Liana Habitat Associations And Community Structure In A Bornean Lowland Tropical Forest, Saara J. Dewalt, Kalan Ickes, Reuben Nilus, Kyle E. Harms, David F.R.P. Burslem

Faculty Publications

Lianas (woody vines) contribute substantially to the diversity and structure of most tropical forests, yet little is known about the importance of habitat specialization in maintaining tropical liana diversity and the causes of variation among forests in liana abundance and species composition. We examined habitat associations, species diversity, species composition, and community structure of lianas at Sepilok Forest Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia in northeastern Borneo among three soil types that give rise to three distinct forest types of lowland tropical rain forest: alluvial, sandstone hill, and kerangas (heath) forest. Alluvial soils are more nutrient rich and have higher soil moisture than …

Transcutaneous Immunization With Toxin-Coregulated Pilin A Induces Protective Immunity Against Vibrio Cholerae O1 El Tor Challenge In Mice, Julianne E. Rollenhagen, Anuj Kalsy, Francisca Cerda, Manohar John

Dartmouth Scholarship

Toxin-coregulated pilin A (TcpA) is the main structural subunit of a type IV bundle-forming pilus of Vibrio cholerae, the cause of cholera. Toxin-coregulated pilus is involved in formation of microcolonies of V. cholerae at the intestinal surface, and strains of V. cholerae deficient in TcpA are attenuated and unable to colonize intestinal surfaces. Anti-TcpA immunity is common in humans recovering from cholera in Bangladesh, and immunization against TcpA is protective in murine V. cholerae models. To evaluate whether transcutaneously applied TcpA is immunogenic, we transcutaneously immunized mice with 100 mug of TcpA or TcpA with an immunoadjuvant (cholera toxin [CT], …

The Effects Of Tgf-Beta1 And Igf-I On The Biomechanics And Cytoskeleton Of Single Chondrocytes, Nic Leipzig

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Objective Ascertaining how mechanical forces and growth factors mediate normal and pathologic processes in single chondrocytes can aid in developing strategies for the repair and replacement of articular cartilage destroyed by injury or disease. This study examined effects of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on the biomechanics and cytoskeleton of single zonal chondrocytes. Method Superficial and middle/deep bovine articular chondrocytes were seeded on tissue culture treated plastic for 3 and 18 h and treated with TGF-β1 (5 ng/mL), IGF-I (100 ng/mL), or a combination of TGF-β1 (5 ng/mL) + IGF-I (100 ng/mL). Single chondrocytes from all …

Designing A Nanotube Using Naturally Occurring Protein Building Blocks, Jie Zheng Oct 2006

Designing A Nanotube Using Naturally Occurring Protein Building Blocks, Jie Zheng

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Here our goal is to carry out nanotube design using naturally occurring protein building blocks. Inspection of the protein structural database reveals the richness of the conformations of proteins, their parts, and their chemistry. Given target functional protein nanotube geometry, our strategy involves scanning a library of candidate building blocks, combinatorially assembling them into the shape and testing its stability. Since self-assembly takes place on time scales not affordable for computations, here we propose a strategy for the very first step in protein nanotube design: we map the candidate building blocks onto a planar sheet and wrap the sheet around …

Phytochrome-Mediated Development In Land Plants: Red Light Sensing Evolves To Meet The Challenges Of Changing Light Environments, Sarah Mathews Oct 2006

Phytochrome-Mediated Development In Land Plants: Red Light Sensing Evolves To Meet The Challenges Of Changing Light Environments, Sarah Mathews

Faculty Publications

Phytochromes are photoreceptors that provide plants with circadian, seasonal, and positional information critical for the control of germination, seedling development, shade avoidance, reproduction, dormancy, and sleep movements. Phytochromes are unique among photoreceptors in their capacity to interconvert between a red-absorbing form (absorption maximum of ∼660 nm) and a far-red absorbing form (absorption maximum of ∼730 nm), which occur in a dynamic equilibrium within plant cells, corresponding to the proportions of red and far-red energy in ambient light. Because pigments in stems and leaves absorb wavelengths below about 700 nm, this provides plants with an elegant system for detecting their position …

Thermal Stability Landscape For Klenow Dna Polymerase As A Function Of Ph And Salt Concentration, Allison J. Richard, Chin Chi Liu, Alexandra L. Klinger, Matthew J. Todd, Tara M. Mezzasalma, Vince J. Licata Oct 2006

Thermal Stability Landscape For Klenow Dna Polymerase As A Function Of Ph And Salt Concentration, Allison J. Richard, Chin Chi Liu, Alexandra L. Klinger, Matthew J. Todd, Tara M. Mezzasalma, Vince J. Licata

