Student Self-Assessment: A Tool For Engaging Management Students In Their Learning, Andy T. Dungan, Leigh Gronich Mundhenk May 2006

Student Self-Assessment: A Tool For Engaging Management Students In Their Learning, Andy T. Dungan, Leigh Gronich Mundhenk

Organization Management Journal

This article discusses the use of student self-assessment (SSA) for formative and summative assessment in two undergraduate programs, a management program and a leadership program, to encourage students to become more engaged in their learning. Using action research, we used an iterative process of changing or refining our methods to accommodate the differences in our teaching environments, concluding that different methods may be desirable in different environments, and that students appear to benefit from SSA regardless of the method used. Five overlapping themes emerged in the data we collected: how SSA 1) provided students with the opportunity to see the …

Penalized Splines For Longitudinal Data With An Application In Aids Studies, Hua Liang, Yuanhui Xiao May 2006

Penalized Splines For Longitudinal Data With An Application In Aids Studies, Hua Liang, Yuanhui Xiao

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A penalized spline approximation is proposed in considering nonparametric regression for longitudinal data. Standard linear mixed-effects modeling can be applied for the estimation. It is relatively simple, efficiently computed, and robust to the smooth parameters selection, which are often encountered when local polynomial and smoothing spline techniques are used to analyze longitudinal data set. The method is extended to time-varying coefficient mixed-effects models. The proposed methods are applied to data from an AIDS clinical study. Biological interpretations and clinical implications are discussed. Simulation studies are done to illustrate the proposed methods.

Afterschool Intervention Programs’ Impact Upon Select Variables Among 10th Grade Students In The Education Longitudinal Stu D Y (Els) 2002 Dataset, Diane Jackson-Chapman

Dissertations

This researcher analyzed data from the database of the National Center for Educational Statistics: Education Longitudinal Studies (ELS) 2002. The study included responses from 743 principals in 752 schools and from 15,362 10th grade students from public, Catholic, and other private schools. The dissertation investigated if the percentage of school participation in afterschool/summer outreach programs could predict students’ perceptions of teachers, drug availability on campus, student misbehaviors and punishments, and attitudes toward school and grades. The independent variable was the percentage of students in afterschool/summer outreach programs as reported by principals. The dependent variables related to students’ responses to attitudes …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

It is important to match genetic potential of cow herds with the climatic environment and feed resources available for beef production in diverse regions of the U.S. and with consumer preferences for beef products that excel in consistency, leanness, palatability and tenderness. Since 1969, the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center has been conducted to characterize breeds representing diverse biological types for a wide spectrum of biological traits of economic importance in beef production. Previous results have shown that Bos indicus X Bos taurus (e.g., Brahman and Sahiwal, sired F1 cross cows out of Hereford and …

The Unique Social Isolation Homosexual Adolescents Experience, Marisa Finnerty May 2006

The Unique Social Isolation Homosexual Adolescents Experience, Marisa Finnerty

Social Work Theses

A pioneering group of teenagers are identifying themselves as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender or Questioning (GLBTQ). GLBTQ adolescents experience a unique social isolation as compared with other minority and oppressed groups. However, current research and interventions is aimed at addressing their social isolation only once these adolescents have "come out". It was hypothesized that before "coming out" the social isolation that GLBTQ feel may be lessoned by educating all children before they begin to explore their sexual identity. A booklet was developed using feelings, experiences and supports before and after the "coming out" process, as identified by GLBTQ adolescents. With …

Growth Rates Under Interval Uncertainty, Janos Hajagos, Vladik Kreinovich May 2006

Growth Rates Under Interval Uncertainty, Janos Hajagos, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For many real-life systems ranging from financial to population-related to medical, dynamics is described by a system of linear equations. For such systems, the growth rate lambda can be determined as the largest eigenvalue of the corresponding matrix A. In many practical situations, we only know the components of the matrix A with interval (or fuzzy) uncertainty. In such situations, it is desirable to find the range of possible values of lambda. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for computing lambda for a practically important case when all the components of the matrix A are non-negative.

