Some Preservation Techniques For (Deep Water) Coral Samples For Subsequent Molecular Studies: A Special Supplement From Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Jose V. Lopez

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

Around the time that the thirteen original Atlantic colonies were fighting for independence from Britain, there existed little agreement among naturalists as to the nature of corals. Were they inanimate (stones), plants, animals, or intermediate between the latter two (zoophytes)? This diversity of definition and opinions undoubtedly produced considerable confusion and disagreement among naturalists interested in such things. The symbiotic nature of algal cells in the tissues of some corals was also not well understood. It was not until the Darwinian period in the nineteenth century that little doubt remained, and therefore it was generally agreed, that corals were actually …

Anti-Viral Activity Of Quillaja Saponaria Molina Extracts Against Hiv-1 And Hiv-2, Jennifer Lee Sprayberry Aug 2006

Anti-Viral Activity Of Quillaja Saponaria Molina Extracts Against Hiv-1 And Hiv-2, Jennifer Lee Sprayberry

Biology Theses - Archive

It has been well established that extracts from the bark of the South American tree Quillaja saponaria Molina have the capacity to stimulate strong immune responses against exogenous antigen when used as an adjuvant. However, the anti-viral capacity of Q. saponins has not been well established. We document the anti-viral capacity of Quillaja saponaria extracts against HIV-1 and HIV-2. The extract appeared to interact with the gp120 subunit of HIV-1 and HIV-2 to produce a low anti-viral effect by blocking viral attachment. The extract was also observed to coat cells in a time dependent manner and block attachment to CD4 …

Regulation Of Angiogenic Factors By Pituitary Tumor Transforming Gene (Pttg) In Tumorigenesis., Mohammad Tariq Malik Aug 2006

Regulation Of Angiogenic Factors By Pituitary Tumor Transforming Gene (Pttg) In Tumorigenesis., Mohammad Tariq Malik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pituitary tumor transforming gene ( PTTG ), also known as securing, is a novel oncogene that is expressed at high levels in most of the tumors analyzed to date. Overexpression of PTTG in mouse fibroblast(NIH 3T3) cells increases cell proliferation, induces cellular transformation and promotes tumor formation in nude mice. PTTG is a multi-domain and multifunction protein. Some functions of PTTG include inhibition of pre-mature sister chromatid separation, activation of transcription of c-myc oncogene, cell cycle regulation, and DNA repair. In some cancers such as thyroid, pituitary, esophageal, and colorectal tumors, high PTTG expression correlates with metastasis and poor prognosis. …

Connecting Health Concepts And Health Behavior : The Construction Of Health Identity., Valerie French Aug 2006

Connecting Health Concepts And Health Behavior : The Construction Of Health Identity., Valerie French

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an historical, theoretical and empirical examination of women's health concepts and health behavior in contemporary consumer-oriented American society. It begins with an historical overview of social health movements to illustrate how health concepts are shaped by cultural, social, political, and moral beliefs and practices. It then traces the socio-cultural construction of "health" to understand how this concept is shaped by various social and individual factors. The qualitative methodology of grounded theory was used to examine empirically how a sample of women defines "health" and what behaviors they engage in related to "health." Non-random convenience sampling was employed …

Changes In Microbial Community Structure Of Petroleum Contaminated Sediments Are Reflected In Subsurface Geophysical Signatures, Jonathan P. Allen Aug 2006

Changes In Microbial Community Structure Of Petroleum Contaminated Sediments Are Reflected In Subsurface Geophysical Signatures, Jonathan P. Allen

Masters Theses

Petroleum contamination of sediments leads to dynamic changes in the subsurface. These include changes in the microbiota as well as in the subsurface geophysical and geochemical properties. Anomalously high conductivity values observed in subsurface zones contaminated with light non aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) have been suggested to be the result of microbial activity. Therefore, we investigated the interdependence between geoelectrical signatures and microbial community structure in petroleum contaminated field sediments and laboratory column experiments. Spatial and temporal changes in electrical conductivity of the subsurface paralleled changes in microbial community composition, with the highest conductivity values concomitant with specific anaerobic hydrocarbon-degrading …

Cyclin D1 Repression Of Nuclear Respiratory Factor 1 Integrates Nuclear Dna Synthesis And Mitochondrial Function., Chenguang Wang, Zhiping Li, Yinan Lu, Runlei Du, Sanjay Katiyar, Jianguo Yang, Maofu Fu, Jennifer E Leader, Andrew Quong, Phyllis M Novikoff, Richard Pestell

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Cyclin D1 promotes nuclear DNA synthesis through phosphorylation and inactivation of the pRb tumor suppressor. Herein, cyclin D1 deficiency increased mitochondrial size and activity that was rescued by cyclin D1 in a Cdk-dependent manner. Nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF-1), which induces nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes, was repressed in expression and activity by cyclin D1. Cyclin D1-dependent kinase phosphorylates NRF-1 at S47. Cyclin D1 abundance thus coordinates nuclear DNA synthesis and mitochondrial function.

