Acculturation, Locus Of Control, And Glucose Levels Among American Indians With Diabetes, Gennea A. Danks May 2006

Acculturation, Locus Of Control, And Glucose Levels Among American Indians With Diabetes, Gennea A. Danks

Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes is a critical health care issue for American Indian tribes throughout the United States. Research is increasingly considering the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of the disease, in addition to the physical attributes and consequences of diabetes. One psychological attribute that has been examined in the context of glucose control and response to diabetes treatment is locus of control, with evidence suggesting that locus of control is an important consideration in terms of physical health and compliance among people diagnosed with diabetes (Konen, 1993). The current study attempted to further this line ofresearch by examining the relationship between locus …

Educational Presentations On Diagnosis And Treatment Of Primary Immune Deficiency Disorders, Joann Almen May 2006

Educational Presentations On Diagnosis And Treatment Of Primary Immune Deficiency Disorders, Joann Almen

Theses and Dissertations

P1imary Immune Deficiency Disorders (PIDD) are rare disorders not commonly encountered in primary care. Therefore healthcare providers have limited knowledge of diagnosis, treatment, and optimal care for individuals with a PIDD. Current research indicates there is a greater prevalence then initially thought and that if the diagnosis is not made promptly detiimental outcomes can occur. Many of the disorders are treated with infusions of immune globulins. This project included preparing a Nurses Self-Study Packet on infusing Intravenous Immunoglobulin and a didactic educational power point presentation on Diagnosis and Treatment of PIDDs in primary care. These presentations offer a low cost, …

Pantagruel's Seventh Chapter: The Title As Suspect Codpiece, Brett B. Bodemer May 2006

Pantagruel's Seventh Chapter: The Title As Suspect Codpiece, Brett B. Bodemer

Library Scholarship

This study explores historical and linguistic aspects of Rabelais’ invented catalog for the Library of the Abbey of St. Victor. Contrasting the fictional catalog with an actual catalog of St. Victor’s, it examines why this Abbey was such an apt target, and shows ways in which Rabelais’ catalog explodes concerted efforts by influential scholastics associated with St. Victor’s to corral knowledge into classified schemes. It further offers a linguistic analysis of Rabelais’ mocking of the convention of titling, whose importance had surged with the arrival of mechanized printing. All of these considerations are viewed in the light of the chapter’s …

Representative Government, Representative Court? The Supreme Court As A Representative Body, Angela Onwuachi-Willig May 2006

Representative Government, Representative Court? The Supreme Court As A Representative Body, Angela Onwuachi-Willig

Faculty Scholarship

In this Symposium Essay, I propose, as a thinking matter, that we expand the number of Supreme Court justices to increase the representation of various demographic groups on the Court. In Part I, I advance the argument that the Court should be regarded as a demographically representative body of the citizens of the United States, and in Part II, I argue that the Court should be enlarged to ensure diverse representation of all voices on the most powerful judicial body of our nation.

Modulation Of Fast And Slow Inactivation In Two Cardiac Nav Channel Isoforms By Sdz 211-939, Tyce Jeffrey Kearl May 2006

Modulation Of Fast And Slow Inactivation In Two Cardiac Nav Channel Isoforms By Sdz 211-939, Tyce Jeffrey Kearl

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Here we report a hitherto unknown effect of a synthetic inactivation inhibitor on inactivation in cardiac sodium channels (Nav1.5) from two different species: human and bovine. SDZ 211-93 9 stabilized the slow inactivated-state in both channels as seen by an increased steady-state probability of slow inactivation. SDZ also destabilized the fast-inactivated state and increased the amplitude of persistent currents. SDZ modulated conductance parameters, open-state fast inactivation time constants, and activation kinetics of hNav1.5, but not bNav1.5. These findings will aid future studies designed to elucidate the binding site and molecular mechanisms of inactivation inhibitors …

Emerging Physiological Significance Of R-Type Calcium Currents, Paul Jensen May 2006

Emerging Physiological Significance Of R-Type Calcium Currents, Paul Jensen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

