An Empirical Investigation Of The Influence Of Fear Appeals On Attitudes And Behavioral Intentions Associated With Recommended Individual Computer Security Actions, Allen C. Johnston May 2006

An Empirical Investigation Of The Influence Of Fear Appeals On Attitudes And Behavioral Intentions Associated With Recommended Individual Computer Security Actions, Allen C. Johnston

Theses and Dissertations

Through persuasive communication, IT executives strive to align the actions of end users with the desired security posture of management and of the firm. In many cases, the element of fear is incorporated within these communications. However, within the context of computer security and information assurance, it is not yet clear how these fear-inducing arguments, known as fear appeals, will ultimately impact the actions of end users. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of fear appeals on the compliance of end users with recommendations to enact specific individual computer security actions toward the amelioration of threats. …

The Caves, Karst, And Geology Of Abaco Island, Bahamas, Lindsay N. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Abaco Island is located on Little Bahama Bank at the northwestern extent of the Bahamian Archipelago. Karst features on Abaco include: flank margin caves, karren, blue holes, pit caves, banana holes, and cone karst. As part of this study all known flank margin caves on Abaco were GPS located and surveyed. The presence and locations of the other karst features were recorded as part of the karst inventory of Abaco. The cone karst is of particular interest because cone karst has not been documented on other Bahamian islands. These cones form from the dissection of an eolianite ridge due to …

The Experiences Of A Rural Mississippi Mathematics Teacher: A Case Study, John Hamilton Lamb May 2006

The Experiences Of A Rural Mississippi Mathematics Teacher: A Case Study, John Hamilton Lamb

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates my experiences as a rural Mississippi secondary mathematics teacher. The culture surrounding accountability testing and rural education as well as student perceptions of my mathematics instruction and classroom management were investigated. With recent educational legislation such as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, teachers and students are experiencing education differently than teachers and students of the past. Through this basic interpretive case study, I sought to increase the limited research surrounding student perceptions of rural mathematics instruction and accountability testing and to provide a descriptive image of teaching in this rural school. The students, administrators, …

Water Quality, Modeling, And Land Use Investigations In The Upper Pearl River Basin Of East-Central Mississippi, Mary Love Mortimer Tagert

Theses and Dissertations

Little historical water quality data is available for the Upper Pearl River Basin (UPRB), yet there are UPRB waters listed as impaired. Objectives of this research were to measure pesticide and sediment concentrations in UPRB surface waters and validate the Annualized Agricultural Nonpoint-Source (AnnAGNPS) runoff model with the measured data for a portion of the UPRB. An additional objective was to quantify effects of land use changes on UPRB surface waters from 1987 to 2002 using AnnAGNPS. Of the fifteen compounds analyzed, hexazinone was most frequently detected, in 94% of samples, followed by metolachlor, tebuthiuron, and atrazine. Metribuzin was detected …

On The Origin And Functions Of Rna-Mediated Silencing: From Protists To Man, Heriberto D. Cerutti, Juan Casas-Mollano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Double-stranded RNA has been shown to induce gene silencing in diverse eukaryotes and by a variety of pathways. We have examined the taxonomic distribution and the phylogenetic relationship of key components of the RNA interference (RNAi) machinery in members of five eukaryotic supergroups. On the basis of the parsimony principle, our analyses suggest that a relatively complex RNAi machinery was already present in the last common ancestor of eukaryotes and consisted, at a minimum, of one Argonaute-like polypeptide, one Piwi-like protein, one Dicer, and one RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. As proposed before, the ancestral (but non-essential) role of these components may …

Gender Differentials In The Evolution Of Cigarette Smoking Habits In A General European Adult Population From 1993–2003, Michael C. Costanza, Julien Salamun, Alan D. Lopez, Alfredo Morabia

Publications and Research

Background Describe the recent evolution of cigarette smoking habits by gender in Geneva, where incidence rates of lung cancer have been declining in men but increasing in women. Methods Continuous cross-sectional surveillance of the general adult (35–74 yrs) population of Geneva, Switzerland for 11 years (1993–2003) using a locally-validated smoking questionnaire, yielding a representative random sample of 12,271 individuals (6,164 men, 6,107 women). Results In both genders, prevalence of current cigarette smoking was stable over the 11-year period, at about one third of men and one quarter of women, even though smoking began at an earlier age in more recent …