Social Familiarity As A Predictor Of Observational Learning In The Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris), Lana Gent Aug 2006

Social Familiarity As A Predictor Of Observational Learning In The Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris), Lana Gent

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Experiments utilizing observational learning in dogs are becoming more frequent, but few investigate the familiarity relationship between model and observer. Two experiments were designed to explore the familiarity relationship between conspecifics and heterospecifics. The first experiment utilized a heterospecific-conspecific training dynamic and the conditions of the experiment varied how familiar (familiar or unfamiliar) observing dogs were to the heterospecific and conspecific models. Forty-eight dogs were assigned to four conditions varying in familiarity of the human demonstrator and model dog. A separate control condition (n=12) were trained with operant techniques and did not receive demonstration or familiarity variables. Analysis of data …

An Application Of Parallel And Distributed Computing Methods To Approximate Pattern Matching Of Genetic Regulatory Motifs, Tushar Kumar Jayantilal Aug 2006

An Application Of Parallel And Distributed Computing Methods To Approximate Pattern Matching Of Genetic Regulatory Motifs, Tushar Kumar Jayantilal

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Bioinformatics is a relatively new scientific field concerned with providing computational means and support to research in molecular biology and genetics. It draws from many different areas of computer science, including database theory, algorithm design and analysis, and artificial intelligence, to name just a few. In many applications, such as one described in this thesis, a biologist is interested in locating a particular pattern, or sequence motif, in a given string or set of strings over the four-letter DNA alphabet. In this thesis we present an efficient approach to locating promoter and other regulatory sequences in entire genomes or in …

Population Genetics Of Phanaeus Vindex And P. Difformis And Congruence With Morphology Across A Geographic Zone Of Species Overlap, Aaron Michael Dickey Aug 2006

Population Genetics Of Phanaeus Vindex And P. Difformis And Congruence With Morphology Across A Geographic Zone Of Species Overlap, Aaron Michael Dickey

Biology Theses - Archive

Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs) reveal that the rainbow scarabs Phanaeus vindex (MacLeay) and Phanaeus difformis (LeConte) are distinct evolutionary units which occur in sympatry at the Fort Worth Nature Center. The genetic structure at this location is distinctly bimodal with strong segregation of taxa based on soil type. In addition, certain allele frequencies within P. vindex locations exhibited a significant correlation with a precipitation gradient and other allele frequencies within P. vindex locations were significantly different on loam soil than on both sand and clay soils. Phanaeus vindex and P. difformis exhibit continuous morphological character states between two extremes, …

Sugar Concentrations, Hummingbird Aggressiveness, And Community Composition In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2006, Paul Brooks, Jennifer M. Gillen

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

We studied hummingbird communities in Cañitas, Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica to observe territorial tendencies when given high and low percentage sugar concentration of food resources at artificial feeders along the edge of a forest patch. We wanted to determine if community composition was disproportionately affected by more aggressive, and therefore territorial species. We observed interactions of hummingbirds at artificial feeders of 20 and 33% sugar concentration. We found a disproportionately high number of visits by Rufous-tailed Hummingbirds (Amazilia tzacatl) at both sets of feeders (52.5% at 20% feeders and 89.4% at 33% feeders). We found a higher frequency of visits …

The Land Conservation Plan For New Hampshire's Coastal Watershed, M. Zankel, C. Copeland, P. Ingraham, J. Robinson, C. Sinnott, D. Sundquist, T. Walker, J. Alford

PREP Reports & Publications

Spanning 990 square miles and 46 towns, New Hampshire’s coastal watersheds harbor exceptional and irreplaceable natural, cultural, recreational and scenic resources (Figure 1). To advance the long-term protection of these resources, the State of New Hampshire, acting through the NH Coastal Program and the NH Estuaries Project, sought to develop a comprehensive, science-based land conservation plan for our coastal watersheds. The State engaged a partnership of The Nature Conservancy, Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, Rockingham Planning Commission, and Strafford Regional Planning Commission to develop the plan. The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s Piscataqua Region supported this effort as …
