A Theoretical Eye Model For Uncalibrated Real-Time Eye Gaze Estimation, Justin Hnatow

Theses

Computer vision systems that monitor human activity can be utilized for many diverse applications. Some general applications stemming from such activity monitoring are surveillance, human-computer interfaces, aids for the handicapped, and virtual reality environments. For most of these applications, a non-intrusive system is desirable, either for reasons of covertness or comfort. Also desirable is generality across users, especially for humancomputer interfaces and surveillance. This thesis presents a method of gaze estimation that, without calibration, determines a relatively unconstrained user’s overall horizontal eye gaze. Utilizing anthropometric data and physiological models, a simple, yet general eye model is presented. The equations that …

Efforts to explain when and why the state can legitimately impose retributive punishment on an actor who inadvertently creates an unjustified risk of causing death (and death results) typically rely on one of two theories. The prior-choice theory claims that retributive punishment for inadvertent lethal risk-creation is justified if and only if the actor's inadvertence or ignorance was a but-for and proximate result of a prior culpable choice. We show that the distinction between Self and Other, ‘us’ and ‘them,’ or in-group and out-group, affects significantly economic and social behavior. In a series of experiments with approximately 200 Midwestern students as our subjects, we found that they favor those who are similar to them on any of a wide range of categories of identity over those who are not like them. Whereas family and kinship are the most powerful source of identity in our sample, all 13 potential sources of identity in our experiments affect behavior. Before Katrina, before 9/11, there was a growing awareness of the need for a special medical response team in Illinois. This team of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians would be trained and ready to assist local emergency responders in cases of extreme and catastrophic man-made or natural disasters.

While such a disaster has not befallen people in Illinois, IMERT, the Illinois Medical Emergency Response Team, which boasts 1200 volunteers from across the state, was established to assist local emergency responders deal with catastrophic emergencies.

The extensive training IMERT members receive has expanded and become more effective since IMERT …

Microarray Profiling Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Proteins, Jospeh S. Schulz, Nathan Palmer, Jon Steckelberg, Steven J. Jones, Michael G. Zeece

Microarrays were developed to profile the level of proteins associated with calcium regulation in sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) isolated from porcine Longissimus muscle. The microarrays consisted of SR preparations printed onto to glass slides and probed with monoclonal antibodies to 7 target proteins. Proteins investigated included: ryanodine receptor, (RyR), dihydropyridine receptor, (DHPR), triadin (TRI), calsequestrin (CSQ), 90 kDa junctional protein (JSR90), and fast-twitch and slow-twitch SR calcium ATPases (SERCA1 and SERCA2). Signal from a fluorescentlylabeled detection antibody was measured and quantitated using a slide reader. The microarray developed was also employed to profile Longissimus muscle SR proteins from halothane genotyped animals. …

Noncatalyzed and catalyzed electrochemical oxidations of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were studied with the aim to understand their durability as catalyst support in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Bare and Pt-deposited CNTs were investigated in 1.0 M sulfuric acid at a constant potential of 1.2 V. Carbon black (CB, Vulcan XC-72R) was also studied under the same experimental conditions. the carbons were oxidized at room temperature in the form of thin-film electrodes with time durations up to 48 h.