Faculty Publications

The thermal denaturation of Klenow DNA polymerase has been characterized over a wide variety of solution conditions to obtain a relative stability landscape for the protein. Measurements were conducted utilizing a miniaturized fluorescence assay that measures Tm based on the increase in the fluorescence of 1,8-anilinonaphthalene sulfonate (ANS) when the protein denatures. The melting temperature (Tm) for Klenow increases as the salt concentration is increased and as the pH is decreased. Klenow's Tm spans a range of over 20 °C, from 40 to 62 °C, depending upon the solution conditions. The landscape reconciles and extends previously measured Tm values for …

Integrin Structures And Conformational Signaling, Bing Hao Luo, Timothy A. Springer Oct 2006

Integrin Structures And Conformational Signaling, Bing Hao Luo, Timothy A. Springer

Faculty Publications

Integrins are cell adhesion molecules that play critical roles in development, wound healing, hemostasis, immunity and cancer. Advances in the past two years have shed light on the structural basis for integrin regulation and signaling, especially on how global conformational changes between bent and extended conformations relate to the inter-domain and intra-domain shape shifting that regulates affinity for ligand. The downward movements of the C-terminal helices of the α I and β I domains and the swing-out of the hybrid domain play pivotal roles in integrin conformational signaling. Experiments have also shown that integrins transmit bidirectional signals across the plasma …

The Structure And Function Of Frataxin, Krisztina Z. Bencze, Kalyan C. Kondapalli, Jeremy D. Cook, Stephen Mcmahon, César Millán-Pacheco, Nina Pastor, Timothy L. Stemmler Oct 2006

The Structure And Function Of Frataxin, Krisztina Z. Bencze, Kalyan C. Kondapalli, Jeremy D. Cook, Stephen Mcmahon, César Millán-Pacheco, Nina Pastor, Timothy L. Stemmler

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Frataxin, a highly conserved protein found in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, is required for efficient regulation of cellular iron homeostasis. Humans with a frataxin deficiency have the cardio- and neurodegenerative disorder Friedreich’s ataxia, commonly resulting from a GAA trinucleotide repeat expansion in the frataxin gene. While frataxin’s specific function remains a point of controversy, a general consensus is the protein assists in controlling cellular iron homeostasis by directly binding iron. This review focuses on the structural and biochemical aspects of iron binding by the frataxin orthologs and outlines molecular attributes that may help explain the protein’s role in different cellular pathways.

U.S. Sentencing Guidelines And Export Control Laws: How To Equate A Credit Card Transaction With A Violation Of National Security Controls Or Selling 400 Grams Of Heroin, J. Triplett Mackintosh, Danielle R. Voorhees Oct 2006

U.S. Sentencing Guidelines And Export Control Laws: How To Equate A Credit Card Transaction With A Violation Of National Security Controls Or Selling 400 Grams Of Heroin, J. Triplett Mackintosh, Danielle R. Voorhees

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article critiques the application of section 2M5.1 of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines (USSG) to criminal violations of the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) regulations, arguing that such application is overly broad and misaligned with the severity of offenses. It contends that treating minor transactions with embargoed countries as equivalent to national security threats or terrorism support is inappropriate, as these regulations often involve malum prohibitum offenses that are not inherently malicious.

Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Kam C. Wong Oct 2006

Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Kam C. Wong

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article explores the complex ethical, legal, and societal dimensions of the right-to-die debate, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach that moves beyond simplistic moral framing. It argues that the debate is inherently exploratory and tentative, shaped by cultural and personal values, and calls for a reassessment of existing perspectives to foster creative solutions. The central thesis underscores the inevitability of euthanasia as a societal issue and advocates for balanced policies that respect individual autonomy while addressing broader societal concerns.

Antimicrobial Activities Of Some Nigerian Chewing Sticks, M. O. Ogundiya, M. B. Okunade, A. L. Kolapo

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The antimicrobial activities of the ethanolic extracts of three Nigerian chewing sticks, namely, Terminalia glaucescens, Anogeissus leiocarpus and Pseudocedrela kotschyi were investigated. Results from this study showed that the antimicrobial activities of the tested chewing sticks vary and are target-microbe specific. Of the tested chewing sticks, A. leiocarpus showed a significantly higher antibacterial activity (P<0.05) against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes; and this was closely followed by T. glaucescens, while P. kotschyi virtually had no activity against these two organisms. However, the activity of T. glaucescens against Streptococcus mutans was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that exhibited by A. leiocarpus. The extracts of …
