation Of Organs For Transplant, Alexandra K. Glazier, Scott Sasjack Apr 2006

Should It Be Illict To Solicit? A Legal Analysis Of Policy Options To Regulate Solicitation Of Organs For Transplant, Alexandra K. Glazier, Scott Sasjack

ExpressO

Recently, there have been several well-publicized cases in which a patient in need of a transplant has solicited an organ through the use of commercial advertising and organized media campaigns. When deceased organs are directed to an individual as a result of solicitation rather than allocated through the national system, equity and medical utility are sacrificed. For this reason, regulation of deceased organ solicitation may be desirable. However, because solicitation of organs is likely to be considered constitutionally protected charitable speech, there are significant legal issues to consider. This article analyzes the legality of four possible policy options to resolve …

Housing Price Determinants In The Lynchburg, Virginia Area, Benjamin L. Ferguson Apr 2006

Housing Price Determinants In The Lynchburg, Virginia Area, Benjamin L. Ferguson

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The effect of certain variables on the price of a house is a subject that has been very widely studied. This paper attempts to generate a pricing model for houses in the Lynchburg VA, area using the physical characteristics of a home and other locational variables. The model will attempt to create a representation of the housing price equation for the market in the area. The results of the equation will allow the ability to predict future housing prices in the market, given certain physical and locational values that are similar for the area. 3

"Loss Of Estrus" And Concealed Ovulation In Human Evolution: A Reevaluation., Joshua S. Wagener '06 Apr 2006

"Loss Of Estrus" And Concealed Ovulation In Human Evolution: A Reevaluation., Joshua S. Wagener '06

Honors Projects

Accounts ofhuman evolution tend to highlight a number ofsignificant characteristics as critical in defining humanity including bipedalism (Jolly 1970, Lovejoy 1981, Wheeler 1984), enlarged brains (Falk 1990, Foley 1996), hairlessness (Morris 1963, Schwartz and Rosenblum 1980), and language (pinker and Bloom 1990, Dunbar 1996). Less frequently, scholars have focused on the unique aspects of human sexuality. In this paper, I seek to demonstrate that sexual swellings are not the norm among alloprimates and that the prevailing absence ofestrus among female humans is better viewed as a derived trait which is no more unique than that of any other primate. As …