R-type channels are voltage dependent calcium channel subtypes. To date, the only variant of the R-type calcium channel that has been isolated and cloned is the Cav2.3 variant, encoded by the gene Cchral (Yamazaki et al., 1998). The channel was named "R-type" because it was initially characterized by its resistance to nifedipine (a blocker of L-type calcium channels), Ω-conotoxin GVIA (an N-type calcium channel blocker) and Ω -Aga IVA (a blocker of P/Q-type calcium channels) (Hille 2001). The Cav2.3 calcium channel is selectively inhibited by the peptide SNX-482, which was isolated from venom of the African …

Influence Of Soil Compaction On Nitrogen Volatilization In A Management Intensive Grazing System: Estimation Of Gaseous N Losses Using Mass Balance In Intact Soil Cores, Luke Alan Petersen May 2006

Influence Of Soil Compaction On Nitrogen Volatilization In A Management Intensive Grazing System: Estimation Of Gaseous N Losses Using Mass Balance In Intact Soil Cores, Luke Alan Petersen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Increasing concern about the environmental impacts of greenhouse gases and PM 2.5 particulates has prompted many researchers to examine the processes of gaseous loss of nitrogen (N) from agricultural land. As agricultural production becomes more competitive and producers strive to become more efficient by reducing input costs, they will increasingly employ practices such as the rotational stocking, also called Management Intensive Grazing (MIG). MIG utilizes high animal stocking rates for short periods of time to efficiently harvest pasture crops. Unfortunately, MIG also produces relatively high concentrations of livestock excreta. This has caused intensive grazing practices to become a focal point …

Southern Hills, Pocatello, Idaho: Wildlife Conservation/Development Study, Justin Kmetzsch

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The sagebrush grassland landscape has shaped aspects of southeastern Idaho culture and enhanced its rural economy. Sharptail grouse, sage grouse and mule deer hunting are deeply rooted in family traditions. Each fall thousands of residents head out into the field to hunt, camp and enjoy the autumn outdoors. Deer hunting and associated activities generate an estimated 240 million dollars annually, in the Idaho economy. More recently, watching and photographing mule deer and other sagebrush grassland species is increasing in popularity and economic significance. But, trends in land conversion and development threaten sagebrush grassland landscapes, the wildlife they sustain, and cultural …

Regulation Of Cardiac Fibroblast Metalloprotease Secretion, Glen De Guzman May 2006

Regulation Of Cardiac Fibroblast Metalloprotease Secretion, Glen De Guzman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes secreted by cardiac fibroblasts. Altered expression of MMPs plays an important role in congestive heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases1,2. Emerging evidence has led us to consider the role of phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase (PtdIns 4-kinase) in regulating MMP secretion in cardiac fibroblast cells3-7. PtdIns 4-kinase is a lipid kinase involved in various cellular processes including protein secretion. This project was designed to test the hypothesis that PtdIns 4-kinase controls MMP secretion. Techniques such as cardiac cell culture, transfection, and in-gel zymography were used for this experiment. Results demonstrated that PtdIns 4-kinase …

Science, Humanity, And Atrocity: A Lawyerly Examination, Steven D. Smith May 2006

Science, Humanity, And Atrocity: A Lawyerly Examination, Steven D. Smith

Michigan Law Review

Joseph Vining's reflection on (as the subtitle indicates) the claims of science and humanity begins with a terse but disturbing recitation of these and similar scientific experiments conducted on human beings during the twentieth century in Manchuria, Nazi Germany, and Pol Pot's Cambodia. The incidents are conveyed through quotations, sometimes of the coldly clinical prose that the researchers themselves chose as most suitable for their purposes. These quotations are juxtaposed against others from an array of distinguished scientists and philosophers explaining the naturalistic cosmology that, in the view of these thinkers, modern science has given us: it is a stark, …

Americans' Attitudes Toward Euthanasia And Physician-Assisted Suicide, 1936-2002, Jen Allen, Sonia Chavez, Sara Desimone, Debbie Howard, Keadron Johnson, Lucinda Lapierr, Darrel Montero, Jerry Sanders May 2006

Americans' Attitudes Toward Euthanasia And Physician-Assisted Suicide, 1936-2002, Jen Allen, Sonia Chavez, Sara Desimone, Debbie Howard, Keadron Johnson, Lucinda Lapierr, Darrel Montero, Jerry Sanders

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Public opinion polls conducted from 1936 to 2002 found that Americans support both euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. Although public opinion regarding end-oflife decisions appears to have been influenced by the events of the times, Americans have consistently favored the freedom to end one's life when the perceived quality of life has significantly diminished, either by one's own hand or with the assistance of a physician. This paper indicates that existing policy regarding euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide conflicts with the American public's attitudes regarding the matter, as well as examines implications for social workers who serve clients facing end-of-life decisions.

