Analysis Of The Upstream Regulatory Region Of The Enhancer Of Split M7 Gene In Drosophila , Bryanne E. Robson
Analysis Of The Upstream Regulatory Region Of The Enhancer Of Split M7 Gene In Drosophila , Bryanne E. Robson
Biology Honors Papers
The Notch pathway is one of the vital signaling pathways used during Drosophila development. Present in many organisms and extensively studied in D. melanogaster, this pathway serves to transduce signals between neighboring developing cells and inhibits neuronal differentiation by lateral inhibition. The primary targets of Notch are the Enhancer of split (E(spl)) genes. Although the upstream regulatory regions of the E(spl) genes contain biding sites for Suppressor of Hairless, Proneural, and E(spl) proteins, their expression patterns are not identical. There is a hidden complexity in the regulatory regions of these genes that may help explain the conservation of the overall …

Piloting The Implementation And Assessment Of A New First Year Experience At Rowan University, Stephen A. Bonora
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of freshmen residents of Evergreen Hall at Rowan University during the 2005/2006 school year. The purpose of the FYI program in Evergreen Hall was to increase student retention. Half of the residents in Evergreen Hall were full participants (FP) in the program, meaning that they had a connected experience where their orientation leader for the summer before the freshmen year was also the RA the student had in the fall semester. The other half involved were non-full participants (NFP) the students had a different orientation leader and RA. This study …

Science education and environmental education are not meeting the needs of marginalized communities such as urban, minority, and poor communities (Seller, 2001; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], 1996). There exists an equity gap characterized by the racial and socioeconomic disparities in: levels of participation in scientific and environmental careers and environmental organizations (Lewis & James, 1995; Sheppard, 1995), access to appropriate environmental education programs (U.S. EPA, 1996), exposure to environmental toxins (Bullard, 1993), access to environmental amenities and legal protections (Bullard, 1993), and in grades and standardized test scores in K-12 science (Jencks & Phillips, 1998; Johnston & Viadero, 2000). …

Delimitating Species Boundaries Within The Liomys Pictus- Spectabilis Complex (Rodentia: Heteromyidae), Victoria L. Vance
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies based on morphological, allozymic and mitochondrial sequence data have indicated that Liomys pictus is paraplyletic relative to L. spectabilis. The purpose of this study was to determine the species boundaries that exist within this complex. I estimated phylogenetic relationships within this complex using sequence data from 1,140 bp of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene and two nuclear introns from engrailed protein (190 bp) and myosin heavy chain (254 bp) genes for approximately 712 individuals representing 82 localities across the range of L. pictus and L. spectabilis. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian analyses suggest that there are …

An Investigation Of Gender Differences In Motivation Of Senior Administrators In Virginia Community Colleges Using Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory., Jewell Bevins Worley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the gender differences regarding motivation in the individuals who serve in senior administrative positions in Virginia's community colleges. Institutional morale can be damaged by administrators who become dissatisfied with their positions. Institutions use millions of dollars yearly to conduct searches for individuals to replace senior administrators who leave their positions because of lack of job satisfaction or high job dissatisfaction. This study also addressed the possibility of differences between male senior administrators and female senior administrators regarding job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction.
Frederick Herzberg' 2-factory theory of motivation regarding job satisfaction and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rats were administered nicotine (0.3 mg/kg) for 11 consecutive days before and after an electrolytic medial frontal cortex lesion. Behavioral testing was arranged so that the rats were tested on the RAM 1 day after drug administration followed by behavioral testing on the MWT 19 days after drug treatment, or tested on the MWT 1 day after drug administration followed by testing on the RAM4 days after drug treatment. Results of MWT testing showed that regardless of the drug/behavioral testing interval, lesioned rats given nicotine demonstrated enhancement relative to saline-treated animals. Results of RAM testing showed that nicotine improved performance …
Laughing In The Shadow: The Role Of Humor In Ghost Story Telling., Melissa Ann Bentley-Edwards
Laughing In The Shadow: The Role Of Humor In Ghost Story Telling., Melissa Ann Bentley-Edwards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ghost story concert is a popular modern form of presenting ghost stories to ticket buying audiences and is one of the last stomping grounds of the oral tradition. Attendees come to be scared but not terrified. Tellers employ humor to release tension during the tale. When does humor release tension while maintaining the momentum of the story? When does the humor employed deflate it into a comical tale and diffuse suspense altogether?
In an effort to answer these questions, four variants of a single story, Tailypo, were analyzed for the presence of tension and humor inducing stimuli employing …
Conjugative Transfer Pathways Of High-Level Mupirocin Resistance And Conjugative Transfer Genes In Staphylococcus., Danielle Barnard
Conjugative Transfer Pathways Of High-Level Mupirocin Resistance And Conjugative Transfer Genes In Staphylococcus., Danielle Barnard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To combat widespread infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, mupirocin was introduced at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tennessee. Soon after introduction, high-level mupirocin-resistance emerged. The rapid emergence was hypothesized to be due to conjugative transfer of the mupA resistance gene from S. epidermidis to S. aureus. Results have shown that transfer of high-level mupirocin-resistance from S. aureus donors commonly occurs. However, transfer from naturally-occurring S. epidermidis donors was not attainable. Staphylococcus epidermidis transconjugants, however, were capable of serving as donors. Further examination of non-transmissibility included PCR analysis of conjugative transfer genes (tra genes) in capable …
The Cost Of Mupirocin Resistance In Staphylococcus., Susan D. Reynolds
The Cost Of Mupirocin Resistance In Staphylococcus., Susan D. Reynolds
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Control of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is based on the concept that resistance incurs a fitness cost in non-selective conditions. Fitness costs were assessed for low- and high-level mupirocin resistance in locally-derived Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis. Costs of resistance were assessed in pure cultures by comparing growth curve characteristics and in mixed culture as the proportion of resistant cells surviving. Costs were not present in comparisons of growth rates among groups of naturally-occurring isolates from the different resistance categories. However, in S. aureus, growth rates within resistance categories differed by approximately 30 – 90%. Among near-isogenic pairs …

Father Absence And Early Family Composition As A Predictor Of Menarcheal Onset: Psychosocial And Familial Factors That Are Associated With Pubertal Timing., Amanda Christel Healey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Father absence and the introduction of a stepfather before menarche have been shown to contribute to the early onset of menarche. The present study analyzes the effects of father absence situations that tend to result on the onset of menarche. Presence of a related male in a father-absent homes is also considered as a protective factor for menarcheal onset. Participants consisted of 342 female students enrolled in undergraduate work at a southeastern university. The mean age of participants was 20.7 years. Participants completed a survey consisting of 12 questions pertaining to their family environment before menarche. Participants were asked to …
