The oxidative burst is an early response to pathogen attack leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) including hydrogen peroxide. Two major mechanisms involving either NADPH oxidases or peroxidases that may exist singly or in combination in different plant species have been proposed for the generation of ROS. We identified an Arabidopsis thaliana azide-sensitive but diphenylene iodonium-insensitive apoplastic oxidative burst that generates H₂O₂ in response to a Fusarium oxysporum cell-wall preparation. Sheath blight, caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani, is a major disease of rice world-wide, but little is known about the host response to infection. The objective of this study was to identify proteins and DNA markers in resistant and susceptible rice associated with response to infection by R. solani. Replicated two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis experiments were conducted to detect proteins differentially expressed under inoculated and non-inoculated conditions. Tandem mass spectra analysis using electrospray ionization quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (ESI Q-TOF MS) was carried out for protein identification with the NCBI non-redundant protein database. Economic Development As Opportunity Equalization, John E. Roemer

The justification of using GNP per capita as a measure of economic development is utilitarian ethics plus an assumption that no needs are more urgent than others. Here, we advocate a measure of economic development based on the degree to which the society in question has equalized opportunities for the acquisition of income. In highly developed economies, inequality of opportunity accounts for less than 10% of total inequality, while in developing economies, it accounts for over 30%.

Objective: This study investigates whether 99mTc pyrophosphate (PYP) imaging provides a quantitative non-invasive assessment of the extent of electroporation injury, and of the effect of poloxamer in vivo on electroporated skeletal muscle. Methods: High-voltage electrical shock was used to produce electroporation injury in an anesthetized rat's hind limb. In each experiment, the injured limb was treated intravenously by either poloxamer-188, dextran, or saline, and subsequently imaged with 99mTc PYP. The radiotracer's temporal behavior among the experimental groups was compared using curve fitting of time-activity curves from the dynamic image data. Results: The washout kinetics of 99mTc PYP changed in proportion …

OBJECTIVE: To report the pattern, subsite distribution and histological features of colorectal cancer in a University Hospital in Riyadh. METHODS: The study was carried out in King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the medical records of patients diagnosed to have colorectal carcinoma were retrieved spanning a 5-year period from 1999 through 2004. The demographic data, primary location and extent of the lesion, and various pathologic characteristics were analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-seven patients with colorectal carcinoma were included; 45 men and 12 women, age range 21-76 years (mean 44 years). Thirty-six (63%) subjects were found to be younger …

The present research work was designed to gather indigenous knowledge of local women about herbal medicines. Present study was confined to interview women of remote villages of district Chakwal. The study was conducted from October 2004-February 2005. Indigenous knowledge was collected by interviewing about 50 women of different age groups between 20 and 80 years. Frequent field trips were arranged to collect plant specimens. Information about the local names, parts used and medicinal uses of plants was collected from native women. In herpesvirus infections, the virus persists for life but is contained through T-cell-mediated immune surveillance. How this immune surveillance operates is poorly understood. Recent studies of other persistent infections have indicated that virus persistence is associated with functional deficits in the CD8(+) T-cell response. To test whether this is the case in a herpesvirus infection, we used a mutant murine gammaherpesvirus that is defective in its ability to persist in the host. By comparing the immune response to this virus with a revertant virus that can persist, we were able to dissect the changes in the antiviral CD8(+) T-cell response …

In previous research, microsatellite markers have been used to geographically and phylogenetically characterize and identify populations of sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus Gmelin). Given that sea scallops are a closely related species to bay scallops (Argopecten irradians Lamarck), we have investigated whether the flanking DNA sequences of sea scallop microsatellite loci have been conserved in the bay scallop. We found that in all seven sets of published sea scallop PCR primers (Pma130, -132, -135, -180, -200, -212, and -275) that were tested with bay scallop DNA, there was sequence conservation and amplification of microsatellite regions.