Selective Male Mortality In The Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis Invicta, Gary Fritz, Robert Vander Meer, Catherine Preston May 2006

Selective Male Mortality In The Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis Invicta, Gary Fritz, Robert Vander Meer, Catherine Preston

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Males in polygyne populations of Solenopsis invicta are primarily sterile diploids and thought to not express the Gp-9 gene coding for a pheromone-binding protein affecting complex social behavior. We examined an aspect of the breeding system hitherto not considered—male Gp-9 genotypes in relation to sperm stored in queens. Four sites with varying frequencies of sympatric monogyne and polygyne colonies were sampled, including sexuals, workers, and broods from four colonies. Most queens were heterozygotes storing B sperm. Although predicted to be common, only 14 of 504 males were B or BB genotypes, suggesting strong selection. Increased frequency of polygyne colonies at each …

What You Need To Know Before Vaccinating Your Horses For West Nile Virus, Russ Daly May 2006

What You Need To Know Before Vaccinating Your Horses For West Nile Virus, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Because West Nile Virus (WNV) has appeared statewide in South Dakota, horses in all counties are at risk of exposure. History indicates that WNV will continue to be present for years to come. Several commercial WNV vaccines are available for horses. Field observation suggests the vaccines are effective, and experiments indicate proper vaccination may prevent 94% or more of WNV cases. Few adverse reactions have been reported. Epidemiologic data suggests that vaccinated horses are 3 to 16 times less likely to die from WNV infections than are non-vaccinated horses.

Biotreatment Of Synthetic Drill-Cutting Waste In Soil, Laleh Rastegarzadeh, Yarrow Nelson, Todd G. Ririe May 2006

Biotreatment Of Synthetic Drill-Cutting Waste In Soil, Laleh Rastegarzadeh, Yarrow Nelson, Todd G. Ririe

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Oil and gas drilling operations create drill cutting wastes around the world. Drill cutting waste includes synthetic drilling fluids typically consisting of petroleum-based compounds mixed with clay-type materials and water. Biological treatment is an effective means of disposing of drill cutting wastes, but proper biodegradation conditions are critical. In this study biological treatment of drill cutting wastes containing Saraline® (synthetic paraffin mineral oil) was examined using a variety of amendments to study the effect of different conditions on the biodegradability of synthetic drill cutting wastes. Soil was collected from a drilling site in Southeast Asia and soil microcosms were incubated …

From Ancestral Knowledge To Clinical Practice: The Case Of Agonias And Portuguese Clinicians In America, Susan James, Geoffrey S. Navara, Jonathon Lomotey, Juanne Nancarrow Clarke

Sociology Faculty Publications

Cultures have varying notions about symptom expression and the treatment of mental health issues. Consequently, clients and psychotherapists may or may not share a similar worldview. In the psychotherapy literature there has been increased attention to these complex processes. This survey descriptive study aims to understand how therapists working with culturally diverse clients incorporate sensitivity to cultural differences. Fifteen culturally sensitive mental health care providers working with the Portuguese immigrant community were interviewed about their practices. Specifically, we investigated their understanding of the symptoms, causes and cures for agonias, a culture specific phenomenon. It was found that even though …

An Examination Of The General Mobility Of Older Adults Based On Late-Life Depression And Its Treatment, Heather Kossick May 2006

An Examination Of The General Mobility Of Older Adults Based On Late-Life Depression And Its Treatment, Heather Kossick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Older adults experience a variety of cognitive and physical declines as they age. Consequently, these changes can impact mobility and mental health (i.e., depression). Studies have suggested a relationship between driving habits changes (in particular, driving cessation) and depression (Fonda, Wallace & Herzog, 2001; Marottoli et al., 1997). Very little research has been conducted to examine the relationship between depression and other mobility changes in treated and untreated community dwelling older adults. Older drivers who ranged in age from 65 to 91 with a mean age of 73 completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) (Radloff, 1977), Life …
