Reactions Of Cisplatin Hydrolytes With Thiols. 3: Reactions Of Cis-[Pt(15nh3)2(H2o)2] 2+ With Glutathione, Hadi Hadi
Makara Journal of Science
The reaction of cis-[Pt(15NH3)2(H2O)2] 2+ (3) with glutathione (GSH) was investigated in aqueous solution. In this reaction, the ammine in the platinum complex formed was liberated. Surprisingly two chelate rings were observed, six-membered-S,O-chelate ring complex cis-[Pt(15NH3 )2 (SG-S,O) (7) and five-membered-S,N-chelate ring complex cis-[Pt(15NH3 )2 (SG-S,N)] (8). The bis (thiolate) platinum(II) complex, cis-[Pt(15NH3 )2 (SG)2 ] (9) was always present in this reaction in any mole ratio used. The dinuclear sulphur-bridged complex (10), giving a broad peak in 15N NMR, was only present in very tiny amounts.

Production of beta-1,3 glucan from Agrobacterium and its wound healing activity on white rat. The objective of this study was to determine the activity of beta-1,3 glucan product extracted from local Agrobacterium sp Bro 1.2.1, both wild-type and mutant-type, on opened-wound healing process. Beta-1,3 glucan product was extracted by precipitation, and the purification was carried out by column chromatography as KCl gradient fractions. In this study, white Sprague Dawley rats were employed, and have been treated for opened-wound condition. Seven groups were performed in this experiment, i.e. the negative control, the positive control employing povidone iodine, the two groups of …

Makara Journal of Science
Echinoderm Biodiversity in the Takofi Coastal Waters, Moti Island, North Maluku. A total of 22 echinoderm species were found in Takofi waters, North Maluku. They were represented by 6 species of holothuroidea, 4 species of asteroidea, 5 species of echinoidea and 7 species of ophiuroidea. The Ophiuroidea were relatively common in seagrass area. The quantitative analysis on the abundance data revealed the highest diversity index of faunal assemblage at station II (H’=1.19). The highest evenness index was exhibited by the echinoderms from station III (J = 0.99), while the highest species richness was represented by them from station I (D …

Humidity Dependence of Optical Properties of Gelatin Films. Humidity dependence of optical properties of gelatin films prepared by casting technique has been investigated. Gelatin films was investigated its optical properties to varied humidity condition. Optical responses investigated are optical transmission and absorption at visible light spectrum measured utilizing a UV-Vis (Ultraviolet – Visible) spectrophotometer. The results of optical transmittance and absorbance obtained shows an optical response of gelatin films in widely visible light spectrum within range 530 – 680 nm, with most clearly response in a spectrum band in 580 – 650 nm. Different humidity treatment cause a significantly change …

Patents On Human Genes: An Analysis Of Scope And Claims, Lori B. Andrews, Jordan K. Paradise, Timothy R. Holbrooke
All Faculty Scholarship
There is significant domestic and international opposition to gene patents based on the fact that gene patents deter medical research and health care, as well as the policy position that genes are an inherent product of nature. Yet, equally troubling is the fact that gene patents have been issued by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office that are problematic with respect to existing federal patent law. The authors of this Policy Forum describe their study, which examined issued gene patents covering a variety of genetic diseases and described ways in which many claims fell short of USPTO patentability requirements.

Simple Methods For Estimating Outflow Salinity From Inflow And Reservoir Storage, Koji Inosako, Fasong Yuan, S. Miyamoto
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Reservoir storage reduces fluctuation in streamflow salinity, as inflow blends with stored water. This process is directly relevant to reservoir management, yet the methods for predicting outflow salinity from inflow and storage data are not adequately addressed. This study examined three simple methods for estimating outflow salinity on a monthly time step. The first method applies when inflow approximately equals outflow. The second method is applicable to changing reservoir storage. The third method utilizes a two-layer model in which evaporative concentration is assumed to occur in the top layer. The third method requires the full account of the water balance, …

Dactinomycin Impairs Cellular Respiration And Reduces Accompanying Atp Formation, Zhimin Tao, Syed S. Ahmad, Harvey S. Penefsky, Jerry Goodisman, Abdul Kader Souid
Chemistry - All Scholarship
The effect of dactinomycin on cellular respiration and accompanying ATP formation was investigated in Jurkat and HL-60 cells. Cellular mitochondrial oxygen consumption (measured by a homemade phosphorescence analyzer) and ATP content (measured by the luciferin-luciferase bioluminescence system) were determined as functions of time t during continuous exposure to the drug. The rate of respiration, k, was the negative of the slope of [O2] versus t. Oxygen consumption and ATP content were diminished by cyanide, confirming that both processes involved oxidations in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. In the presence of dactinomycin, k decreased gradually with t, the decrease being more pronounced …