Traveling Wavetrains In The Complex Cubic-Quintic Ginzburg-Laundau Equation, S.C. Mancas, S. Roy Choudhury May 2006

Traveling Wavetrains In The Complex Cubic-Quintic Ginzburg-Laundau Equation, S.C. Mancas, S. Roy Choudhury

Publications

In this paper we use a traveling wave reduction or a so–called spatial approximation to comprehensively investigate the periodic solutions of the complex cubic–quintic Ginzburg–Landau equation. The primary tools used here are Hopf bifurcation theory and perturbation theory. Explicit results are obtained for the post–bifurcation periodic orbits and their stability. Generalized and degenerate Hopf bifurcations are also briefly considered to track the emergence of global structure such as homoclinic orbits.

Lottiamo Ancora: Reviewing One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Italian Feminism, Miguel Malagreca May 2006

Lottiamo Ancora: Reviewing One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Italian Feminism, Miguel Malagreca

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay examines the struggle of Italian feminism for transforming long rooted beliefs and gender roles in Italy since the late nineteenth century. I specifically focus on the legal, political and symbolic levels. First, I describe the historical formation of Italian feminism and its relation with literature and politics. Next, I examine the emergence of new feminist groups, and their involvement with the late 1960s protests. I then briefly explore the issues of divorce, labor and family laws during the 1970s and 1980s. Finally, I summarize the progress of the lesbian and queer movements in their struggle for recognition and …

Development Of Anchor Loci To Map A Bt Resistance Factor In The Domesticated Silkworm, Bombyx Mori, Marc Chatenay-Lapointe

Senior Honors Projects

The BT toxin is an insecticide produced by the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, and millions of acres of genetically modified crops expressing this agent have been planted. However, with such widespread use, there is a great potential for pests resistant to this toxin to develop. An understanding of how BT resistance operates and is inherited is central to ensuring continued use of the transgenic crops. Bombyx mori, the domesticated silkworm, is the model organism for the Lepidoptera, an order of insects containing many important agricultural pests. Screening shows that BT resistance is present in some silkworm strains, and linkage group 15 …

Tapirs And Rhinoceroses In Captivity: An Examination Of The North American Captive Populations And Their Husbandry, Lisa A. Nordstrom May 2006

Tapirs And Rhinoceroses In Captivity: An Examination Of The North American Captive Populations And Their Husbandry, Lisa A. Nordstrom

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

All species of Tapiridae and Rhinocerotidae are threatened or endangered in the wild. Captive populations have been established for most of these species, but successful management has proved challenging. Effective ex situ conservation strategies, however, rely on the ability of zoological institutions to maintain and breed these endangered species. In this study, I examined the captive environment to identify the factors associated with reproduction, mortality, and health of rhinos and tapirs. Zoological institutions in the North American region that currently housed rhinos and/or tapirs were surveyed in 2003. Attaining an approximately 90% response rate, I compiled information on the following …

Tumor Suppressor Activity Of Odc Antizyme In Mek-Driven Skin Tumorigenesis, David J. Feith, Sofia Origanti, Paula L. Shoop, Suzanne Sass-Kuhn, Lisa M. Shantz

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

To test the hypothesis that suppression of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity blocks the promotion of target cells in the outer root sheath of the hair follicle initiated by Raf/MEK/ERK activation, we crossed mice overexpressing an activated MEK mutant in the skin (K14-MEK mice) with two transgenic lines overexpressing antizyme (AZ), which binds to ODC and targets it for degradation. K14-MEK mice develop spontaneous skin tumors without initiation or promotion. These mice on the ICR background were crossed with K5-AZ and K6-AZ mice on both the carcinogenesis-resistant C57BL/6 background and the sensitive DBA/2 background. Expression of AZ driven by either the …