Summer Transport Estimates Of The Kamchatka Current Derived As A Variational Inverse Of Hydrophysical And Surface Drifter Data, G.G. Panteleev, P. Stabeno, V.A. Luchin, Dmitri A. Nechaev, M. Ikeda May 2006

Summer Transport Estimates Of The Kamchatka Current Derived As A Variational Inverse Of Hydrophysical And Surface Drifter Data, G.G. Panteleev, P. Stabeno, V.A. Luchin, Dmitri A. Nechaev, M. Ikeda

Faculty Publications

The quasistationary summer Bering Sea circulation is reconstructed as a variational inverse of the hydrographic and atmospheric climatologies, transport estimates through the Bering Strait, and surface drifter data. Our results indicate the splitting of the Kamchatka Current in the vicinity of the Shirshov Ridge. This branching is in agreement with independent ARGO drifter observations. It was also found, that transport of the Kamchatka Current gradually increases downstream from 14 Sv in the Olyutorsky Gulf to 24 Sv in the Kamchatka Strait, which is twice higher than previous estimates.

Dietary selenium has potent cancer prevention activity. Both low molecular weight selenocompounds and selenoproteins are implicated in this effect. Thioredoxin reductase 1 (TR1) is one of the major antioxidant and redox regulators in mammals that supports p53 function and other tumor suppressor activities. However, this selenium-containing oxidoreductase is also overexpressed in many malignant cells and has been proposed as a target for cancer therapy. To further assess the role of TR1 in the malignancy process, we used RNA interference technology to decrease its expression in mouse lung carcinoma (LLC1) cells. Stable transfection of LLC1 cells with a small interfering RNA …

Mutations Affecting Beta-Tubulin Folding And Degradation, Yaqing Wang, Guoling Tian, Nicholas J Cowan, Fernando Cabral May 2006

Mutations Affecting Beta-Tubulin Folding And Degradation, Yaqing Wang, Guoling Tian, Nicholas J Cowan, Fernando Cabral

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Revertants of a colcemid-resistant Chinese hamster ovary cell line with an altered (D45Y) beta-tubulin have allowed the identification of four cis-acting mutations (L187R, Y398C, a 12-amino acid in-frame deletion, and a C-terminal truncation) that act by destabilizing the mutant tubulin and preventing it from incorporating into microtubules. These unstable beta-tubulins fail to form heterodimers and are predominantly found in association with the chaperonin CCT, suggesting that they cannot undergo productive folding. In agreement with these in vivo observations, we show that the defective beta-tubulins do not stably interact with cofactors involved in the tubulin folding pathway and, hence, fail to …

An Investigation Into The Antifungal Activities Of N-Thiolated Beta- Lactams Against Selected Candida Species, Marci Culbreath May 2006

An Investigation Into The Antifungal Activities Of N-Thiolated Beta- Lactams Against Selected Candida Species, Marci Culbreath

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

β-lactam antibiotics have long been a reliable course of treatment for bacterial infections. However, with recent increases in resistance and rising populations of immunocompromised patients new β-lactams have been synthesized and tested. The Turos laboratory has recently discovered novel β-lactams that have a mode of action distinct from penicillin and other β-lactam antibiotics as cell lysis is not observed. In the current investigations, these compounds are shown to also have antifungal properties. The rising incidence and prevalence of invasive fungal infections has become an increasing concern. The most common fungal pathogens involved in these infections are species in the genus …

Regulation Of E(Spl) Gene Expression During Development, Morgan L. Maeder May 2006

Regulation Of E(Spl) Gene Expression During Development, Morgan L. Maeder

Biology Honors Papers

The Notch pathway, a crucial developmental signaling system, acts to direct the fates of individual cells in many organisms and has also been implicated in a wide range of human diseases. Notch signaling plays a vital role in cell fate decisions in almost every tissue type ranging from the skin to the nervous and vascular systems. Aberrant Notch signaling has been implicated as a cause of many diseases, including a variety of cancers. Activation of the Notch receptor releases a Notch intracellular domain into the nucleus, where it binds with a transcription factor, Suppressor of Hairless (Su(H))to create an active …
